Assessment and Evaluation - Ms. Janice A.

Rojas, OTRP teaching&learning guide for thx teaching strat (for nurses) apprehensive for teachers PURPOSE OF ASX .well-planned asx - discover the learner's S&W .2 broad categories 1. Diagnostic - to identify what learner can do well and what needs to be improved 2. Need to judge - act as gatekeeper so standards don't fail .2 types: a. dx purpose of asx - formative asx implying further given to learner - given before - eval, dx test, entrance exam - ex. When practical skills are to be taught and clinical practice is supervised the fb thx - facilitator b. summative asx - judgment purpose of asx - used to measure what has been learned - given after - teaching is complete - ex. Teacher giving posttest, LE. thx - judge .aspect to consider - the effect on thx on being both facilitator and judge .get to know each other well to reduce the anxiety often felt when judging and being judged. - can lead to fairer asx - DIS! Biased in favor of the learner * or personality clash - biased against the learner * poor relationship - the learner will be reticent with the thx, not wanting to reveal inadequacies and this not gaining the max benefit from the learning experience What should be assessed and how should asx be conducted? . Observation of skill - refer to observation of tx to a px or client during clinical or fieldwork exp, or demo of a practical skill on a colleague while undertaking a skill course * pass or fail basis * criterion referencing - employing a # of grades w/ a written explanation of each * norm referencing - thx watch the learner perform and make a judgment by comparing them w/ the norm established by the group . asx of an oral presentation (case study!) - the thx will discover how much the learner understands each situation (skill course)

- learner may be observed carrying out a particular procedure & the thx may want an explanation of how it may be used in practice (use of open question will encourage the learner to engage in discussion) . Written work - multiple choice questions - short answer questions - essay questions - dissertations Persons involved in asx process 1. Teacher 2. Learner Involving the learners in the asx process * self-assessment L: goals and criteria, goals have been met * peer assessment - useful in assessing group of learners - + develop critical thinking + develop ability to work in grp - + learn to work more effectively as part of a team - 6-8 persons - usually combined with self-asx - thx = facilitator * collaborative assessment - intermediate stage between the unilateral asx by the thx and self-asx by learner - set criteria - resultant grade is negotiated - for Clinical and fieldwork practice Coping Process . Discuss thoroughly the reasons for failure and make explicit evidence upon w/c failure is based . Learning might be compromised - reason: confusion about the goals to be achieved or learners doubted their ability to achieve them - L: knowledge gap or emotionally upset - FX: lack of opportunity or time + nonsupportive environment Techniques of Asx 1. One minute paper a. What is the most impt thing you learned today? B. What impt pt remains unclear to you? 2. Muddiest point what is the muddiest (most unclear) point in todays lesson? 3. Directed paraphrasing students are asked to state in their own words what they just learned

4. Application cards note one possible app'n of any principle, theory or new info that has been recently taught by the instructor. Eval of Student Learning 1. Multiple Choice Qs 2. True - False Qs - limited, low intelligence? 3. Matching Qs 4. Essay Type Qs * identification * evaluation Eval of Px Learning + return demo of procedure + interview the client and discussion and questioning Instructional asx - prioritization of problem list - before planning - conducted subjective report objective report
