Bab I INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the Problem Nowaday , English has become an International language so it is important for us to learn it. Now, In elementary school the students must be studying English . Teaching English in elementary school Is around simple vocabulary. The local content of elementary school curriculum has outlined that The objective of teaching English in Elementary is to raise students interest and delight in studying English . Beside they are hoped to able to communicate in very simple simple way, starting from What they have themselves and theirselves and their environment. In teaching English , as a teacher we have to know the target that should be reached. Such as ,fourth Fourth grade they have to reach 100 word, fifth grade they have to reach 200 word , and sixth grade Grade they have to reach 300 word( Department of Education, 1994) Some elementary school students feel afraid or nervous in learning English .it is because English as The first foreign language is rarely used in their daily life. It is caused by inappropriate techniques

Used by the teacher . They are not familiar with the language and they will feel frustrasted when They cannot mention the word and understand the meaning of the words . I can assume that vocabulary is a very important element of language since it plays an important Role in language . Because of that, importance of teaching and improving students vocabulary Must be considered . therefore , the teacher of english has the responsibility to create and determine The technique that can be used to improve the students vocabulary. It can create an enjoyable Teaching learning activity which can make students forget that they are learning . teaching Vocabulary through song can help students to learn naturally . Song is valuable aids in developing Students listening skill. There are many advantage of using at the classrom. It present new word And expression in contexts and the students become familiar with the pronunciation . it means Through song teacher can create very enjoyful teaching learning activity and makes students Learning easy without feeling afraid so students have high motivation in learning English Vocabulary.

1.2. Problem of the Research

Based on the background of problem above ,The problem in research is :


- Whether the students vocabulary increase after being through song?

1.3. Objective of the Research In relation to the problem of the research are to find out whether there was significance Difference of the students vocabulary and also to find out whether there was significance Increase of students vocabulary achievement after being taught through song.

1.4. Use of The Research The research is used to improve listening skill through song and also can be used as Information for English teacher especially about achievement of teaching vocabulary through song

1.5. Scope of the Research This research is a quantitative r research . The Research will be held in SDN 1 Panjang Utara and object of the research is fifth grade with 30 students . the material is based on The English curriculum of elementary school . they learn about the meaning and the form Of the word.

Bab II Frame Of Theory

2.1. Concept of Vocabulary Language is a means of communication that is made up of sentences that convey meaning . In the School, learning language means learning its vocabulary . The vocabulary plays an important role In language in which the vocabulary will make a language meangful. According to Hornby ( 1986 ) , vocabulary is a total number of words that make up the language . It would be impossible to learn a language without words or vocabularies support ( River , 1981) . It shows that people can do nothing in communication if they do not know the word or vocabulary. Vocabulary is a list of words , usually in alphabetical order and with explanation of their Meaning, less complete than dictionary . it means that we should understand the meianing . Wilkins ( 1993 ) says that without grammar little thing could be convey anything without Vocabulary. Without vocabulary , we can say nothing because vocabulary is the basic element of a language .

We can say that the quality of the language performance of students will depend on the their Quality of vocabulary .

2.2. Concept of Teaching Learning Vocabulary Vocabulary is an important factor in all language . Therefore, mastering vocabulary is Important for students , in order to able to communicate with others. In teaching vocabulary The teacher should consider the important point , that is meaning, form ,function, and Pronunciation of the word. The purpose of learning vocabulary is to make the students understand the meaning of the Words. Finnochiaro ( 1967 ) suggest that teaching and learning vocabulary is an activity Where the teacher and he students reintroduce some vocabulary items with all the structure And in the entire situation in which they can logically be used. Learning vocabulary means process of gaining knowledge of vocabulary . In first step ,the Learner will get information about vocabulary . Such as: how to spell ,to pronounce ,to use It in appropriate sentences as well as the meaning. The second is how the learner obtained And pronounced the words .

Wallace ( 1988 : 13 ) says that learning vocabulary is something more than memorizing list Of words . It is supported by Kriedler ( 1963:3 ) . He staes that in modern methods of Language teaching, vocabulary learning no longer consist of memorazing words, instead Words are usually introduced in meaningful context and practiced in an appropriate Sentence patterns. In teaching learning process , the teacher may also use gesture or commands because it will Make the students able to infer the meaning of the word easily.

2.3. Song in Language Teaching Song in short poem or verses set to music and intended to song . Song is marked by richnes Of content , poetical metaphor and symbol that emotionally reflected the world we live in. Song can be used to motivate the listeners positive emotion . Song can play a really important role in the language classroom. It can change the Athmosphere in the room within seconds ( Budden,2003 ) . Furthermore, songs can be used As the topic and way to pre-teach some of vocabulary. According to Jamalus ( 1979 ) , Songs are an art to express peoples felling through words and tones. Song consist of Several sentences. A simple song usually consist of four sentences ( Jamalus, 1988 ) . by

Singing a song , children have a chance to express their feeling. Song and music can help develop listening comprehension , facilities the acquisition of Pronunciation, vocabulary , structure , and about culture . song is valuable aids in Developing students listening skill.

2.4. Theoretical Assumption Vocabulary is one of language components that have an important role for the students Who learn a language because if the students have limited number of vocabularies , they Will fail to communicate by using the language both in oral and written form. In this research. The researcher focused on teaching vocabulary especially content words at The fifth year of elementary school by using song technique .based on the frame of Theories the researcher assumes that vocabulary through song at elementary school the Students vocabulary .

2.5. Hypothesis Based on the frame of theories and assumption . the researcher formulates the hypothesis Are there are significant increase of students vocabulary achievement after being taught Through song and also it can improve students vocabulary effectively.

Bab III Research Methology

3.1. Research Design This research use the pretest , treatments and posttest . The researcher design can be as Follows : T1 X T2

T1 = Pretest X = Treatments T2 = Posttest 3.2. Data Colecting In data collecting the data , this research use the folowing procedure which can be described as follow :

1. Giving the Pretest The perpose of the pretest is to know the students mastery of vocabulary before they are given the treatment . the research have 30 questions and the form of tests is multiple choice. 2. Giving the Posttest This test is given to know the students improvenent after they get the treatment . it is used to know how far the students have master English vocabulary after being taught Through song . similar to pretest , the research use a test in the form of multiple choice test . this test has the same difficulty as the pretest.

3.3. Analysis Data After conducting pretest and posttest ,the researcher was take the average score of the Pretest and Postest. The researcher examines the students scoring using the following steps: 1. Scoring the pretest and posttest 2. Tabulating the result of The Pretest and the Posttest. 3. Drawing conclusion from the tabulated of the pretest and postest
