A look back

As I look at the back-to-school section in this issue, Im reminded of how my own experience with nails actually began in school. In junior high I painted my nails weekly. There was even a day in P.E. when I let my friend take a yellow highlighter to my nails. In high school I wore flip-flops almost daily so I painted my toenails constantly. I remember the pure satisfaction of finding the perfect polish to match my lavender prom dress. I was first introduced to stiletto nails senior year because my AP English teacher always wore hers extra-long and pointy in outlandish colors that she let her young sons pick out. The truth is many of us can trace our style evolution (and pitfalls) to our time in school. And while we may have fallen into the trap of wearing trends others deemed cool, it was always refreshing to get a chance to start over again come September. I always got excited about going back to school. I would compare it with the rush of excitement I get now when I remove a chipped or outgrown design from my nails. While bare nails arent my thing, I do like the looks of them for a bit because they signify a fresh start. For a moment I realize that my nails can become anything and look however trendy, classic, or outstanding as I so desire. The power to go to a salon, try a new technique, or change my color every other day is literally at my tips. I may have outgrown the need to match my nail color to my dress and wear flip-flops daily, but the desire to do better with every fresh start never gets old. One things for sure: no more highlighter manicures.

[top] Me (left) with Ginny Geer (one of our cover artists) of Hey, Nice Nails. [bottom] In honor of our fashion section I am sharing this Oscar de la Rentainspired nail art that Ginny Geer created on my nails.

Patterns of lines and dots reminiscent of prints in other cultures define the tribal design. Ikat, chevrons, and geometric shapes sometimes get included into the mix for nail art that is heavy on the details. Bright color palettes have enhanced this look to make it a trendy must-try for nail enthusiasts everywhere.

The trends in the fashion world undeniably influence trends in the nail world. Fabrics, patterns, and even a designers name can accessorize your tips. Some nail artists take literal interpretations of clothing and transform it onto their nails by painting shoes, dresses, tuxedos, and zippers. The nail fashions featured in this section are definitely runway-worthy.
Fall fashion weeks occur every February, and spring shows start in September. Click here for a look at our fall photo gallery to see how to dress your nails this season.

ARTiST SpOTLighT
Chi Chi Xu, Cape Town, South Africa Nail artist and blogger Chi Chi Xu has always had a curiosity for beautiful things. She remembers drawing Xu on her nails when she was young. I started nail art from having a creative background rather than from the beautician/nail technician side of things. Her fascination with creating beautiful nails has naturally led her to appreciate the work of South Africas finest fashion designers. For those not familiar with South African fashion, Xu explains that it is more about a community of designers celebrating the multiple cultures and heritage of the country. The major difference between the South African fashion world and what we are used to seeing is the influence on nail art. Nail art is not as established here as it is in other countries, says Xu, so there are definitely great opportunities for growth and creativity. Xu recreated looks from Thula Sindi and Gavin Rajahs latest collections. Click here to see the original runway looks that inspired these haute nails.

Nothing shines quite like precious metals. Traditional gold, silver, and bronze are now being embellished with copper and rose gold. You can choose to rock a heavy metal look or a pristinely polished one. We mined the best of both worlds and featured those that met the gold standard here.
