2. INTRODUCTION
2.1 ORIENTATION OF THE PROPOSED STUDY Each environment is characterized by its unique terrain profile [1]. Each Propagation model is designed to cater for a specific terrain profile. Propagation models can however be corrected to fit another terrain profile.[1]

2.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Measure and calculate the amount of fading that will be encountered by a wave

2.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The propagation model will greatly assist in designing a networks that efficiently maximizes the spectrum allocated. Designing a network without a propagation model leads to tedious and inaccurate work. Help select the best location for setting up base stations

2.5 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

o

The lack of equipment to confirm the theoretical calculations

2.5 DE-LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

o

The study will only be comparing 3 models

3. LITERATURE

A communication system

Source: refer to [2]

The propagation path has many different obstructions, such as trees and buildings[1]. The field strength strongly depends on local environment [2]

3.2 PROPAGATION PATH-LOSS MODELS

3.2.1 Free space model

It calculates radio signal propagation attenuation in free space with no nearby obstacles to cause reflections or diffractions[3]

3.2.2 Hata model

Hata presented the urban area propagation loss as a standard formula and supplied correction equations for application to other situations[3].

3.2.3 COST-321 model

It is suitable for medium and large cities where the base station antenna height is above the surrounding buildings. The terrain configuration is only partly taken into consideration[3].

4. METHODOLOGY 4.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

o Quantitative approach o Model will be developed.

10

4.2 RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

MATLAB simulation software

11

4.3 PROCEDURE
Data Collection Modelling of the Propagation software A comparison of model calculations for loss and field strength for the three propagation models A comparison of the model signal strength with those already in existence Determine the correction factor

12

4.4

DATA ANALYSIS

Matlab will be used for all the calculations, plotting of graphs and creating the user interface.
