Dear Christian Friends;
Missouri near the outskirts, on the new National Highway No. 166 running between Spring
field, Missouri and Joplin,Missouri, is where the accident occurred. I noticed down the highway a safe distgince, that a car was leaving a small cafe or tavern on my right, and was approaching entry to the highway ahead of me. He slowed as though he were going to stop and wait for traffic to clear before he entered the highway, - so I continued without slow ing anymore to help clear the way he would use - but at a very unsafe distance these car
lights showed he was not going to stop and wait - or that he was even conscious of anyone
else being on the highway. He pulled out abruptly in the path of my car, and timing did not permit proper braking in order to avoid collision, so I swerved sharply to the extreme
left, (for I saw there was no oncoming traffic in the other lane) and headed for the field
-just off the shoulder on the opposite side of the highway I was traveling on, and if the
other car had slowed or attempted to stop"in the least, it seems, he would not have struck
me, for my sharp swerve to the left kept me from hitting him broadside but the other car did not slow down, and did strike the rear section of my car, as I was attempting to miss him, after he pulled out in front of me, leaving roe no time to stop. When his car etrucU mine, it turned my car around and the momentum and weight of my
I was pinned, my left leg folded under me, with car on top of I was drug clear of the wreck,
I never lost consciousness, and between cries for help and outbursts of extreme pain,
a local ambulance took me to the Freeman Hospital here in Joplin, Missouri where I am na-f preparing this letter from my bedside. Dr. Grantham, a bone specialist in Joplin was en
gaged as my Doctor.
X-rays showed my left ankle had been pierced with a piece of steel and
had very slightly chipped a bone near the main ankle joint no foreign substance was in try ankle that had to be removed or that could be seen in X-ray and no breaks, or fract ures anywhere in my whole body. I was in severe shock and extreme pain due to bad body
bruises and surface cuts on the left leg and hip. The doctor has put me on a heavy course
of penicilin daily, and watclied me carefully for any signs of itifection in the ankle joint. He says, if that ank].e heals up with no infection, 1^11 be as good as ever and on my wey, by the 15th of May -- with possibly the aid of a cane or a crutch till sore m\iscles and ligaments csin carry the load unaided. Now, he did say, if infection should occur in that wound, that the ankle wpuld have to be opened and drained and that I could expect trouble all my life from a bad ankle joint. To this date, no indications show any signs of infect
ion and the effects of shock are nearly all gone and I'm feeling very good again. I com
municated with my wife and family by telephone in Minneapolis the night after the accident, and before I went to X-ray room next morning. To this date, we feel that this whole exper ience was permitted of our heavenly father to strengthen our assurance in his providential watchful care over each and every one of us, in answer to the many prayers uttered on our behalf by those precious ones who know us and support us in their prayers and with their means. It would be spiritual pride of the grossest kind if we as a family felt that it was just our family prayers for each other and our personal welfare that brought such glorious answers and blessings. No, far be it from that, for we often think we can discern the power and spiritual resources that keep coming to us in a multitude of little ways eaoh and every day, through the intercessory prayers of our Saviour and Lord as well as those of our
brothers and sisters in Christ across the land.
Experienced Ambulance n^n, and others say, it was indeed extraordinary beyond degree that I was not more seriously injured and that I even remained alive through it all. that we give our whole attention to this sailing fund TODAY, A hurried response from individuals and groups is the real answer. God works through
men, but only through yielded souls who are growing daily in Faith and Love.
What help you may personally be able to give, or what gifts you may be able to enlist among your friends or chiirch groups, will be a very large factor in sending the "Gospel to Cebu" July 17th,
We have never written a letter in all of our ministry, that

Church of Christ, Springfield, Illinois, The Minnesota Bible College, The Church of Christ in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, and The Church of Christ in Madelia, Minnesota. At present, we are taking time out to recuperate more fully for the travel of the next few weeks, answering urgent business letters, and our current plans are to leave for the coast in the next few days, speaking as able enroute. We deeply regret having to cancel many scheduled speaking dates, but know that our Christian brethren will understand. This accident cmd emergency surgery, just cut us out of getting to be with our Brethren in the deep South, where we were so anxious to renew old ties and establish new friendships but God will work that around for us someday in the future we trust.
We are deeply grateful to the Christian Brethren who did so much for us during this month of
illness in caring for the family and our belongings, and all our needs. Space forbids trying to mention
each and every one personally who were so close to us and did help us directly so much during the time of upset for our family. To all that sent notes of cheer and encouragement, flowers and other means of remembrance at this season, we say Thank You!, and God bless you one and all.
