Along with al-Aqsa Islamic Bank and Beit el-Mai

justified the closure by labeling HLF and the other charities

Specifically regarding Holy Land, he added that it

While no specific charges have ever been presented to HLF

closure the FBI released an unofficial 49-page "memo" to

memo constituted the bulk of the information reported in
the media, but many doubt the authenticity and reliability
of such a memo. "Much of the information in this memo

of detained Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza,"

UNIONS, RELIGIOUS GROUPS WILL STAND TOGETHER FOR LABOR DAY

BYLINE: LARRY B. STAMMER

BODY:
With Labor Day approaching Sept. 6, unions and religious groups are underscoring their common ground on issues
of social and economic justice.
Known as "Labor in the Pulpit," their program was launched three years ago by the AFL-CIO and the National
Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, a nonprofit group of religious leaders. More than 400 services were held last
year, the union said. At least as many are planned this year, including some in Southern California.
Los Angeles religious leaders such as Episcopal Bishop Frederick H. Borsch have been known for practicing what
they preach. For example, they have joined with labor unions in campaigning for contracts for hotel workers and an
ordinance requiring Los Angeles city contractors to pay their workers a "living wage."
Meanwhile, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles, said that despite a healthy
economy, the gap in family income continues to widen. He called for "a strong, active, democratic labor movement."
"Many of the values embedded in the labor movement's search for social justice reflect our own faith values,"
Mahony said, speaking for the nation's Catholic bishops as chairman of the U.S. Catholic Conference's Domestic Policy
Committee. "We seek public policies that protect and promote strong families, expand a stable middle class, create
decent jobs, and reduce the level of poverty and need in our society," he said.

JEDDAH, 27 March — The Director of the Saudi AI-Haramain Charitable Foundation in Somalia, Al-Zayid Omer Idris Shami, has said
that his office will continue to carry out its humanitarian activities in the poor African nation, denying that his office is involved in
any illegal activities

The United States recently froze the assets of AI-Haramain Charitable Foundation's two offices in Somalia and Bosnia, accusing the
charity of funding terrorist organizations — including AI-Qaeda and its alleged local cells in Somalia.

"Washington acted on inaccurate information about the activities of AI-Haramain. We will continue to serve needy people," Shami
said in a press release, which Arab News received yesterday.

"AI-Haramain takes care of more than 3,000 orphans, finances over 100 schools and distributes thousands of tons of foodstuffs
annually," the statement continued.

Somalia's socio-economic infrastructure, including all government buildings, libraries, schools, universities and hospitals, have been
destroyed or looted during the ongoing civil war. Law and order has also collapsed, while an estimated one miiiion people are either
displaced within the country or have sought refuge abroad, "for the last 11 years of anarchy and civil strife, Arab and Islamic non-
governmental organizations have focused on providing us humanitarian assistance," Ahmed Muhammad Mahmoud, a teacher at an
Arab NGO-funded secondary school in Mogadishu, told Arab News by telephone.

He added that AI-Haramain foundation is one of the largest aid groups in the country.

"The IMGOs have invested in a series of important welfare projects, such as orphanages and schools. The most useful projects are
the renovation of schools and the payment of teachers' salaries," he added. "Now children at all levels get a basic of education."

Mahmoud said most Somalis have expressed their surprise at the US decision to freeze the assets of the AI-Haramain's local office.

About Islam and American Muslims

What is Islam?
t 'f *';
Islam is not a new religion. It is the same truth that God revealed to
all His prophets throughout history. Islam is both a religion and a
complete way of life. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy and
forgiveness that should not be associated with acts of violence against
the innocent.

Who are Muslims and what do they believe?

There are an estimated 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide. No more than

20 percent of Muslims live in the Arabic-speaking world. The country
with the largest Muslim population is Indonesia. Muslims believe in
One, Unique, and Incomparable God. They believe in the Day of
Judgment and individual accountability for actions. Muslims believe in
a chain of prophets beginning with Adam and including Noah,
Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, David, Solomon,
and Jesus. God's eternal message was reaffirmed and finalized by the
Prophet Muhammad (peace be on them all). One becomes a Muslim
by saying, 'There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is the
messenger of God." By this declaration, the" person announces faith in
all of God's messengers.

What is the Quran?

The Quran is the record of the exact words revealed by God through
the Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad. It was memorized by
Muhammad and then dictated to his companions. The text of the
