There Are Four Security Vectors at an Airport


- Checked Baggage
- Passenger Screening Checkpoints
- Airport Access Controls to Secure Areas of the Airport

- Cargo

Each Vector Has People, Systems and Programs,


and Technologies in Place Intended to Reduce the
Vulnerability of an Attack or Crime
Security Vector
Checked Baggage
Checked Baggage Security System Includes:
- Computer-Assisted Passenger Prescreening (CAPPS) at
Check-In for Identifying Passengers That Require Additional
Security Measures (Known as Selectees)
- Bulk Explosives Detection Systems (CTX and L-3) for
Screening Selectee Checked Baggage.
- Trace Explosives Detection Devices Used for Additional
Screening of Checked Baggage in Order to Resolve Threat
Items.

- Equipment Operators
- Alternative Methods for Screening Checked Baggage Where
EDS is not Available Includes Trace, Advanced X-ray,
Physical Search, K9, and PPBM.
Security Vector
Passenger Screening Checkpoints

Screening Checkpoint Security System Includes:


- Walk Through Metal Detectors and Hand-Held Wands for
Screening Passengers.
- Threat Image Projection (TIP) Ready X-Ray (TRX) for Screening
Passengers' Carry-on Items.
- Screeners and Supervisors.
- Trace Explosives Detection Devices (ETD) for Screening Carry-on
Items as a Secondary Security Measure.
- Computer Based Training Platforms for Screener Initial and
Recurrent Training
- Threat Image Projection for Testing and Measuring Screener
Performance

Airport Access Control
Airport Access Control System Includes:
- Security Systems Used to Limit Access to Secure Areas of the
Airport to Authorized Individuals (Door Locks, Cipher Locks,
CCTV, Alarmed Doors, Vehicle Gates, Biometrics, Card-Swipe
and PIN, Iris Scanner, Finger Print Scanner)
- Airport Parameter Protection (Primarily Fencing)
- Employment Investigations and Criminal Checks Using FBI
Fingerprint Checks for Employees at the Airport Requesting
Airport ID for Unrestricted Access to Secure Areas of the
Airport (Airport Operator Can Delegate This Requirement to
Airport Users)
- Issuing, Controlling and Accounting for Airport ID (Airport
Operator Responsibility)
- Employees at the Airport - ID Display and Challenge

Cargo

Cargo Security System Includes:


- Known Shipper Concept - Screening of Cargo Not Required
- Unknown Shipper - ID Check, Shipper Certification and
Screening of Cargo Required Using One the Following
Methods: Trace, K-9, X-ray or Physical Search
- FAA-Approved Indirect Air Carriers - lACs Certifications
Allows Shipment of Cargo from Known and Unknown
Shippers.
• Known Shipper Cargo: Screening Not Required.
• Unknown Shipper Cargo Must be Separated and Screened
Using One the Following Methods: Trace, K-9, X-ray or
Physical Search
