Sus tainable as h utilization is one of the key c onc erns at N T P C . T he A s h U tilization D ivis ion (A U D ), s et up in 1 9 9 1 , s trives to derive maximum us age from the vas t quantities of as h produc ed at its c oal bas ed power s tations . T he A U D proac tively formulates polic ies , plans and programmes for as h utilization. I t further monitors the progres s in thes e ac tivities and works for developing new s egments of as h utilization. A s h U tilization C ell at eac h s tation, handles as h utilization ac tivities .

T he quality of fly as h produc ed at N T P C s power s tations is extremely good with res pec t to finenes s , low unburnt c arbon and has high pozzolanic ac tivity and c onforms to the requirements of I S 3 8 1 2 - 2 0 0 3 - P ulverized Fuel A s h for us e as P ozzolana in C ement, C ement M ortar and C onc rete. T he fly as h generated at N T P C s tations is ideal for us e in manufac ture of C ement, C onc rete, C onc rete produc ts , C ellular c onc rete produc ts , Bric ks /bloc ks / tiles etc . T o fac ilitate availability of dry fly as h to end us ers , dry fly as h evac uation and s torage s ys tem have been s et up at c oal bas ed s tations . Further, at N T P C - Rihand fac ility for loading fly as h into rail wagons has been provided s o that fly as h c an be trans ported in bulk quantity through railway network. Suc h fac ility is als o being provided at all new up c oming c oal bas ed power s tations . O ver the years , the A s h U tilization level has reac hed from meagre 0 .3 million tonne in 1 9 9 1 - 1 9 9 2 to 2 6 .0 3 million tonne in 2 0 1 0 11.
