Starting a Band Proposal

Introduction: The benefits of forming a band program for the students will allow the students the ability to express him/herself musically and allow for them to take part in an extracurricular activity as well. Students who join band will be active in multiple areas of human intelligences. They will activate their physicality and reading abilities when they are playing music in band. In addition, the students will have better language, math, and general-life skills that can be applied to all of their other courses. With starting band, the students will develop a sense of ownership over their playing. Overview: Students will perform in a wind band and learn how to read music and then perform various concerts throughout the year. Each student will either play any of these instruments: Flute B-flat Clarinet Alto Saxophone Trumpet Trombone Baritone Percussion: Bells *** Harder Instruments (ie Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, and Tuba) will be added if the director feels it is appropriate to move students over to a new instrument. It will be opened to all of the students that are part of the Lagonda campus with Catholic Central Schools (Grade 4-6). This will be a volunteer ensemble, where students are not required to join this group. A letter to the students and their parents will be distributed that details about the program and when and how the instrumental orientation will take place (see attachment 1). Students will be presented the instruments listed above with players to demonstrate how they sound and will be able to hold the instruments; this way they will be given the opportunity to experience the instrument. They will have a form that is given (see attachment 2) that explains how they can choose the instruments. Schedule: This program will be a before school program and the students will rotate among their homogeneous groups (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion), it will either be a 2 or 3 day rotation (dependent on the population of the students playing percussion).

Schedule layout for 2 weeks: 3-day Rotation: Monday Woodwind Percussion 2-day Rotation: Monday Woodwind Brass & Percussion Tuesday Brass & Percussion Woodwind Wednesday Woodwind Brass & Percussion Thursday Brass & Percussion Woodwind Friday Woodwind Brass & Percussion Tuesday Brass Woodwind Wednesday Percussion Brass Thursday Woodwind Percussion Friday Brass Woodwind

For preparing for concerts the full group will meet. During the week. Curriculum: The curriculum will be established by the method series Essential Elements 2000 by Tim Lautzenheiser, John Higgins, Charles Menghini, Paul Lavender, Tom Rhoades & Don Bierschenk . The pace will be based on the students natural progression through their playing. The instructor may or may not complete the first book in the series, but the overall goal is complete the first book. For a classroom setting: There will be playing quizzes that will come from the book that the students will be evaluated on their playing accuracy. In addition, there will be instrument check-offs, where students will be evaluated on bringing in their necessary materials (ie music book, pencil, and maintenance materials). Lastly, students will be evaluated on arriving to their performances. Finances: I ask that each of the students will rent the instruments from an outside source, particularly Kincaids Music Inc. They have very affordable rental fees. The instruments will not have to be covered by the school system. I need help how to write this section because I dont want to sound rude
