8.1 SUMMARY This study was conducted at Dona Juana Actub Lluch Memorial Elementary School during the School year 2008-2009, in which 30 respondents were chosen coming from the first grade section Makadyos under the classroom adviser Ms. Ludivic Mae Zamayla. The purpose of this study was to find out the Effectiveness of Malunggay leaf decoction as an antihelminthic among these selected School Children.

Iii

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions: 1. Is there a significant reduction of ascaris ovum count with the use of malunggay decoction? 2. Is there a significant difference between the use of placebo and malunggay decoction in reducing ascaris ovum count?

8.2 Research and Methodology This thesis entitled The Effectiveness of Malunggay Leaf as an Antihelminthic Among Selected School Children in Iligan City, SY 2008-2009. Is an experimental research. This research used the Pretest-Posttest experimental design or before and after only experimental technique in which this design involves the observation of the dependent variables at two points in time before and after the treatment. The goal of this research wes to determine the significant relationship of the variables used. The Pre test-Post test Experimental design involved the collection of pretest data, also known as baseline data of the dependent variable before the experimentation and posttest data or outcome data after it. The Pretest data was gathered based on the subjects criteria made by the researchers who were chosen to the study before the experiment. While during Posttest, data were gathered from selective subjects during the experimentation for five (5) consecutive days through administration of malunggay decoction and placebo. And Determination of Reduction or Increase in Ascaris ovum count was obtained through Fecalysis after three (3) days of administration.

8.3 Findings Based on the analysis and interpretation of data it was found out that the malunggay leaf decoction used has a significant effect in ascaris ovum count reduction amongst the (10) grade one pupils who were treated for five days. The study showed that the simple decoctions usability is practical effective. While the control group, administered by the placebo, registered thirty percent (30%) or 3 out of 10 subjects showed decrease in ova density. While sixty percent (60%) or 6 out 10 subjects registered increase in ova density. And ten percent (10%) or only one subject showed decrease in ascaris ovum density yielding it statiscally insignificant. (See Table 1.2) The positive effect of the decoction has significantly affected reduction of ascaris ova, revealed in the results of the post-treatment fecalysis. There is a significant difference between the use of malunggay leaf decoction and placebo.

8.4 Conclusion In the light with the findings of the study, a conclusion was drawn that there is a signicant difference between the use of malunggay leaf decoction and placebo. Whrein, malunggay showed to be significant or effective in reducing ascaris ovum count while the placebo resulted to as no effect at all.

8.5 Recommendations In view of the foregoing findings and conlusions, the proponents recommend that another study will be conducted using a considerably bigger population to really establish a better more reliable results on the effectivity of the designed decoction.

A more potent decoction with an increased volume of malunggay may also be used for further study. Based on the fecalysis test where Giardia lambia and Trichuris trichura. Turned out negative after the treatment of the decoction. Thus, an indepth look into other parasites or protozoans that may also affected by the use of the malunggay decoction is recommended as an added scope for the study other than just ascaris. A literature was cited claiming that malunggay pod is the identified part of the tree that possesses the antihelminthic property. This warrants a separate research to find out if the claim is true. For the health authorities particularly the City Health Office of Iligan and Department of Health in general, that they should consider making a thorough study on the plant (Moringaceae) and its health benefits so that they may include them in their programs in promoting alternative medicine in the local communities. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The researcher wish to express our appreciation and thanks to the special people, friends, students, and relatives who gave their support for the realization of the study. Expression of thanks and gratitude are due to the following: Mrs. Elizabeth L. Alagar, beloved Dean of CONMHA for being a mother and a mentor, who unselfishly shared her brilliant advices and must knows in life, and in giving valuable suggestions; Mrs. Maria Cristina Darlyn Q. Docog, research adviser and competent Clinical Coordinator of CONMHA, for her objective criticisms, brilliant suggestions and intellectual stimulation which invaluably enriched this research;
