Elizabeth Eaton
elected as first
woman ELCA
presiding bishop
The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton,
bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
(ELCA) Northeastern Ohio Synod, was elected Aug.
14 presiding bishop of the ELCA at the 2013 ELCA
Churchwide Assembly. She was elected on the fifth
ballot.
There were 889 votes cast, and 445 votes were
needed for an election. Eaton received 600 votes and
the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop,
received 287. Eaton is the ELCA's first woman
presiding bishop-elect.
We are a church that is overwhelmingly European in
a culture that is increasingly pluralistic. We need to
welcome the gifts of those who come from different
places, that is a conversation we need to have as a
church," Eaton told the assembly shortly after the
election.
Prior to becoming synod bishop, Eaton served as
pastor for ELCA congregations in Ohio. She earned a
Master's of divinity degree from Harvard Divinity
School in Cambridge, Mass., and a Bachelor's degree
in music education from the College of Wooster in
Wooster, Ohio.

Lydia Circle, the remaining circle of Women of
the ELCA, meets for bible study and fellowship
the third Wednesday of each month, September
thru May, in the library at Zion. We will begin
September 18, 11 am. We have chosen to read
and discuss The Evolution of the Word by Mar-
cus J. Borg this year. The book is a study of the
chronology of the New Testament, available at
Barnes & Noble or Amazon. We welcome you to
join us.

LIRS invites you and your congregation to sign up and par-
ticipate in an interfaith 40 Days of Fasting, Prayer and Ac-
tion for immigration reform. This national initiative is part of
our interfaith coalition effort to keep the pressure on the
U.S. Congress after the August recess to pass compas-
sionate immigration reform legislation that reflects Ameri-
can values and honors the God-given digni-
ty and right of every individual.
The 40 Days Fast Action for Immigration
Reform starts the Sunday after Labor Day
and lasts from September 8 to October 18. This is an op-
portunity for faith communities to come together and make
our voices heard on what is perhaps the most important
civil and human rights issue of the day. There is a great
deal of flexibility in the duration and length of the fasting
period. We are calling for a spiritual fast which involves
abstaining from something in order to focus more fully on
prayer and the community. This can mean refraining from
snacks between meals, skipping one or two meals a day,
abstaining only from certain foods, or a total fast from all
food for an entire day or longer. It may also mean fasting
from something other than food, for example from televi-
sion or Facebook, or something else that distracts us from
communion with God and with Gods people. Indeed, peo-
ple of faith can fast from anything.
Congregations as a body and individuals can decide on
what type of fasting they will have, when and how long to
engage in the action as long as it happens within the
timeframe specified. Each day of fasting can be devoted to
one of LIRS core principles of immigration reform: Path-
way to citizenship; Humane enforcement of immigration
laws; Family unity; Protection of refugees and asylum seek-
ers; Protection for U.S. citizens and migrant workers. The
micro-site for the action (http://fastaction.us/en/) has a
wealth of information and resources including suggested
interfaith liturgical prayers to accompany each fast. Infor-
mation in Spanish is also available, http://fastaction.us/es/.
The key is to use the breaking of the fast as an opportunity
Page 5
Volume 11, Issue 8
to reach out to other faith communities, members of
Congress and the media to advocate for a fair and
compassionate immigration reform. Please join us and
other faith communities across the country as we pray,
fast and advocate to reform our broken immigration
system. Your commitment and action can make a real
difference in the lives of millions of Gods children who
happen to be undocumented.
The registration deadline is ap-
proaching for the 12
th
annual Olivia
Rose Memorial Golf Tournament,
supporting the Let Me Shine Chris-
tian Play & Preschool at Zion. The event is Sun-
day, Sept. 22, at Stansbury Park Golf Course, with
tee times beginning at 1 p.m. and continuing until
about 2:30 p.m.
Payment is due Sept. 8. Please make checks to Let
Me Shine Preschool. The cost is $50 per golfer,
covering 18 holes with cart and refreshments,
sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
The four-person scramble format is designed to
make the day enjoyable for golfers of all ages and
abilities in a low-key setting. So if you play golf
once a year, this is the day. Individuals and two-
somes easily can be combined to
form a team, so don't hesitate to sign
up on that basis.
