INSTALLATION
1. NATIVE INSTRUMENTS KONTAKT
Copy the entire Bowed Gamelan folder to anywhere you like on your hard drive. Make sure you keep that folder structure as it is, so that the Kontakt instruments can nd their samples. (If you dont need the EXS24 instruments you can erase that folder but never erase the Samples folder ).
2. EXS24
Copy the entire Bowed Gamelan folder to anywhere you like on your hard drive. Then move the contents of the EXS folder to: user/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments Keep the rest of the data together so that you (and EXS24) can nd it. EXS24 will need the sample data in the Samples subfolder.
3. ABLETON LIVE
Double click the Bowed Gamelan.alp le, and this will launch an installer program to install Bowed Gamelan into your Live Library.
INTRODUCTION
Following a Soniccouture tradition of playing instruments the wrong way, we present this unique library of a Bowed Gamelan instrument. This library is actually just one instrument of the gamelan ensemble, the ugal. Its pitched in the middle of the gamelan range, so is quite versatile and generally leads the gangsa section of a traditional Balinese group. This instrument has 14 keys which cover a range of almost 3 octaves.
LIBRARY SPECS
The instrument is sampled at 44.1kHz, 24 bit, in mono. There are ve round robins of both the main bowed sound, and ve round robins of the key-off (release) ringing of the instrument for a total of 140 samples. The sustain samples are looped with a bow change included in the loop, for a natural sounding sustain.

THE KONTAKT INSTRUMENT
FRONT PANEL
In the Kontakt version the front panel gives you control over many aspects of the Bowed Gamelan playback. There are knobs for Cutoff and Resonance, Attack and Release, a High Pass Filter, the Key Off (ring) level, a Filter Envelope amount as well as Filter Attack and Decay, Reverb and Delay sends and a choice of Soniccoutures favourite IR reverbs in the drop down menu. You can also turn on Double which will engage a second instrument layer, then two knobs will appear to allow you to adjust the Width and Detune of the pair. The Normal Tuning button can be clicked to turn on Balinese Tuning, in which case the instrument is tuned to the same scale as our larger Balinese Gamelan library. (There are of course many Balinese tunings, so this wont necessarily match to any other Balinese instruments you might own other than our own.)

MIDI CONTROL PAGE
At the top right of the front panel there is a menu that allows you to select Front Panel or MIDI Control. In the MIDI Control page you can assign MIDI CCs to most of the front panel parameters. This is especially handy if you have a hardware MIDI controller or want to sequence changes to these parameters. After setting up these controls, you can save the instrument and it will remember your CC assignments.
THE EXS24 INSTRUMENT

First make sure you copy the Bowed Gamelan - Ugal.exs file to your Sampler Instruments folder. ( user/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments ) When you next launch Logic, you will see the instrument available in the EXS24 drop down menu.
THE ABLETON LIVE INSTRUMENT RACKS

After installing Bowed Gamelan to your Live Library, you will find two Instrument Racks in the Instrument Racks/Soniccouture folder, Bowed Ugal (Doubled) and Bowed Ugal (Single).
Bowed Ugal (Doubled) is a detuned layer version of the instrument. It includes knobs for Filter Cutoff and Resonance, Key Off level, Reverb, Attack and Release, as well as the Detune and Width of the layered pair. The Single version of the instrument has slightly different controls, including Filter Type and Spread:
