THE UNDOING OF DESTINY

Written by Peter McCarthy

FADE IN. EXT. HIGHWAY DITCH - NIGHT SUPER: 3:59AM

DOUG EMMERSON, 30s, kneels on the ground next to the passenger-side window of an overturned Honda Pilot. He holds a bloody knife in his hands. Inside the car, KATHY GECKO, 20s, hangs upside down, strapped in by her safety belt. The DRIVER, 40s, has his eyes closed. He may be dead, or may be unconscious--we dont know. KATHY Stick to the plan. You promised.

DOUG It didnt have to end like this. KATHY Yes it did. DOUG But he was our son! KATHY Which is precisely why he had to die. We couldnt allow that baby to be born with the knowledge of the monster he would one day become. Kathy clutches her stomach, wincing and breathing in sharply through clenched teeth. DOUG I cant see you like this. KATHY You did the right thing. DOUG You keep telling me that, but it doesnt make it true. KATHY When I die, the baby dies. (beat) I know. DOUG

2. KATHY Look, Doug, I didnt ask to be given this...this curse or gift or whatever it is, but the only thing I know is that I saw our babys future and the terrible things he would do. We didnt have a choice. DOUG Yes we did. You couldnt be certain his life wouldve ended up that way. KATHY Yes...I could. Just some kill mean DOUG because you had some vision, dream, that our child would all those people...it doesnt anything.

KATHY Some things are unavoidable. DOUG We could have helped him. No. KATHY Enough, Doug. Let me die.

DOUG Cmon Kathy, please. Doug waves his hand in front of her face, but her eyes dont make any sign of recognition. Instead they stare ahead blankly. Kathy? DOUG (CONTD)

SIRENS blare from far off, and get LOUDER with every passing second. An AMBULANCE followed by a COP CAR both SCREECH to a halt alongside the road a few feet away from the upturned car. A team of PARAMEDICS run down the slight incline, carrying a gurney. Doug stands up from beside the car and holds his hands in the air, the right hand still gripping the blade. The paramedics stop dead.

3. DOUG (CONTD) Im not dangerous, I swear. A COP, 40s, beer-gut and mustache, barrels down the hill with his gun pointed at Dougs head. COP Get on the fucking ground! On. The ground. Now! Get.

Doug returns to his knees and gets one last looks at Kathys dead face before the Cops grinds his knee into Dougs back and cuffs him, rubbing his face in the dirt. CUT TO: INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - LATER Doug sits across the table from a DETECTIVE, 30s, who lights a CIGARRETTE. DETECTIVE (offering one to Doug) You smoke? A beat as Doug stares at the wall, avoiding eye-contact. will do this throughout the interrogation. I Quit. DOUG He

DETECTIVE Lets talk about what happened earlier. Whyd you kill Ms. Gecko? DOUG Didnt have a choice. DETECTIVE Are we not all in control of our actions? DOUG That thing inside her...it couldnt live. DETECTIVE I presume you mean her baby, Mr. Emmerson?

4. DOUG Yes. The baby. You may not believe what Im about to say...but Kathy could see things normal people cant. That baby wouldve ended up murdering three women. But not only murdering them. No, not only that. Hed torture em first. DETECTIVE And she saw this event happening? Why not just abort the child? DOUG Her husband wouldnt let her. And even if he did it wouldnt work. That baby couldnt have died by any morning after pill. It needed to be the knife. That knife. DETECTIVE You mean the one you used to stab her to death with? Doug finally stops avoiding eye-contact and glares at the Detective. DOUG To undo a werewolfs creation, one needs a silver-blade. FADE OUT.
