Gandhiji believed in goodness and he derived his greatness, his towering stature from that immaculate goodness of the spirit which admitted nothing narrow, mean or selfish in its scheme of things. The world, on the other hand, believes in everything that gratifies the self, pampers pride and promotes power. The cult of self-aggrandizement, practiced at the expense of others tears and blood, led recently to two devastating world wars in quick succession. Today pettiness, jealousy, intolerance and hatred are stalking through the earth, and the specter of another war, spelling rain to our vaunted civilization, looms ominously on the horizon. The over all picture would appear to be one of unrelieved gloom. But the noble sentiments evoked by Gandhijis vicarious atonement for the sins of misguided men raise hopes for degraded humanity.. In spite of errors and distractions, truth and beauty somehow still live in the depths of our beings. Otherwise, bow could this erring, sinning, self-centered world be irresistibly drawn to that upright, holy selfless man after his death? Another towering personality who stole the show was Lenin, the Grand Repudiator. He repudiated everything. He repudiated, God. King, Country, morals, debts, rents, interest, the laws and customs of centuries, all contracts written or implied, the whole structure such as it is of human society. In the end he repudiated himself. He repudiated the Communist system. He confessed its failure in an all-important sphere. He proclaimed the New Economic Policy and recognized private trade.
