Composites
In a world where lightweight and durable composites are increasingly replacing conventional materials, para-aramid fibers play an important role. They are essential for reinforcing composites where weight reduction and excellent damage tolerance are required. For over three decades, Aramid has been committed to providing high-tech solutions for composite-based applications in marine and aerospace construction, civil engineering, ground transportation, engineering plastics, and sporting goods and the number of applications is growing.
Marine industry
Thanks to the ongoing trend toward larger, more luxurious motorboats and sailing yachts, and a distinct rise in fast cruising and racing, the demand for greater strength and safety has grown in recent years. In sails, Aramid is used for its high modulus, low weight and flex fatigue resistance. The strength, stiffness and dimensional stability of Aramid reinforced laminated sails help make it possible for racing yachts to compete at the highest level. Our other high-performance para-aramid fiber Aramid has proven itself in the sailcloth industry because of its exceptional flex fatigue and strength. are available in a black yarn version. Finally, in hulls, Aramid brings a wide range of benefits, including high strength, energy absorption, low weight and vibration- and sounddampening properties.
Aerospace industry As weight is a critical factor in this high-tech industry, ARAMID is often used to reinforce composite constructions such as fairings and airfreight containers. Aramid containment belts are also used in turbine engines to protect the passenger compartment in case of engine failure.Industrial components
Aramid is used in different kinds of industrial components, like helmets, speaker cones, bottom
plates for its high modulus, damage tolerance and strength. It is also used in rods for circuit breakers, where the combination of high modulus and aramid dielectric properties offer specific advantages.
Ground transportation
As the costs of transport rise, lightweight, high-strength alternatives to more traditional materials are becoming increasingly attractive. With its combination of low density and excellent mechanical and physical properties, Aramid is becoming a material of choice in the design of lightweight parts for heavy-duty purposes.
Strengthening of structures
Aramid fabrics
The deterioration of concrete structures is demanding increasing attention around the world. Several repair techniques have been developed, and solutions often make use of Aramid blends . One widely adopted technique is column wrapping, whereby an aramid fabric is wrapped around concrete columns that need reinforcement. This is followed by resin impregnation and curing. Column wrapping is used for repairing old and deteriorating structures, and on structures that require additional reinforcement (e.g., to meet earthquake regulations).
Concrete reinforcement
FRP rods
To reinforce concrete structures, FRP rods based on Aramid fibers can be used as alternatives to conventional steel pre-stressing bars. In addition to excellent tensile mechanical properties, they offer superior corrosion resistance compared to steel. And thanks to the dielectric nature of aramid fibers, these rods offer additional advantages in cases where electrical conductivity is not allowed (e.g., to avoid electromagnetic interference).
Short-cut fibers
Aramid fibers are used to replace steel fibers in ultra-high-performance concrete particularly in special situations where corrosion resistance and injury prevention are key requirements.
Masonry reinforcement
Grid
In masonry reinforcement, Aramid fiber blend grid is used as an alternative to steel mesh. In addition to its mechanical properties, a Aramid mesh offers advantages over steel due to its easy installation, resistance to corrosion, and superior lifetime.
Geotextiles
Due to its high strength, high modulus and good dimensional stability (low creep), Aramid offers unique solutions for the geotextile market particularly in situations where traditional materials, such as polyester and polypropylene, do not meet the requirements.

Engineering plastics
Engineering plastics must meet increasingly stringent requirements. The trend is toward more compact designs and smaller components that are subject to greater stresses, such as higher temperatures and operating speeds. And at every step of the way, these requirements need to be met without compromising on durability -
this more evident than in the offshore Oil & Gas industry. The result is a trend towards replacing steel with lightweight high-performance materials. This is especially true for applications for deeper and more remote waters, and where new technologies are being developed to enable existing fields to be exploited more efficiently. In addition, the performance requirements of materials for underwater use are becoming increasingly stringent, as working pressures and temperatures become ever higher, and as more aggressive crudes are extracted.
Friction products
As brakes become smaller, the performance of friction materials needs to better than ever. Thats why Aramid is continually developing advanced solutions to meet market needs, both today and tomorrow. Aramid is the market leader in friction materials, and its products set the standard for quality and performance in friction products around the globe.
Heat-protection products
Aramid fiber -resistant clothing is recognized around the world for its superior quality, performance and reliability, and for its combination of excellent protection and maximum comfort.
Reinforced pipes
Vast networks of pipes have been installed around the world for the transportation of liquids, gases and solids. Each year, new pipelines are installed many by the oil and gas industry to replace existing pipes, to create new transportation connections, or for use in new applications. The standard material used in these pipes is steel, but its vulnerability to corrosion can cause major problems.
Market developments On-shore oil fields are characterized by a dense distribution of oil wells. These oil wells are connected to trunk lines by so-called flowlines. The trunk lines transport the oil to ship-loading facilities or oil-processing plants. Over the lifetime of an oil well, pressure in the well needs to be increased in order to maintain acceptable output. When steel is used for this type of application, it can suffer significantly from corrosion. Chemicals in the oil can corrode the inside of the pipe, while weather conditions and a salty environment can cause outside corrosion. Even in wellequipped, well-managed, well-maintained pipeline systems in oil fields, leakage due to corrosion is an inevitable hazard. However, pipes which contain Aramid as a reinforcement material can be 100% non-metalic, therefore non-corrosive, light-weight and flexible. After years of thorough testing, the pipe-using industries can now take advantage of a product that immediately resolves some of the major problems in traditional flowlines, leading to better output and less waste. A unique solution Twarons high modulus, high strength (even at elevated temperatures), high tenacity versus low weight, and excellent corrosion resistance give it a significant advantage over other reinforcement materials, such as glass and carbon fiber. Twaron reinforced pipes are: Light-weight Highly flexible Corrosion-resistant Have high-pressure ratings Extremely reliable Can be certified according to ISO 9080 and API RP 15S and others
This combination of features make it extremely attractive in the oil and gas industry if not a truly unique and sustainable solution. And for those cases where resistance to even the highest temperatures is required, we can offer an even stronger reinforcement alternative with Aramid Applications Twaron reinforced pipes can be designed to withstand a range of high operating pressures and temperatures (e.g., 90 bar, 1300 Psi, at 65C or 150F). They can also be produced and transported in continuous lengths of up to several hundred meters without couplings. Teijin Aramid has strongly supported its partners with the development of a Twaron-reinforced thermoplastic pipe (RTP) to overcome many of the issues that affect existing steel-based pipe systems. It is lightweight and flexible. RTP is also fast and easy to install, low-maintenance, and has an operating lifetime of up to 50 years. Because of these properties, RTP is expected to play an important role in the transportation of oil, water and gas particularly in the extreme climatic conditions found in deserts, the arctic or the tropics.
Customized reinforcement
Aramid fiber offers customized reinforcement solutions in a wide range of cable applications, including: ADSS Indoor and outdoor FTTH Duct cables A variety of products that protect cables from almost everything from water penetration to hunters buckshot. Spin-off products include ripcord and the reinforcement of earphone cords and ignition wire. We are one of the early pioneers of reinforcement technology for fiber-optic cables, and as this market has developed, we have gained an in-depth understanding of the causes of cable damage. Bending, stretching and mechanical stress are the most common threats, and we have addressed them by developing a number of protective solutions using Aramid fiber . AF is available in both high and standard modulus and in linear densities ranging from 420 to 20,000 dtex. Twaron has both high strength and high modulus, and is further enhanced by its dielectric properties and its resistance to corrosion and high temperatures. Whats more, its flexibility facilitates reliable mechanical fixation of the cable, including good connectorization. Finally, its small negative coefficient of thermal expansion improves the temperature performance of the cable. Twaronreinforced cables also have enhanced resistance to electric discharges, lightning strikes, ice load, storms, and earthquakes. Together, these various properties make it an excellent alternative to steel and E-glass. The key benefits of using Aramid: Easy installation Long cable lifetimes Makes long spans possible Ensures reliable connectorization Enables minimal cable diameters Waterblocking available
Some examples of our innovative product concepts: Waterblocking: a cost-effective way to make fiber-optic cables water-tight Ripcords: making installation more reliable, they are also available in a range of colours Ballistic tape: protecting aerial cables from gunshot Investing in the future also means investing in our environment. Aramid fiber is an important part of the end products in the OFC value chains and as such our product contributes to both environmental burden and life cycle benefits. In some cases, we deliver a more durable product compared to alternative materials (E-glass, steel). In other occasions we enable new technology and designs leading towards space and energy reduction. Last but not least, we are making serious steps with our waste reduction program. We are able to deliver our customers tailor made lengths with a short delivery time. Finally, used aramid can be reclaimed and converted to recycled pulp for other applications. Aramids recycling business can provide support on recycling processes of used aramid.
