JOOLA for 55 years, table tennis at the highest level

In 1953, in the ski workshop of the company Jooss in Landau, the first JOOLA table tennis table was manufactured. Nobody could foresee what would arise within the next 55 years. As early as 1954 table tennis production became an independent department within Jooss that continuously expanded, however it would not be until 1961 that the German Championships would be played on JOOLA tables for the first time. From then success and change came swiftly. In Frankfurt-Hchst, 1963, the International German Championships were played on JOOLA tables for the first time. Production had to move to Landau-Godramstein. In 1972 a further move was required. The premises in Godramstein had become too small and as the city of Landau could not offer a suitable site, the winegrower village Siebeldingen won the tender. The present head office, which has been constantly expanded, was newly established. 1973 was a special year. JOOLA extended their range of products and introduced a clothing collection. Additionally, the first JOOLA blades and rubbers were developed. The first major table tennis brand selling a complete range around the celluloid ball had been generated. When in 1977 Peter Stellwag became German Champion with the JOOLA TURBO rubber and his legendary Stellwag GREEN SPOT blade, JOOLA had already established itself in the blade section. In 1984 JOOLA became equipment supplier to the ETTU European League. This commitment still continues today. The 1989 World Championships in Dortmund signalled a new era for table tennis in Germany. Jrg Rosskopf and Steffen Fetzner became World Champions in the mens doubles and to this day remain the only German World Champions. Everyone was talking about table tennis and the real boom began. The money for players escalated and professional table tennis evolved. Again JOOLA was at the forefront, as equipment supplier to the World Championships, the National Team and of course of to Rossi! Besides the delivery of tables, net and post sets and all other accessories, JOOLA developed the redcoloured table tennis flooring, which continues to be used at all table tennis events in cooperation with the German Table Tennis Association DTTB. In 1990, the most successful JOOLA rubber, SAMBA was born in the table tennis world. Today the sound and playing feel of the Samba is legendary.

Jrg Rosskopf became European Champion in the singles at the home European Championships in Stuttgart in 1992. Again JOOLA was there and provided the complete set of required equipment. In 1996 JOOLA was equipment supplier to the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Jrg Rosskopf won bronze in the singles and as the first German company, JOOLA started selling table tennis products in Japan. With JOOLAs development of the TANGO with TENSOR technology for more spin and speed, another story of success was established in 1998. In 1999 the branch JOOLA Hungary was founded in Kiskrs, which to this day delivers metal parts to the headquarters, and also successfully sells JOOLA products throughout Hungary. In 2000 JOOLA again was the preferred table supplier to the Olympic Games. In Sydney a show court, developed by JOOLA, was introduced for the first time. This remains the prototype for all show court versions. In 2003 the World Junior Championships took place in Chile. Again JOOLA was there. To this day, all World Junior Championships have been played on JOOLA tables with the theme With the future in mind. JOOLA Sponsoring

In Athens in 2004 for the 3rd time in a row JOOLA was equipment supplier to the Olympic Games and in 2005 JOOLA was equipment supplier for all major table tennis events in Europe: European Championships, European Youth Championships, World Cup, World Junior Championships and the European Veterans Championships. Spectators and players were enthusiastic about the new JOOLA show court at the World Cup and the Asian Games in Qatar in 2006. In 2007 JOOLA developed the Energy rubber and the associated Green Power technology for incorporated speed glue effect. In 2009 JOOLA was equipment supplier of the Asian Championships in India and one year later the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi were also played on JOOLA tables. The European Championships 2010 in Ostrava were not only the most successful European Championships of the German Table Tennis Association of all time, but also the television pictures with the JOOLA show court were a new milestone. Meanwhile, back at the Head Quarters in Siebeldingen, more expansion took place with a new warehouse being built. In 2011/2012 JOOLA remain ever active. The European Championships in Danzig, The World Junior Championships in Bahrain and the Europe Top 12 in Lyon will be great highlights and JOOLA, as it has for the past 55 years, will continue to set new standards with their ideas and products.

More than 50 years ago, in the ski workshop of the company Jooss in Landau, the first table top was painted with green blackboard varnish. The local carpenter delivered matching legs. Nobody knew what would arise from such a small beginning! In 1961, as a very young employee, along with the company founder Karl Frey, we took the tables in an estate car to the German Team Championships in Neuwied and set them up. The brand JOOLA was born. Back then the tables were still manufactured by hand, and that precision and quality has been maintained to the present day. It is not always easy to produce a playing surface that meets the highest demands. A lot of experience and expertise is necessary, and not surprisingly there is no German brand, apart from JOOLA, that has such a worldwide reputation in producing tables. The automatic coating equipment for the JOOLA table tops is unique. It was designed with one of the leading machinery manufacturers and is constantly updated to meet the most modern demands in quality. Top players throughout the world are complimentary about the legendary playing features of JOOLA tables. Nonetheless, this brings an obligation to maintain such high standards this of course has been the focus, of both myself and my employees, over our many successful years.

Setting trends!
In the seventies JOOLA presented the first specialist top class rubbers. JOOLA Turbo and JOOLA Stratos were rubbers of the highest level and in the following decades JOOLA developed rubbers, which many players used to win medals at World Championships, European Championships and Olympic Games. My responsibility for rubber development is not only for elite players but especially for the requirements of club, social and youth classes. These players need rubbers that both suit their individual playing style and give them fun in our loved sport. This requires a quality standard with a good priceperformance ratio, long durability and consistency. JOOLA rubber development involves testing by players from all standards. With Jrg Rosskopf, Germanys Mr. Table Tennis, I have a partner who as a former world class player and now as a successful coach contributes up to date expertise from the highest level. Material specialists like Chen Weixing and Amelie Solja, not only co-operate in the testing of equipment, but are actively involved in development and fine tuning of new products. The result? Top quality and popular rubbers for all playing standards. The development of rubbers is rapid. As vice president of the Hessian Table Tennis Association and sports manager of my home club TTC Seligenstadt (promoted to the 2nd Federal League) it means I have contact with players, coaches and officials at all levels of our sport - this naturally helps me to gauge the requirements of table tennis enthusiasts for the future.

JOOLA has made the decision to cease using the old numerical system of rubber rating. We believe that our new classification system is easier to understand and that an exact classification into very precise ratings is impossible and highly subjective. We will keep the traditional categories of playing features, but classification now has only 4 levels:

The blade is the soul of the racket...

My table tennis career has been long. Thirteen years of European and World Championships, Olympic Qualification with the Serbian National Team and twice national singles champion. I currently play in the 2nd German Federal League (and my balance isnt too bad). It has always been important for me to go to the table with perfect equipment. In respect of rubbers this has not been a problem, but finding the perfect blade, in my opinion the soul of the racket, has been much more difficult. Since 2004 I have been working in the department for design and development at JOOLA and during this time I have tested more than 3000 blades myself. It is a very long process from the idea to the start of production, and my experience and contacts with top players around the world, has been important in helping me design an ideal product. Regarding table tennis blades, JOOLA is the ideal partner for players throughout the world. Hard, fast carbon blades, new technologies like the flame and wing series, classic allround, defensive or junior blades, there is always a suitable JOOLA blade for every individual playing style. I am very happy with the present product range, but rest assured we are now working on the next development steps and Im looking forward to putting the next 3000 blades through their paces!

Since the early seventies JOOLA has provided a fresh and modern table tennis look. Collections have been developed in cooperation with designers throughout the world and, of course, with JOOLA top players. Since 2006 I have been responsible for the coordination of JOOLAs entire apparel range. One year in advance I task various designers with new product drafts, sort them and have samples produced. The samples are then assessed at JOOLA and opinions of customers and contract players are obtained. German champion Elke Schall has been closely involved in JOOLAs development and design work for two years. As a player Jrg Rosskopf was both European and World Cup Champion, winning the World Cup, two medals at the Olympic games, and numerous German Championships. For the past year he has been responsible for coaching the mens National Team. His protgs won all the titles at the European Championships in Ostrava, and at the World Championships in Rotterdam, the German players shone further with an excellent performance.
