Castle is an American comedy-drama police procedural television series on ABC which was created by Andrew W. Marlowe. It stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, a famous mystery novelist, and Stana Katic as NYPD detective Kate Beckett. The show premiered as a midseason replacement on March 9, 2009. ABC renewed Castle for a second season with an initial order of 13 episodes; ABC later extended the order to 22, then 24 episodes.[1][2] The second season premiered on Monday, September 21, 2009.[3] In March 2010, ABC renewed Castle for a third, 22 episode season, which began on September 20, 2010,[4] and was extended to 24 episodes.[5] The fourth season premiere aired on Monday, September 19, 2011.[6] On December 8, 2011, ABC ordered an additional episode bringing season 4 up to 23 episodes.[7] On May 10, 2012 the show was renewed for a fifth season,[8] which premiered on September 24, 2012, and was extended with an additional order of two episodes, bringing the total to 24 for the season.[9][10]

When a young woman is found dead under circumstances described exactly in a book written by acclaimed author Richard Castle, he is brought in to provide insight into the case. When more victims turn up in similarly-accurate conditions described in his books, Castle is enlisted to assist the investigation by applying his knowledge of criminal behavior and his own books to the department's considerable skills. It turns out that the killer is actually the brother of one of the victims, only killing the others because he wanted it to look like a crazy fan killed those people. When the detective who investigated Beckett's mother's murder is shot before her eyes before he can give her new evidence in the case, Beckett's old wounds are reopened. The investigation of the detective's death leads the team to a group of three corrupt cops who were kidnapping mobsters for ransom until they accidentally shot and killed an undercover FBI agent. They both know that she cannot kill him, so she threatens to release information obtained about him to the press should anything happen to her.
