English B30 Course Outline

Class Overview: English B30 is a course which focuses on the search for personal identity and finding ones place in the world. Focusing on international texts, we will discuss the importance of a strong sense of self and how society affects our view of who we are.

Expectations for: Exemptions In order to get an exemption from the final exam in this class, you must demonstrate the following: Punctuality: This is more than just showing up every day; come to class on time with the necessary materials, and be mentally present during the class. Behaviour: Exhibit a positive attitude, participate in class, and be respectful towards the opinions of others. Assignments: Turn in assignments, completed, and on time.

Classroom Behaviour The expectations for classroom behaviour have their foundation in one main area: respect. In other words, it is important for you to respect:

(a) your peers, by listening to them, respecting their opinions, and offering constructive criticism; (b) your teachers, by listening when they are speaking, participating in classroom discussions, and respecting the teachers time by handing in assignments on time; and, (c) yourself, by trying your best in class and on assignments to achieve to your best potential.

Unit II: The Social Experience Dealing with Universal Issues Ambition, Power, and the Common Good Social Criticism Addressing the Issues

Big Questions Who are you? What kind of identity do you want to establish in your life? How do you establish this identity? In what ways are we as individuals responsible for societal issues?

How do we walk the balance between conformity versus rebellion, individual versus society, and personal ambition versus common good?

Classroom Rules Food/Drink Food and gum will not be allowed in class. You may bring a bottle of water, but keep in mind that the classroom is a mess-free zone (this means cleaning up any spills that occur). Electronic Devices As is the school policy, electronic devices will not be used except for in the electronic zone by the cafeteria. However, if electronic devices will be needed, students will be notified at least one class prior. Arriving Late Teachers will allow students 3 minutes to transition from class to class. After 3 minutes, teachers will be encouraged to close their door at the second bell. Any student arriving after the second bell will be recorded as Late. If you are late, you are to knock on the door and wait there until you are asked to come in and join the class. RTI (Response to Intervention)
