About Manchester Metropolitan University

A message from Professor Pete Dunleavy

Dean of Science and Engineering/ Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Manchester Metropolitan University

Manchester Metropolitan University was awarded university status in 1992 and is part of the largest higher education campus in the UK and one of the most extensive education centres in Europe. With a history dating back 150 years, it has a combination of the traditional and the contemporary that sets MMU apart and gives its distinct character. Manchester Metropolitan University is the largest campus-based undergraduate university in the UK with a total student population of more than 37,000. Its claim is to be the University for World Class professionals with an emphasis on vocational education and employability. The University was initially developed as a centre of Technology, Art and Design from Manchester Mechanics Institution (1824) and Manchester School of Design (1838). Later Schools of Commerce (founded 1889), Education (f. 1878) and Domestic Science (f. 1880) were added along with colleges at Didsbury, Crewe, Alsager and the former Domestic and Trades College (f. 1911), latterly Hollings College. The painter L. S. Lowry attended the art school in the years after the First World War where he was taught by the noted impressionist Adolphe Valette. The University is arranged into eight faculties, each providing specialist learning, teaching and research hubs for students at undergraduate, postgraduate and professional development.

It is my pleasure to introduce a new study option for future Engineers to obtain a British degree at PSB Academy. Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has developed a portfolio of mechanical and electrical engineering courses to provide you with the knowledge and skills to work in the exciting global industry of Engineering. We have also created a system of flexibility that will allow you to complete your MMU degree locally, here at PSB Academy, or be able to join the later stages of the course in Manchester, one of the UKs most popular study destinations. Our University shares the same vision and ambition as PSB Academy to ensure that students who study these courses receive the hands-on training that are both challenging to students and prized by employers. The well-equipped electrical and mechanical labs at PSB Academy will enable students to make applied use of the skills they develop while studying an MMU Bachelors of Engineering degree. We expect that you will find these courses academically challenging as well as professionally rewarding. I would like to wish you success in your academic and professional aspirations.

Year 2 Level 5 Advanced Mechanical Science Learn how to analyse the behaviour of thermodynamic and structural systems. Study how stresses occur in cylinders, how heat is transferred through a system and how air condition systems operate. Management and Professional Skills Introduces the key issues in world class performance. The constraints upon enterprises will be explored. Finally, the student will identify individual strategies for career progression. Vibration and Control Study how motion can be modelled and controlled through passive and active control systems. The unit is key for understanding how movement in engineering structures can result in failure, discomfort and health problems. Design and Modelling Mechanical design elements: bearings, gears, chains, belts, brakes, clutches, etc. Manufacturing techniques. Engineering drawing: 3-D modelling and orthographic projection.

Year 3 Level 6 Design Use a variety of technical information to create a complete design of complex product. Ensure fitness for purpose by applying design. Project A self-directed project requiring in-depth research/ analysis/ experimentation/ design into a relevant topic of the students own choice. A written report and verbal examination of the project and its outcomes. Stress and Structural Analysis Use industry standard software and advanced techniques to analyse the behaviour of a range of structural engineering problems. Learn how to interrogate and validate results, implement design changes and work to British standards. Dynamics and Fluids Develops knowledge and understanding of appropriate scientific principles and techniques for solving problems in the fields of Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics.

General Information Private Education Act

Under the EduTrust Certification Scheme, we have adopted the Fee Protection Scheme with CPE-appointed service providers and provide medical insurance coverage for hospitalisation and related medical treatment for the entire programme duration.

Fee Protection Scheme (FPS)

PSB Academy has put in place an insurance arrangement to ensure that fees paid by students to the school are insured by a CPE-appointed service provider. This insurance protection serves to protect the students fees in the event a private education institution (PEI) is unable to continue operations due to insolvency, and/or regulatory closure. Furthermore, the FPS protects the student if the PEI fails to pay penalties or return fees to the student arising from judgements made against it by the Singapore courts. The FPS is compulsory for all local and international students taking programmes in PEIs seeking EduTrust certification. FPS is applicable to all programmes with a programme duration of more than one month or 50 hours. Students enrolled in the programmes will be required to pay fees for FPS which varies depending on the insured programme fees.

Medical Insurance
PSB Academy provides group hospital and surgical insurance to all its students (except those specifically allowed to opt out under EduTrust Certification guidelines). This insurance is an expense reimbursement plan with an annual limit of up to S$20,000 per year that helps to reduce the financial burden of the insured student in the event that he/she needs to be hospitalised in a government or restructured hospital. Fees payable for the entire duration of the programme is indicated in the fees schedule of the student contract. Singaporean/PR and non-Students Pass international students who are already covered by their own medical insurance plan (annual limit not less than S$20,000) may be exempted from the plan provided by PSB Academy. Those undertaking full-time programmes must produce their medical insurance policy for verification should they want to opt out. You must opt out by declaring in the PEI-Student contract or as an addendum to the same contract. For more information, please refer to psb-academy.edu.sg/prospects-general-info
