Partial Discharge Pattern Analysis (PRPDA)

Electron generation and streamer process - keys to PD classification
Displaying PD data as "Phase Resolved Partial Discharge" (PRPD) patterns was introduced in the late 80's and quickly became a standard in interpreting and analysing PD data. The method is based on the physical electron generation and streamer propagation processes in gaseous dielectrics.

The key to PD pattern analysis is understanding the physical nature of ionization and recombination of gas molecules in the electric field considering the surrounding geometry and material parameters. Each parameter involved has an impact on the statistical behaviour of the PD. Taken together, pulses of a certain fault type form one or multiple clusters with a characteristic shape. Identifying the type and quantity of shapes enables the confirmation and classification of the source of the PD signal. However, although skilled engineers can nowadays do the job of classification quite well, to date, commercially available PD testing and monitoring equipment has not been supplied with suitable and reliable analysis software. PRPDA's unique technology called PDScrypt allows classification based on expert rule sets derived from physical processes and considers both cluster shapes and pulse statistics using fuzzy logic. The expert system user interface called PDExplorer provides a probability sorted list of potential root causes for each identified signal.
