CourseDescription
The Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory course enables highly motivated students to engage in college level work in the areas of reading and analyzing notated music and aural training. Particular emphasis will be placed upon developing listening skills, sightsinging ability, and knowledge of rhythm, melody, harmony, and other compositional devices. The successful student will be endowed with the skills necessary to function intelligently in any musical situation. The work of the course willemphasizepreparationfortheadvancedplacementmusictheoryexamination.
MajorInstructionalGoals
The ultimate goal of the AP Music Theory course is to develop a students ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music thatareheardorpresentedinascore.Theachievementofthisgoalmaybebestpromotedbyintegratedapproachestothestudentsdevelopmentof: AuralSkillsthroughlisteningexercises Sightsingingskillsthroughperformanceexercises Writtenskillsthroughwrittenexercises Compositionalskillsthroughcreativeexercises Analyticalskillsthroughanalyticalexercises
Grading
Participation=40%(activeparticipation,punctualityandattentiveness,beingpreparedforclass) Tests/Quizzes=25%(announced/unannouncedquizzes,written/performanceexams,finalexam) Assignments=40%(classwork,homework,projects,papers) TheFinalExamisacompositionprojectthatwillrequireeachstudenttoarrangeamusicalpieceandapplyallofthetechniquesandskillsacquiredwithintheAP MusicTheoryClass.Thisassignmentwillbe10%ofthe25%fromTestsandQuizzes. LateWorkProjectsandpaperswillbeacceptedlate,butwillbedocked10%forthefirstdayand50%afterthat. MakeUpWorkItisYOURresponsibilitytofindoutwhatyoumissedwhenyouwereabsent.Homeworkisdue2classesafterthedateoftheabsence.Allexamsmissed duetoexcusedabsencesmustbemadeupwithinaweekofthedateoftheabsence. Manyofourinclassassignmentsandhomeworkwillbedrillandpracticetypesofassignmentsofferedtohelpyoumasternewskills.Thesewillbegradedona pass/failtypeofpointsystem.Otherassignmentsandtestswillbestandardassessmentstyleassignmentsgiventomeasureyourlevelofmastery.Thesewillbegraded usingalettergradeonastandardpercentagepointscale.

APMusicTheoryExam
ThiscourseisdesignedtoprepareyoufortheAPMusicTheoryExaminMayof2010.TakingtheAPtestisnotrequired,althoughitisHIGHLYrecommended. TheAPExaminationinMusicTheoryassessesthestudentsunderstandingofmusicalstructureandcompositionalproceduresthroughrecordedandnotatedexamples. Theexamgivesstrongemphasisisgiventolisteningskills,particularlythoseinvolvingrecognitionandcomprehensionofmelodicandrhythmicpatterns,harmonic functions,smallforms,andcompositionaltechnique.Mostofthemusicalexamplesaretakenfromstandardrepertoire.Theexaminationassumesfluencyinreading musicalnotationandastronggroundinginmusicfundamentals,terminology,andanalysis. TheAPMusicTheoryExamisabout3hourslongandconsistsofthreesections.SectionIconsistsof75multiplechoicequestions,someofwhicharebasedonaural stimulus.SectionIIconsistsofwrittenfreeresponsequestions.SectionIIIcontainstwosightsingingexercises.
AttendanceandDiscipline
AttendanceProcedureParentsshouldnotifytheattendanceoffice(5238916or5238915)eachdaythestudentisabsent.Astudentnotexcusedfromschoolbya parent/guardianwillbeconsideredtruant.Workmissedbecauseoftruancymaynotbecompletedforcredit. HomeworkandMakeUpWorkGuidelinesItisthestudentsresponsibilitytochecktheteacherastoworkmissedduringtheabsenceandproceduretofollow.Should thestudentchoosenottocontacttheteacherwithinfiveschooldaysandmakearrangementsforworkmissed,theteacherisabsolvedofanyresponsibilityforthe studentsnegligenceinthismatterandwillrecordagradeofFor0foreachoftheassignmentsmissedduringtheabsence.
