No. 1 Properties of a Liquid Prepared by: SALAPONG, MARK FERNAND A. CE 4C Date Performed: JULY 19, 2013 Score:_____ __________________________________________________________________________________________ I. OBJECTIVES

To measure the properties of evaporated milk such as density, specific weight, and specific gravity.

II.

THEORY

The density of a fluid is defined as the mass per unit volume. In formula it is expressed as:

m V

The specific weight (unit weight) of a fluid is defined as the weight per unit volume. In formula, it is expressed as:

W V

The specific gravity (relative density) of a fluid is the ratio of the density of the fluid to some standard density. In formula, it is expressed as:

SG =

PROCEDURE
Weigh the empty graduated cylinder. Read and record the weight. Fill the graduated cylinder with the liquid up to its desired neck level. Read and record the volume of the liquid. Weigh the graduated cylinder with the liquid in it. Read and record the weight. Perform two trials of the experiment.

DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION

DISCUSSION:
The density of a liquid is a measure of how matter is squeezed together in a given amount of space, liquids have different densities and a dense substance will sink in a liquid which is less dense. The specific weight represents the force exerted by gravity on a unit volume of a liquid. For this reason, units are expressed as force per unit volume (e.g., lb/ft 3 or N/m3). The specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a given reference material. In the experiment we use the water as the reference material to determine the specific gravity of the evaporated milk; this shows how many times the density of evaporated milk to the density of water.

CONCLUSION: 2

Density is constant for the same liquid having a different value of volume and mass. For example, if you were to pour 50 mL of evaporated milk into one graduated cylinder and 100 mL into another, they would both have the same density - the 50 mL graduated cylinder has half the volume of evaporated milk, but will also have half the mass of 100 mL of evaporated milk. Therefore, when changing the volume of a given liquid it doesnt means that the density is also changing. Furthermore, If the density of the liquid is constant its specific weight and specific gravity is also constant in any proportion of mass and volume.
