SIX SIGMA AND 5S METHOD

INTRODUCTION Every company, enterprise or a business organization wants to be at the level of the commerce, national and international. For that they need to use strategies and methods that improves the performance in the manunfacturing processes or in the development of a product. This activity involves not only the machinery and tools used for the job, also the attitude of the personal in charge of the operations. Six Sigma is a business strategy that focus in the reduction of the variability of a product or process, minimizing defects. The company obtains the best quality based on what the costumers needed. This strategy relies in principles that mostly interfer with the intelectual capabilities of the workers and identifying and defining a problem to solve it or in the release of a new product to the market. Another important factor is the organization at workspace, that refers to the order and cleaning of all the areas where an activity will be done making effective and efficient the tasks eliminating waste and improving the quality in the management of data, equipment and human resources. To accomplish this companies support in the 5S method that covers this aspects.

OBJECTIVES

GENERAL OBJECTIVE To know about the 5S method and Six Sigma strategy used by the business organizations to improve the production in the process and manufacturing of a product.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES To define the application of the Six Sigma principles aimed to the workers mainly. To study the objectives of the 5S methods and how they interfere with the effectiveness and efficiency for a well-done task or process. To identify the difference between DMAIC and DMADV methods of the Six Sigma strategy.

SIX SIGMA Six Sigma is a business management strategy, it uses a methodology to get the better perfomance in manufacturing processes that is widely used in many sectors of industry. Focused in the reduction of variability on products and improve the quality of process outputs by identifying and removing or minimizing defects or errors in the delivery of a product or in costumers service. The term Six Sigma originated from terminology of standard deviation, that gives an idea of how variable a process is. The goal of Six Sigma is to reduce this variability to allways be in the boundaries of the customers needs. SIXSIGMA PRINCIPLES 1. Commited leadership from the top down: The strategy supports from the highest levels of management and organization 2. Full-time staff: Creating a management structure that includes leaders in business, projects, experts and facilitators everyone with ther own roles and responsabilities. 3. Training: Every member require an specific training. 4. Accreditation 5. Oriented to the customer and focused on processes: Based on the study of the custumers needs seeking that all the processes accomplish with the qualitity and perfomance levels with the standards the costumers requirements. 6. Managed with data. Data is necessary to identify the quality variables and the processes or areas that need to be improved. 7. Relies on a robust methodology Trough the analysis and treatment of data obtained. 8. The projects generate savings or increased sales 9. Work is recognized 10. The Six Sigma methodology propose large projects 11. Seis Sigma communicates Six Sigmas programs based in an intense communication politic between all its members and departments of the organization and outside of this. SIX SIGMA PROCESS These methodologies, composed of five phases each, bear the acronyms DMAIC and DMADV. DMAIC is used for projects aimed at improving an existing business process. DMADV is used for projects aimed at creating new product or process designs.

DMAIC Has five phases: Define the problem, the customers needs, and the project goals. Measure key aspects of the current process and collect relevant data.

Analyze the data to investigate and verify cause-and-effect relationships. Determine what the relationships are, and attempt to ensure that all factors have been considered. Seek out root cause of the defect under investigation. Improve or optimize the current process based upon data analysis using techniques. Control the future state process to ensure that any deviations from target are corrected before they result in defects. Continuously monitor the process.

DMADV or DFSS Also known as DFSS ("Design For Six Sigma"), features five phases: Define design goals that are consistent with customer demands and the enterprise strategy. Measure and identify product capabilities, production process capability, and risks. Analyze to develop and design alternatives, create a high-level design and evaluate design capability to select the best design. Design details, optimize the design, and plan for design verification. This phase may require simulations. Verify the design, set up pilot runs, implement the production process and present the final product to the process owner(s). 5S METHOD A workplace organization methodology that describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. There are 5 primary phases of 5S: sorting, straightening, systematic cleaning, standardizing, and sustaining. Sorting (Seiri) Eliminate all unnecessary tools, parts, and instructions. Go through all tools, materials, and so forth in the plant and work area. Keep only essential items and eliminate what is not required, prioritizing things per requirements and keeping them in easily-accessible places. Everything else is stored or discarded. Stabilizing or Straightening Out (Seiton) There should be a place for everything and everything should be in its place. The place for each item should be clearly labeled or demarcated. Items should be arranged in a manner that promotes efficient work flow, with equipment used most often being the most easily accessible. Each tool, should be kept close to where it will be used. Sweeping or Shining (Seiso) Clean the workspace and all equipment, and keep it clean, tidy and organized. This makes it easy to know where things go and ensures that everything is where it belongs.

Standardizing (Seiketsu) All work stations for a particular job should be identical. All employees doing the same job should be able to work in any station that should be equiped with the same tools. Sustaining the Practice (Shitsuke) Maintain and review standards. Once changes have been established, they become the new way to operate. Maintain focus in this new way and improve it gradually when it be necessary.

OBJECTIVES OF 5S METHOD: Items well-organized for improve productivity The employees avoid wasting their time looking for the items required to accomplish an activity. Have the often-needed items in an accessiible location and the standardizations of the work stations to return the items at the correct location. Improved plant maintenance making workers responsibles for keeping it clean and tidy. Eliminate the dirt caused by the nature of a process, the place where the process be done, the movement of parts or through the use of tools and machinery reducing the impact in product performance. Improved health and safety, maintaining the facilities clean and tidy, with well-organized and quality control in all work areas. Improving the layout of the facility as well as the status of plant with the concept of visual management removing complex tracking and communication systems. Use the 5S as a valuable sales tool with all the aspects mentioned before to give a message to the customers of a professioinal and well-organized supplier when potential customers visit the facilities.

CONCLUSIONS Six Sigma is a business management strategy that focuses in the reduction of the variability of a product eliminating defects and errors creating the best performance in production and customer service. The benefits of the 5S method are the order and organization created at workspace following the steps to do that, improving the job of all companys staff in the areas needed. The Six Sigma principles implement a control with management and collection of data improving in workers attitude to increase the production. The successful implementation of 5S requires that everyone understand why it is being used and what the expected results are for accomplish the goals of this method. DMAIC is aimed at improving an existing business process. And DMADV is aimed at creating new products or process designs.
