How to connect Windows XP to 7 through LAN using an RJ45 connector cable..?

Connect both computers with cable. I On XP Machine: Go to Start -> Connect to -> RMB on Local area connection -> Properties -> Select Internet Protocol -> Properties -> Use the following IP addres IP Address: 198.168.0.1 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.1 Default gateway: 198.168.0.1 ->Use the following DNS server address: Prefered DNS server: 198.168.0.1 RMB on any folder -> Properties -> Sharing -> Click on something in the second panel with blue color font to enable folder sharing ->Select any folder ->Propeties -> Sharing >Share this folder on network.

II On Win7 Machine: Go to lan connection -> Properties -> Internet Protocol version IPv4 -> Properties -> Use the following IP addres IP Address: 198.168.0.2 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.1 Default gateway: 198.168.0.1 ->Use the following DNS server address: Prefered DNS server: 198.168.0.1 RMB on any folder and share it with Guest.

Note - for multiple computers(using a switch or a hub) , while configuring network IP addresses,on third position write the significant numbers 3,4,5,etc. Example - For third computer ,in the IP address field, write 192.168.0.3 and other fields should be kept same. III After that, go to XP Machine, and leave only IP Address and Subnet mask fields filled, rest delete, otherwise internet wont work. IV Internet If you want internet to work, RMB on Wireless Network Connection -> Advanced tab and check option Allow other network users to connect through. And then on Win7 on the Local Area Connection switch back to Obtain IP address automaticly and Obtain DNS server automaticly.

Note If you want (in the same session) to turn off internet access to Win7 machine, switch it back (under local area connection) to custom filled ip address and dns servers and define them like in step II. Note Repeat steps from I-III whenever you restart or turn off XP or Win7 machine.

Appendix I I Remote Assistance: On WinXP Machine: RMB on My Computer -> Remote Tab -> Allow users to connect remotely Then Start -> Run -> Type regedit -> Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Serve. Double click on TSAdvertise and change value from 0 to 1.If that doesn work try following: Start -> Run -> Type gpedit.msc -> Navigate to Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options. Double click on Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only. And Disable it. On Win7 Machine: RMB on Computer and check the options in the Remote Settings called Alo Allow users to connect remotely Then My Computer, in the left pane collapse Network, RMB on LASTXP and choose remote connection.

II To set up a Remote Connection on WinXP Machine: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories - > Remote Desktop Connection. Dont go directly to Computer combobox because you cant make it. Instead click Options. Type in the name of the computer you want to connect to and its user name(UN can be found in the OS DRIVE:Users) and check the save my credentials option. Go to Experience tab and choose under the Performance panel LAN (10 Mbps or higher). Click Connect and it should work now.
