Its crazy around here! Im going insane! Well, it is a little crazy around here, but I want to help with the insane part. This fall our theme is Beyond Insanity. I hope to show you the way out. Heres a quick overview of the messages from now until Christmas: First, we have to define what insanity is and what it looks like. You cant escape it if you cant recognize it. Then we will look at how your insanity shapes your identity. Well call that series Identity Theft. The next move will be to show the connection between trust (or the lack of trust) and sanity. And then the final series will be Escaping the Cuckoos Nest and will uncover the pieces that protect us from going insane. It should make for some fun teaching and I know it will have some truth that can make your life a whole lot better. Speaking of crazy (hows that for a transition?), we have some major changes in our staff that will be taking place this fall. I put off writing this as long as I could, hoping I would have some news to announce, but as of this moment we are searching for both a Worship Minister and a Student Minister. I am thankful that we have strong volunteers to lean on in each of those areas. I hope you are praying with us, so that we can find a fitjust the person who can lead in each of those crucial roles. As long as we are on the subject of staff changes, Lindsay Kimmel begins this week as our Financial Secretary. We are excited about adding Lindsay to the team. One more crazy place to go: Its normal for a church to fall considerably short of their goal in a capi-
WORD
tal campaign. The num- randy@firstcapitalchristian.org bers Ive seen say often Randy Kirk churches only see 80-85% Senior Minister of the campaign actually come in. But you know if First Capital is anything, we arent normal! We know normal doesnt work; we are intentionally weird! I know what Im about to say is crazy but just hear me out. Joe Myers challenged us to Drive for 75, to have 75% of our goal in by December of this year. That would leave 25% for the last year of the 30,000 Reasons campaign. But I would like to up the ante. As a testimony to just how weird we really are, what if we made in 2 years what normal churches do in a whole campaign? Could we get to 80% by the end of this year? The answer is Yes. But to do that everyone will have to step up; those who made commitments will have to do their part; but even more importantly, those who didnt will have to join in and come along side. Let me just lay this crazy idea out there; lets see what youand God want to do with it. One more (I know I already said that): It would be really helpful if some who come to the 10:45 would adjust and come to one of the other services. And it would be helpful if those who can would park on the gravel and leave the better parking for guests and those who need to be close. And one more, it would really help if you would give the aisle seat, and the back rows for guests. I know, I just went to meddling Love you guys!

who actually became the first new member of NorthPointe Christian Church. Operation Stand Down assists homeless veterans in Rhode Island in finding permanent housing. During our first few days in Rhode Island, our team spent our afternoons doing Vince Garmon some light landscaping Connections Minister and helping beautify an apartment complex just outside Providence that is home to several of the veterans and their families that the organization has helped. It was a real privilege meeting some of these men and having the opportunity to thank them for their service to our country. But our trip was DEFINITELY not all work, no play. We had some tremendous opportunities while we were in New England to catch the sights and enjoy the culture and food of this very historic part of our country! We took in the seaside cliffs and the smell of the salty air in Newport, RI; we took a fun, albeit rainy, trip to Boston, and also sampled foods like New England clam chowder, clam cakes, Boston cream pie, hot wieners, AND coffee milk the OFFICIAL state beverage of Rhode Island. Thanks, everyone, for the prayers you offered up for our trip this summer It encouraged the believers at NorthPointe, and it expanded the comfort zones, in one way or another, of all of us who went! I cant even begin to put into words how grateful I am for my 4+ years serving at First Capital. I came here as a 21-year old student pastor with a desire to connect students to God, each other and adult leaders who truly care about the next generation. I have countless amazing memories, many treasured friendships and I have received tremendous encouragement over the past hour confirming that God used my family here in Corydon to make an impact. From watching tons of students walk over from school to QUEST every Wednesday, to doing life with leaders that believe students can make a difference, to busting out the seams of every space weve met in, to seeing our own students become Kingdom Workers these past several years have been incredible for me and I will never forget them. I have accepted the position to lead the Next Generation team at the new Southeast Christian Church campus in Southwest Louisville. Which means starting on Sept 2, I will no longer be working at First Capital. This new journey for Mindy and I is both exciting and scarybut we know it is right. Its not a decision we have made hastily but have searched intently our hearts and scripture and have been praying about for the past several months. Just to be perfectly clear, because I know how rumors can run wild in this sort of thing, I want you to know that I have no hard feelings or disagreements with First Capital or the leadership. In fact, I love Randy and the rest
I dont know about you, but fall has always been an exciting time for our family. Ty started it by playing football, and Tessa and Will have continued that on by being involved in cheerleading and football as well. It is a very busy time for everyone. School is back in session and summer is coming to an end. We wrap up that to do list Jesse Barnett and set it back into the Childrens closet until the next year, Minister or at least that is what I do. Tessa and I were so amazed at what God did on our mission trip to Rhode Island. We had not been back there since Ty was married on the beach. We got to worship with kids and reach out to them in Gods love and compassion. The team did an amazing job. I got to spend time with people I had not really had the chance to get to know. With the coming of fall, programs begin to kick off full swing here at First Capital. There are so many exciting things coming up and it seems like the planning processes for them are going into full swing. We are seeing a huge spike in our numbers across the board and the need for volunteers continues to grow. Our major needs areas are the following: Wednesday Night Nursery (Once a month) Wednesday Night Preschool (Once a month) Wednesday Night Upstreet (Bi-monthly) Saturday Night/helper preschool with Mary Ann Kirk (Once a Month) Saturday night Upstreet (Once a month) Preschool once a month 1st and 2nd services (Helper) Upstreet Elementary 1st and 2nd service (Bi-Monthly) If you can serve in any of these areas, please contact me. Remember the kids are our now!! There will be no future without the NOW!!! We have some exciting things coming in the Upstreet and Sprouts programming. In September, the Upstreet gang is going to Phobia Island as we discuss courage. We will be using the stories of Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Caleb and Abraham to teach the kids about overcoming their fears. In October, we will be discussing the Road to Glory and how Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. David will be the focus for the entire month. The Sprouts will be going on a Road Trip and learning about Joseph and how God used him and took him to

It sure feels like fall here in the middle of August as I write this. That can only mean one thing:
Our biggest Outreach event is just around the corner and we need EVERYONE (hunters included) to pitch in. Though there will be some changes this year with different booths and events, we still need as close to 100% participation as possible. For those new to this event, this will be the 4th time for this FREE event that has drawn in around 3000 or more people each year. We have a familyfriendly fun day that includes games, music, food, and informational booths. Last year we had over 200 volunteers. This year I would like to see twice that many. Our goal is to have a schedule for every position to be filled and have at least one shift change during the day, preferably two. The simple and abbreviated list of service areas include: set up, games, booths, praise and worship, food (we need both people to help the day of the event and people to make desserts), shuttle rides, distribution (candy, prizes, information, water and supplies), collection (garbage during the event), and tear down/clean up, plus probably a dozen things I am forgetting at the moment. Life groups are instrumental to this event, but everyone is encouraged to participate in some way. Look for signup sheets in the lobby, as well as candy collection bins (last year we filled a full sized pickup with candygave every bit of it away).
FDOTS is by far and away the largest event held on the Square. It is an awesome opportunity to show Gods love to the 30,000 we are trying to reach, Volunteers are requested to wear our 30,000 Reasons shirts, and those will be available to order at the ReSource Center. Please keep this event in prayer. Pray not only for good weather but for how God will use you to touch someones life. In closing, a recap of July and August: Free swimming every Friday in JulyFun in the Son. Cool weather but an even cooler event. We averaged around 100 folks every Friday at the public pool. Fun was had by all and we were able to plant a seed in many people who were surprised a church would do something like this. Special thanks to Chuck and Lorilla for weekly devotionals for the group. Next, Outdoor Expo 2013Delbert and his team did an outstanding job - over 400 people attended. Look for his article about that and other upcoming Outdoor Ministry events. Thank you to all who helped and/or attended these events Finally, please continue to pray for the Henderson/ Arnold families, and others who were affected by their tragic deaths. Gary Henderson provided the pony rides for FDOTS and the carriage rides for Joy Prom. The media portrayal of Gary as a genuinely nice man is an understatement. He loved our events and contributed tremendously to them. Gary, you will truly be missed. Bill Hollingsworth Outreach Lay Director
The Outdoor Expo has come and gone again. We had approximately 400 people this year watching Eddie Salter use box calls, slate calls, and mouth calls to make turkey sounds! Marvin Reynolds also gave a presentation this year! If you havent seen the pictures of the stage, you should ask to see them! It looked awesome! We even had duck decoys in the baptistry. If you would like to help out with any future events, please contact Bill Hollingsworth or Delbert Smith. Kill It and Grill It will be Jan 30th 2014. Our special guests will be James and Chad Hampton of Huntin The Truth Ministries. More details coming soon!

Well, the fall walks are coming up quickly! The mens walk is October 10th 13th and the womens walk is the following weekend, October 17th 20th. We still have lots of room for pilgrims on both walks, please prayerfully consider who you know that you might sponsor. Which leads me to the topic of Sponsorship Training To provide the best experience for pilgrims, we will be requiring everyone who wants to sponsor a pilgrim to go through a short (20-30 minute), ONE TIME training session. And yes, even if you have sponsored pilgrims before, even if you have been doing so for years, you will have to this. Consider it an act of agape. Training is not required to sponsor someone on the fall walks, but will be required for the spring walks. Our intent is to offer it at most, if not all gatherings and there will be dates (to be announced) where it will be available here at First Capital. We will be doing this presentation as part of the followup for the fall
walks. We now has a database that future lay directors will be using to assist in team selection. Whatever was on your last service sheet is the information that was put into the database, so if you have had any changes since then, especially phone numbers or email addresses, we need to know. If you get the information to me, I will make sure that it gets updated. Send to bdhollingsworth@portative. net. There is a gathering on Friday, September 6th at Sellersburg United Methodist Church at 7:27 pm. Please bring a snack and a 2-liter to share. Hope to see you there!!! Could it be a wave of the future? Quite possibly. First Capitals fall programming shoots out of the gate on the Wednesday following Labor Day (September 4) with the premiere of Table Groups. Table groups combine the Depth of a Bible study with the fellowship of a life group, and the familiarity of a Sunday School class. Heres how its going to work: Adults, ages 18 and over will meet in our Life Center at 6:40 PM each Wednesday evening for a 10-minute summary of the past weekends message. At 6:55, we will have a 5-minute passing period from the Life Center to our adult education area, where 8 to 10 person round tables will be set up to accommodate guests by life season. We will have tables for single women, younger and older married couples, single men, etc. From 7 to 8 PM, we will engage in conversation with each other not only about the weekend message and how we can apply it, but also discussion about whats going on in life, and, more importantly, how we can pray for one another. For some, it may be the most engaging hour of the entire week. We invite you to come try Table Groups! Call Vince Garmon at the church if you have any questions, or need more information.
Table Groups
Talk around is about the Father/Son Campout in September. Remember that this is for all ages. Anyone can come. Grandfather and grandson? You betcha. Even if you want to grab a kid off of the street and bring them, please do so. We will have plenty to do. The Outdoor Ministry will be there to help teach fly tying and fishing, the Boy Scouts will be there to help show proper setup of a campsite and they will also help setup the camp fire. Remember to bring your own grub to cook out over the fire. This is cavemen attire and nothing will be provided. The cost is only $5.00 per tent, which will help cover the cost of the campsite. See you there, unless youre chicken.
