Chaplain’s Corner

T he beginning of semester two was an active time for the FACE (Faith
through Action in Community for Everyone) student team. Students
worked hard at the process of selecting a charity to support for our school’s
Lent Campaign.
The resulting decision was to support the rebuilding efforts of the Diocese of
Torit in Southern Sudan. After more than 20 years of civil war, the area is now in a state of fragile
peace.
Ash Wednesday was a special day at St. Mary’s for a couple of reasons. We had a liturgy and
distribution of ashes with all students and staff to mark the beginning of lent. We were blessed to
have Fr. Nicholas Mauro Iko as the celebrant of this liturgy. Fr. Nicholas, who is originally from
Southern Sudan and currently working at a
parish near Windsor, agreed to come and talk
to us about the situation in his homeland. He
brought with him 3 friends, also originally
from Southern Sudan and now living in Lon-
don. They shared with us some of the history
and what it is like now. It was a wonderful
learning experience.
Throughout Lent we prayed for the people of
Southern Sudan. A collection of cash dona-
tions was made in homerooms every Wednes-
day and Friday of Lent. FACE team members
made posters and a PowerPoint slide show
was put together to run on the forum screen.
The total collected during Lent was over
$2100. Congratulations Warriors!
The rebuilding efforts include creating and supporting education. Our donation will be di-
rected toward a girl’s secondary school named St. Bahkita.
I had an opportunity to spend a morning with grade 7 & 8 students at St. Jude, Ingersoll and
St. Joseph, Thamesford elementary schools. I conducted a presentation covering some very important
topics: Pro-Life Issues and Chastity. The students were great and we had some very good discus-
sions. It was a good opportunity to connect with some of our future St. Mary’s students.
Reconciliation was celebrated on March 10th with priests from Sacred Heart, Holy Trinity and
St. Mary’s Parishes. About 100 students came to the library that day to participate in this very impor-
tant sacrament.
On Holy Thursday, Mrs. V. Thompson and about 15 dedicated students gave us a fantastic
experience. They put together a dramatic presentation that was done without words and with only
music in the background. They told the story from the Last Supper up to when the rock was rolled
away from the tomb. Both staff and students were amazed at the effect of this presentation.
We are planning a trip to Ottawa for the National March for Life and a pro-life youth confer-
ence. We are leaving Wednesday May 13 around 11:00am and returning late Friday May 15. If you
have a student who is interested please have them contact Mrs. Clarke at school as soon as possible.
Peace,
Ann Clarke

Guidance News
Graduation will be held on Thursday June 25, 2009 at 7 pm at St. Mary’s High School. A
reception will follow the ceremony at Goff Hall.
The graduating class has met with Guidance and are presently fulfilling their obligations ( 40
hours of community involvement) must be submitted to Guidance by May 1, 2009. At St.
Mary’s, graduation is a formal affair. A graduation fee of $50.00 helps cover the cost of graduation includ-
ing gown rental, souvenir cap with 2009 tassel, invitations, programs and celebration expenses Due to lim-
ited seating capacity of the gymnasium, each grad is entitled three tickets for guests. The tickets will be
issued in early June and are for guest only. The grads themselves do not require a ticket. To our potential
grads, blessings on your future, whether it be in the world of work or in further study. We hope you are
proud of your secondary school education and the St. Mary’s High School Community. We are very Proud
of you.

Arts Department
The Arts department has already had a busy start to Semester Two. James Roy, Michael Castellucci, and
Katie Cinel, all seniors in the visual arts, had their work showcased recently at Museum London. Their
work was chosen among student work from across the board. Way to go Warriors!
Drama students participated in Sears Festival which was held at the Lighthouse Theatre in Port Dover in
February. The show was written and directed by three senior drama students: congratulations to Dan-
ielle Poirier, Kristen Allison, and Victoria Prouse on a job very well done. Huang Dao Dai is based on
the folklore behind the Chinese Zodiac. Kudos to all of the students involved on their
hard work and dedication to the show. We also participated in TheatreFest – a board
wide showcase of student work where St. Mary’s students once again represented our
school with class.
Chicago, Chicago! The Jazz and Concert bands have been rehearsing steadily and are
getting excited to head to Chicago on April 24th to 27th . We wish Ms. Cybulski and the
band the best of luck. We know you’ll make us proud!
Upcoming in the Arts Department is our annual Arts Fest. This year, Arts Fest will be
held on Thursday May 7th and will incorporate visual, media, and dramatic arts, as well as live entertain-
ment from our bands and individual students. More details will follow so be sure to contact the school
for ticket information!!
Also, stay tuned for more details about…Footloose!!! Auditions for next year’s production of Foot-
loose will be held in May for any interested students. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Department of Religious Studies
In the Department of Religious Studies, courses continue to progress into the second term of the semester.
The provincial theme of this year’s Catholic Education Week (May 3rd - 8th) is “Good News for All.” This theme
comes from two biblical passages in the Book of Isaiah (“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the mes-
senger who announces peace, who brings good news!”) and in Paul’s Letter to the Romans (“How beautiful are the
feet of those who bring good news!”). As Catholic educators who are responsible for teaching our faith, we recognize
the responsibility of bringing the “good news” to our students. In all our courses, the curriculum is richly-based in
Catholic teaching focused on the Gospel. More information about Catholic Education Week can be found at the On-
tario Catholic Trustees web site (http://www.ocsta.on.ca/catholicEducationWeek.aspx) or
(http://www.goodnewsforall.ca/).
The annual COR (Christ on Retreat) gives secondary students an opportunity to explore the meaning of the
good news at a very practical level. Some students will be experiencing COR this weekend (April 17th – 19th). Fr.
Matt George from Tillsonburg visited a philosophy class and spoke about one of John Paul II’s encyclicals, “Faith
and Reason”. More details about this visit can be read at our department’s ‘Showcase’ web site
(http://www.ldcsb.on.ca/schools/smhs/relshowcase.html).
A World Religions field trip is being planned for May. Giving students the experience of learning the tradi-
tions and teachings of the world’s great faiths is part of Catholic education. As well, our grade 9 students will embel-
lish their unit titled “Be Loving” with several presentations in term II. Rita Butler (Holy Trinity Parish) and Ginnie
Woodall (Good Beginnings) will present several information sessions on chastity. Karen Gibbons’ “Teen Panel”
will also be making the rounds to our grade 9 students in May.
The MCT Bursary in Religious Studies or Medicine is a bursary based out of our department. For students
interested in post-secondary studies in the areas of medicine or religious studies, details can be found by visiting
http://www.ldcsb.on.ca/schools/smhs/mctbursary.html. As always, you can find out general information about our
department when you visit our web page @: http://www.ldcsb.on.ca/schools/smhs/religion.html.
Last week’s Easter celebration of Jesus’ victory over death reminds us once again of how the darkness does
not overcome the light. As we enter the Easter season in our Church, may the light continue to shine in the hearts of
students and staff here at St. Mary’s.

Worksplore student David Wilcox at STAPLES Student Success
The Student Success team here at St. Mary’s has been busy help-
ing our students achieve credits and get caught up in their
classes. Fifteen students have been able to complete their credits
from Semester 1 through our Save A Credit Program. Three
students are enrolled in the Credit Recovery program that runs
for one period per day. Students are continuing to work on-line
with a teacher in our system to achieve expectations from
courses they took in Semester 1. We wish them luck in recover-
ing their credits and getting back on track in regards to credit
accumulation.
Six students are taking the Worksplore program designed for
students under sixteen years of age. These students are working
towards a Career Studies credit as well as a Co-operative Edu-
cation credit. We thank Crabby Joe’s, Charles Dickens, Food-
land, McDonald’s (Norwich Ave.), Staples, Parkinson Tire and
Winner’s for providing a learning environment for our students.
Mrs. Kathy Travis is the teacher working with these students and
employers.
Nine students are enrolled in the Work Links program which is a
program designed for students sixteen years old and older. Stu-
dents work to earn a Navigating the Workplace credit as well as
a Co-operative Education credit. John Knox Christian School,

the students and their employers.
A team consisting of Mr. William Buchanan, Mrs. Michelle
Burrell, Mrs. Gail Moran and myself, Shannon Johnston, have
completed a Literacy resource based on the results of the OSSLT
for our school. This resource will be used by Grade 9 and 10
teachers to enhance English and Learning Strategies courses
here at St. Mary.
I have been working with Grade 8 students in our feeder schools
to help them make a smooth transition to our high school in Sep-
tember. They have spent two days with us and on April 22 will
participated in mini-camps designed by our own teachers and
they also participated in a drumming circle with a company from
Toronto, Rhythmic By Nature.
The drumming circle was also be enjoyed by our own students
for two periods of the day. All students enjoyed this experience
as a way to express themselves, relieve stress and have fun.

Social Science and Humanities

The new foods lab is now open! The lab is equipped with four kitchens, student work areas, demonstration area, new appli-
ances and all necessary equipment. Students can now develop their knowledge and skills in a modern and well equipped facil-
ity. Take a look at the photos showing the students enjoying the new facility.

As well, Mrs. Travis’ HPW3C class (Living and Working with Children) is currently enjoying weekly trips to St. Patrick's
Catholic School, where they are working with the Senior Kindergarten class. The students read with the SK's, do crafts and par-
ticipate in activities. At a later date, the HPW3C students will be preparing lessons for the younger students and as of next week,
we will be preparing meals with the School to Community class.

Summer School
LDCSB Summer School 2009
The Centre for Lifelong Learning through its Continuing Education Department provides LDCSB elementary and
secondary students with a variety of summer school programs.
Elementary Summer School (July 2 - July 24 – 17 school days)
Each year we offer to Grade 7 and 8 students a Literacy/Numeracy Prep for High School Program during the sum-
mer. This year this program will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting Thursday, July 2nd and ending Fri-
day, July 24th. We currently have the program scheduled to run at St. Anne, Blessed Sacrament, and Jean Vanier Ele-
mentary Schools. Please contact your child’s grade 7 or grade 8 teacher if you are interested in this program for your
child.
Reach Ahead Credits for Grade 8 Students In Secondary Summer School
Over the past 5 to 10 years, secondary summer school has changed from serving as a second chance to remediate a
high failure to a true extension of the secondary credit accumulation and pathway planning for students. We are now
at a point where we have over 300 Grade 8 students who "Reach Ahead" in the summer of their transition year from
Grade 8 to Grade 9 to get one of their secondary school credits before they walk through the doors of their high
school the following September. This allows them to better arrange their schedule of classes to access more credits
of interest than they might be able to do given the number of compulsory courses that sometimes makes accessing
other courses difficult. Also, we have a large number of these students who return in the summer of their Grade 9
year to take another summer school credit because they know that the summer school experience is a positive one
with no concern that the compressed nature of course delivery in summer school will mean a less rigorous course or
less preparation for them for the next level (year) of the program. If you have a child currently in Grade 8 and want
to know more about the Summer School Reach Ahead Credit Program either on-site or on-line, please contact your
child’s grade 8 teacher or call the CFLL directly at 519-675-4436.

On-line or e-Learning Course Delivery in Summer School (July 2 - July 29)

Last year was our first delivery of secondary summer school credits via the e-Learning platform and we had 135 stu-
dents receive credits on-line. The advantage of this method of course delivery is that it permits students to achieve a
summer school credits even if they live too far from the day-school site to attend or if they have summer commit-
ments (tournaments or day appointments) that make regular attendance at the summer school day-school not possible.
On-line credit delivery is also available for Grade 8 students to take a Reach Ahead credit if they cannot attend the
on-site summer school at CCH.

Secondary Summer School 2009 at CCH (July 2 - July 29 – 20 school days)

On-site Summer School continues to be a very popular program for students and our numbers are increasing each
year as more students take new credits during the summer. Students are able to take courses that move them towards
graduation and expand the variety of courses they can take within the regular, September-to-June, school year. Sum-
mer school has now become an important aspect of a student’s diploma planning, especially for students wishing to
take rigorous educational pathways or optional interest courses. Last year over 1,100 students enrolled in summer
school with the majority coming from our own LDCSB schools. This year summer school will be at Catholic Central
High School. Classes run from July 2 to July 29 (20 school days). Course offerings can be viewed by visiting our
website at www.cfll.on.ca or by getting a Summer School 2009 brochure available in the Guidance Office of LDCSB
secondary schools. Students attending summer school in the past have found it to be a very worthwhile and reward-
ing experience. Classes are filled on a first-to-register basis so it is important to register as early as possible in case
the course you want gets filled up. Registration is now open and registration forms are available on our website or
from Guidance at LDCSB secondary schools. See your guidance counsellor for more information and advice.
