first glance a compact X model, on second glance the
challenge of getting to know something new. lt starts
with the design: rising lateral lines lend the BMWX a
dynamic shape, while short overhangs and a sloping
rear windscreen create a sporty, elegant silhouette.

developing innovative systems that will bring us closer to the goal of emission-free mobility in the long term. This BMWinitiative for more driving pleasure is
based on several pillars:
TechnoIogy package. The optimisation of vehicles powered by conventional diesel and petrol engines continues apace. A comprehensive technology
package enables the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions, while at the same time increasing power output and driving enjoyment. These advances
are based on innovations such as BMWTwinPower Turbo technology, Brake Energy Regeneration and many others.
BMWActiveHybrid. The BMWActiveHybrid X and BMWActiveHybrid represent the rst two volume hybrid models in the BMW model range. They both
combine high efciency with superior dynamic performance.
BMWActiveE. will see the debut of a newtype of dynamism: the BMWActiveE. Powered by electricity alone, it is manufactured in a small production
run, as part of a pilot project. ln this way, BMWis preparing the way for the emissions-free mobility of tomorrow.
BMWHydrogen. BMWcontinues its research into alternative drive concepts for the future, such as hydrogen drive.
The BMWi brand will launch completely newvehicle concepts for sustainable mobility in an urban environment, such as the BMWi (Megacity Vehicle)
and the BMWi. Key features of these vehicle concepts include the use of lightweight materials such as CFRP, electric drive systems, powerful battery

Auto StartlStop function.
The BMWX sDrivei, xDrivei and xDrivei in combination with the
-speed manual transmission, automatically shut down the engine when
the vehicle is stationary, for example at a red light or in a trafc jam, when the
driver activates the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine restarts as
soon as the clutch is activated again. This innovation signicantly reduces
fuel consumption, especially in city trafc.
Oommon RaiI lnjection system.
The third-generation electronically controlled Common Rail lnjection system
generates pressure of up to , bar. Diesel fuel can be injected with greater
precision and in exactly calculated amounts. This lowers consumption and
emissions while at the same time enhancing engine performance.
DisengageabIe air conditioning compressor.
lf the air conditioning is not being used, the air conditioning compressor in the
BMWX sDrivei, xDrivei and xDrivei is uncoupled fromthe belt drive,
which prevents the usual loss of energy.
OptimumShift lndicator.
Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel.
This is where the OptimumShift lndicator in conjunction with -speed manual
and BMWX sDrivei, xDrivei and xDrivei models comes in. lt shows the
driver what gear to use in order to save fuel.
VaIvetronic.
Petrol engines with Valvetronic have fully variable valve lift control. This
improves the engines responsiveness and running smoothness while also
signicantly reducing fuel consumption.
Brake Energy Regeneration.
To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is
permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel
consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually
only generates electricity when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator
or the brake previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting
mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. ln this way,
electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel.
BMWTwinPower Turbo technoIogy.
This technology (BMWX sDrivei, xDrivei and xDrivei) combines
a TwinScroll turbocharger, Valvetronic fully variable valve control and
High Precision lnjection to signicantly reduce fuel consumption and
emissions, while also greatly improving acceleration. Thanks to the
TwinScroll turbocharger, the engine is ready with spontaneous responses
even at low engine speeds.

developed extremely efcient engines for the BMWX. That applies
to the petrol as well as all diesel engines. The BMWX xDrivei, for
instance, now has a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine. This delivers
abundant torque and power, even at low revs, and impressive
acceleration thanks to a combination of High Precision lnjection,
Valvetronic variable valve control and a TwinScroll turbocharger.
The engine develops its power uniformly as the revs increase and

As soon as xDrive recognises a tendencyto oversteer or understeer
based on driving data such as steering angle and wheel rotation speed
the systemresponds instantly. With the aid of an electronically controlled
multiple-disc clutch, it distributes drive power flexiblyto the axles within
fractions of a second to ensure optimal grip. ln this way, xDrive combines
the advantages of all-wheel drive traction, directional stability and
driving safety with the hallmark agility of a BMW.
1FSGPSNBODF $POUSPM This optional technology for xDrive models
uses dynamic engine and braking intervention to improve cornering
behaviour, thus boosting driving pleasure and enhancing safety at the
same time. Through targeted braking, optimal torque is distributed to
the individual wheels depending on the driving situation. Performance
Control also optimises engine performance management by gently
braking the rear wheel on the inside of the bend while at the same time
increasing torque to the wheel on the outside of the bend. This allows for
particularly dynamic cornering with the best possible grip. The BMWX
also responds to steering commands more spontaneously, for increased
agility and sporty driving.

driving pleasure. By clearly separating drive and steering, it permits an
optimal axle load distribution of virtually : , providing thrilling agility
and manoeuvrability on practically any road. Thanks to its optimally
configured lightweight chassis, the BMW X responds directly to every
steeringcommand, deliveringprecision handlingthat is unique in its class.
Safety and driving fun are not contradictory terms. And Dynamic Stability
Control (DSC) proves the point. With ultra-sensitive sensors permanently
monitoring the driving situation almost in real time DSCwill, if needed,
optimise directional stability and traction by intervening in the engine and
brake management systems. This makes it easier to control the vehicle
even in adverse conditions, and actively enhances driving safety and thus
driving pleasure. Extremely powerful brakes and an outstanding chassis
also play their part. As for visibility, the BMWX offers optionally available
Adaptive Headlights, which optimally illuminate the road and roadside as
you enter a bend. ln addition, turning lights and dynamic headlight range
control help to keep the essentials in viewat all times. Passive safety is
also taken seriously, starting with the highly rigid passenger cell. With
its extremely torsionally stiff design and numerous reinforcements for
instance, at the front end, B-pillar and rear it offers maximumpossible
safety. This earned the BMWX the highest possible award of ve stars
for occupant protection in the Euro NCAP crash test. ln the pedestrian
protection test it achieved the best result of all vehicles in the SUV
segment tested so far. Six airbags in the cabin of the BMW X provide
further protection. They include driver and front passenger airbags,
seat-integrated side airbags for the driver and front passenger, and
continuous head airbags (curtain) which, in a collision, cover the entire
side area fromfront to rear and offer splinter protection.

The BMWVision ConnectedDrive is a visionary roadster with a design that amazes at rst sight.
lts dynamic, owing lines drawthe eye fromthe distinctive front end, over the long bonnet
and then to an extraordinary synthesis of exterior and interior. Three levels in the interior each
symbolise an area of ConnectedDrive Convenience, lnfotainment and Safety. Accompanying
functions and controls are highlighted with different coloured lights that illuminate information.

USBlaudio interface with extended functions. ln conjunction with the USB/audio interface and an original
Apple iPodUSB cable, the albumcover for the track being played can be shown on the Control Display in
the car (the cover art display function is also available for other devices). The USB/audio interface also allows
the software in your BMWto be easily updated, so new mobile phones and music players become fully
operational after updating with a USB stick.

Oomfort access. This systemallows you to open, close and start your car without having to operate the
remote control. Touching the handle of the drivers or front passenger's door or the tailgate handle establishes a
radio link between the vehicle and the remote control to check for the correct identity. lf veried, the central
locking releases the locks and the door or tailgate opens. lf the remote control is recognised by one of the
antennas inside the cabin, the engine can also be started without a key, simply by pressing the START/STOP
button.
High-beam assist. No unintentional dazzle the optional High-beamassist recognises light sources
in the cars environment and switches the high beamon and off, according to the trafc situation. When
the systemis active, an image sensor at the back of the interior mirror monitors the trafc and lighting
conditions. Based on these sensor images, the systemdecides whether or not the high beamshould
be switched on. When it detects vehicles ahead, or nds that ambient light is sufcient, the high beam is
switched off again.

the start and stabilises the car in milliseconds.
Traction Mode (DTC) is a sub-function which
allows increased wheel slip to optimise propulsive
power in certain situations and enable a sportier
style of driving.
Adaptive HeadIights with variabIe Iight
distribution incI. turning Iights optimally
illuminate bends thanks to the swivelling
headlights as soon as the driver turns the wheel.
The turning light is automatically activated either
at a standstill when the indicator is used or, on the
move, when heavy steering lock is applied.
Bumpers withstand impacts up to km/h
without damage. Special crumple elements at
the front and rear absorb forces up to km/h.
Airbags: ln a BMW, all safety features
complement each other perfectly. There are
six airbags to provide specific protection:
driver and front passenger airbags, the front-
to-rear head airbags as well as side airbags
integrated in the front seat backrests.
RunfIat indicator minimises the risks
associated with tyre defects. The system
detects air pressure changes in the tyres and
then warns the driver by means of a warning in
the instrument cluster.
Door strengthening eIements provide
maximum occupant protection in the event of
a side impact. Cross members (strengthening
profiles) fitted diagonally in the doors ensure
impressive stiffness.
Performance OontroI: This electronic control
system ensures even greater dynamics through
corners. Variable power distribution is used to
actively turn the car into the corner, allowing even
greater driving precision (only available for xDrive
models).
Oornering Brake OontroI (OBO) increases
vehicle stability when braking gently in a fast
bend. During braking manoeuvres, the load on
the rear wheels is reduced, which can lead to
oversteering (). ln braking manoeuvres that are
outside the ABS control range, CBC addresses
this tendency by building up unilateral brake
pressure () in order to create a stabilising
counterforce ().
HiII Descent OontroI (HDO) is a system
for downhill driving which ensures that the
BMW tackles even steep downhill sections
automatically and safely at slightly over walking
speed and without the driver having to brake.
As an option, HDC can also be operated via the
Cruise Control steering column stalk (only
available for xDrive models).
