Calculations

Show all of your work for each of the following calculations and be careful to follow significant figure rules in each calculation. Part I: Density of Unknown Liquid 1. Calculate the mass of the liquid for each trial. (Subtract the mass of the empty graduated cylinder from the mass of the graduated cylinder with liquid.)

Trial 1
35.6 - 26 = 9.6

Trial 2
35.8 - 25.5 = 10.3

Trial 3
36.5 - 25.4 = 11.1 2. Calculate the density of the unknown liquid for each trial. (Divide the mass of the liquid calculated above by the volume of the liquid.)

Trial 1:
9.6 / 8.7 = 1.1

Trial 2:
10.3 / 8.6 = 1.2

Trial 3:
11.1 / 8.62 = 1.3

Part II: Density of Irregular-Shaped Solid 3. Calculate the volume of the irregular-shaped solid for each trial. (Subtract the volume of the water from the total volume of the water and solid.)

Trial 1:
55.5 51.0= 4.5

Trial 2:
56.0 - 51.1= 4.9

Trial 3:
58.0 53.0 = 5.0 4. Calculate the density of the irregular-shaped solid for each trial. (Divide the mass of the solid by the volume of the solid calculated above.)

Trial 1:
39.597 / 4.5 = 8.8

Trial 2:
38.567 / 4.9 = 7.9

Trial 3:
42.704 / 5.0 = 8.5

Part III: Density of Regular-Shaped Solid 5. Calculate the volume of the regular shaped solid for each trial. (Multiply the length width height for each trial to get the volume in the unit cm3.)
3

Trial 1:
5.3 * 3.0 * 2.5 = 39.75

Trial 2:
5.0 * 4.0 * 3.0 = 60

Trial 3:
4.5 * 3.5 * 2.0 = 31.5 6. Calculate the density of the regular-shaped solid for each trial. (Divide the mass of the solid by the volume calculated above.)

Trial 1:
26.5 / 39.75 = 0.667

Trial 2:
26.4 / 60 = 0.44

Trial 3:
25.8 / 31.5 = 0.819

Questions and Conclusions: 1. How would you determine the proper number of significant figures of a liquid using a graduated cylinder? (See practice interactive in "Activity" tab of lesson.)

You would have to be as accurate in your measurements as much as possible using the preciseness available in the measurements indicated on the cylinder
2. Can just one measurement be considered precise? Can just one measurement be considered accurate? Explain your answers completely.

Only one measurement cannot be precise since you are limited by the precision of
the instrument, but it is important to be as accurate as possible in your measurements like reading water volume at the bottom of the meniscus at eye level.

Accuracy can be achieved for only one measurement, as long as its near the accepted value.
3. In parts II and III of the lab you used different sized objects in each trial. Compare the density values that you calculated for these items, how do the three trials compare?

The trials all have accuracy and precision. The densities were constant; if there was a difference between the measurements, it was not greater than one point value difference.
