Separating recyclables will be a practice
of the past for Burlington County residents
starting next May with the implementation
of streamlined recycling.
The big blue cart, which residents cur-
rently use for cardboard and paper, will
soon be an all-purpose recycling tool.
Single-stream is convenient, increases
recycling volume and saves money, the
countys website says.
Currently, the county is working to find
out whether residents are in need of the
blue cart, or a second cart to supplement
the amount of recyclables put to the curb
each week.
If residents currently have a 48-gallon,
64-gallon or 96-gallon cart, theyre asked to
visit the county website to determine
whether they need a second one before May.
To determine whether an extra one is
needed, residents are asked to visit
www.co.burlington.nj.us/pages/pages.aspx
?cid=1024#FAQS to determine their usage
and if another cart is needed. The deadline
for registration is Sept. 30.

Annual
Delran Day
set for
Sept. 29
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Delran Sun
The Delran Business Associa-
tion and Delran Township are
gearing up for the fifth Annual
Delran Day on Sept. 29 from
noon-4 p.m. at Holy Cross High
School.
According to Mayor Ken Paris,
more than 70 businesses attended
the event last year.
It started as a giveback to the
community, Paris said. Busi-
nesses buy tables and provide
products.
The Delran Historical Society,
fire and EMS in addition to the
police department and various
churches will be at the event.
According to Paris, Delran Day
was inspired by the economic
downturn. The township and
business associations answer
was to give back to the communi-
ty.
People couldnt afford to go on
vacation. We wanted to offer
something for residents and fam-
ilies, Paris said.

According to Nick Manousos,
chairperson of Delran Day, one of
the biggest differences from last
years event to this year is the in-
volvement with the Food Bank of
South Jersey, headquartered in
Pennsauken.
Well be asking for a $2 dona-
tion to the Food Bank for kids to
have unlimited play on the moon
bounce/rides section, Manousos
said.
All proceeds from the rides
will be donated directly to the
Food Bank.
Additionally, the business as-
sociation will be running a snack
stand with donated food. The
money accrued throughout the
day will directly benefit the asso-
ciations scholarship fund, which
benefits two seniors headed to
college.
Both the association and the
township are anticipating anoth-
er successful event.
Were looking forward to it.
As a board member and business
owner its great, said Paul
Costello, second vice president of
the business association. We get
to meet a lot of the local people
that are our customers through
the years.
According to Manousos, ap-
proximately 2,000 people turned
out for last years event. Hes ex-
pecting about the same, but hop-
ing for more people, he said.
Its a good event for our local
business and for community
members to come out, Costello
said. Its good for people to get
out and socialize with other com-
munity members.
Holy Cross really deserves a
thank you, because they offer
their facility free of charge and
allow the vendors to line up
around the track, Manousos
said.
According to Manousos, there
will also be demonstrations from
dance and karate studios in addi-
tion to a DJ and bands as enter-
tainment.
Its a great day to bring your
family out and have a fun day,
Manousos said. We spend a lot
of time throughout the year plan-
ning the event. Its nice.

College to distribute
books to children
With support from an alliance
of education advocates, Burling-
ton County College unveiled re-
cently an initiative to distribute
40,000 books to children in need
throughout Burlington County.
Working with N.J. Higher Edu-
cation Secretary Rochelle Hen-
dricks, John Harmon, Sr., presi-
dent and CEO, of the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce, and First Book, a nonprof-
it social enterprise that provides
new books and educational re-
sources to kids in need, BCC stu-
dents will coordinate efforts to
distribute free books to schools
and organizations serving com-
munities in need throughout
Burlington County.
The college is the first in the
nation to build this effort into its
English and Service Learning
curriculum.
Every child should have
books to read at home, Burling-
ton County Freeholder Joe Don-
nelly said. Burlington County
College will be a model for the
rest of the nation on how stu-
dents and community groups can
get books to children who need
them.
First Book is part of an educa-
tion initiative by the African
American Chamber of Com-
merce of New Jersey called
Making New Jersey More Com-
petitive.
The goal is to develop and
strengthen the marketable skills
of future job seekers throughout
the state. First Book will help
achieve this goal by delivering
new, high-quality books and ma-
terials to children in need in
Burlington County.

T
welve years have passed since
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 12 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 12 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Twelve years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us, are
setting up 9/11 memorials, obtaining
steel from the World Trade Center to
display and hosting 9/11 remem-
brances.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 12 years ago. We should always
respectfully pause and respect those
who were taken from us and those
who fight for our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 12 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.
We will never forget
Twelve years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

Mayor urges residents to attend Delran Day
The fifth Annual Delran Community
Day event is quickly approaching.
The Township of Delran and the Delran
Business Association sponsor this commu-
nity event.
It will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29 at Holy
Cross High School from noon until 4 pm.
The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 6.
The original concept of Delran Day was
to be a give back to the community.
Five years ago was the beginning of the
decline of the economy.
People werent able to afford those long
luxurious vacations anymore, so the Town-
ship of Delran and our township local busi-
nesses worked together to put this activity
together so residents could enjoy a wonder-
ful day with their family.
Not to mention that this event is totally
funded through sponsorships and vendors
and doesnt cost the Delran taxpayers one
cent.
Delran Community Day features dozens
of vendors and activities for the entire fam-
ily. The Community Day showcases the
towns various businesses, but there will
also be things to do for children and adults,
including a return of the rock climbing
wall, moon bounce, carnival games and
bands and live entertainment.
The Delran Emergency Services will
also be featured with representation from
the police, fire department and emergency
squad, which will provide information
about their services and equipment that is
sure to be fun and educational.
Demonstrations by karate studios and
performances by dance teams as well as
the live bands are always a highlight of the
annual event.
Most activities are free with the excep-
tion of the inflatable rides; this year we
have decided to charge a charitable dona-
tion of $2, which will go directly to the
Food Bank of South Jersey.
So, Delran Day should be a nice time to
come out and enjoy yourself it should be
another great time for all.
I hope to see you there.

According to the county, it is es-
timated that more than 30,000
homes may need an extra cart, of
differing sizes. It will take months
to gather everyones information,
order the carts and deliver the
right sized carts to the right
homes next spring. And keep plas-
tic bags out of recycling buckets
and carts.
Delran Township residents
have both a yellow and blue buck-
et as part of the recycling pro-
gram. Yellow is designated for
commingling of various types of
bottles in addition to glass and
plastic recyclables. The blue buck-
ets are utilized for paper and card-
board recyclables.
When they do the new system,
everybody will put everything
into the blue bucket, said Jerry
DeSanto, superintendent of the
department of public works.
Hopefully, they will recycle some
more. It will be better for the com-
munity.
The single-stream system is
meant to greatly reduce the
amount of trash sent to the land-
fill, which will ultimately save the
township money.
If people recycle more, less
money will be spent collecting
trash, DeSanto said. Its very ex-
pensive to get rid of trash, so this
will help alleviate some of those
costs.
According to DeSanto, the
county has conducted studies on
the amount of recyclables resi-
dents are putting in the buckets.
If people can take a couple
more bottles and some more card-
board out, it will lessen how much
we collect in trash, DeSanto said.
DeSanto noted his reservations
about residents gauging how
many buckets they will need.
According to the county, the
program is free for residents.
According to DeSanto, the town-
ship and county equally cover the
cost.
What were afraid of is that
people with larger families are
going to order a second bucket
after the program begins, DeSan-
to said, noting he is unsure of the
townships financial responsibili-
ty of the second bucket.
According to DeSanto, hell be
attending a meeting to discuss
whether the cost will be complete-
ly covered by the county or shared
with the township.
He is, however, confident the
system will be easier for resi-
dents.
It will be more appealing to
them to recycle to throw every-
thing in the same bucket, DeSan-
to said.
According to the county, stud-
ies show single-stream brings
with it an increase of 10 percent
or more in recycling. The more
people recycle, the less waste
there is in landfills. Last year, re-
cycling saved the towns more than
$3.2 million in landfill tipping
fees. Those cost-savings are effec-
tively tax savings, since they im-
prove the bottom line of munici-
pal budgets.
Currently, major facility modi-
fications are being made to the
Robert C. Shinn Recycling Center
in Westampton. Following that,
new single-stream sorting equip-
ment will be installed, according
to the county.
For more information on the
program or how to register for an
additional cart, visit

This is one of a number of ini-
tiatives by our organization that
will provide an immediate impact
in transforming the lives of our
young people and place them on a
path of success, Harmon said.
First Book President and CEO
Kyle Zimmer said the initiative
will instill leadership skills in
current BCC students and im-
prove educational opportunities
for children in need.
No one understands the trans-
formative power of education bet-
ter than community college stu-
dents, said Zimmer. Were
thrilled that Burlington County
College is stepping up to trans-
form the lives of kids in need in
their community with brand-new
books.
Those 40,000 books are going
to help turn a lot of children into
readers.
The project will span the entire
2013-2014 academic year. Students
will identify and contact poten-
tially eligible groups and encour-
age them to apply to First Book.
This spring, a truck will deliver
40,000 books with a retail value
of nearly $400,000, donated by
publishers to BCCs Mount Lau-
rel Campus.
Students will sort the books
and distribute them to groups
that meet certain criteria, such as
serving disabled children, mili-
tary families or a large number of
low-income families.

Book, visit www.firstbook.org.
Organizations interested in ap-
plying, should contact BCCs

Tennis team ready for another strong year
By NICK COHEN
The Delran Sun
Previous success brings expec-
tations. After winning a game in
the state playoffs a year ago and
returning several key players this
season, the Delran High School
girls tennis team has high expec-
tations.
They know what they want to
accomplish. Its not me that has to
tell them, its them. They want to
build each year. Last year, we won
one game in the state playoffs.
This year they want to win two.
Theyre motivated to keep getting
better, head coach Bill Boden-
schatz said.
The teams sense of cama-
raderie and ability to drive each
other are things that excite Bo-
denschatz entering the season.
It makes it a lot easier and a
lot more fun for the team. The
team has come together and they
continue to push each other to get
better every day. The seniors who
have grown up within the pro-
gram are showing incoming
freshmen and underclassmen
what to do to improve and what
they have to do to succeed, Bo-
denschatz said.
The Lady Bears will look to
four seniors and one junior to
lead them both on and off the
court.
At first singles, Kaitlin Fee is a
junior. She transferred from Holy
Cross last year so she had to sit
out for a bit. I know shes excited
to just go play and show what she
can do, Bodenschatz said.
Emmy Groman is a senior who
stepped up for us last year and ex-
celled. And Shannalyn Murt has
played varsity doubles for us
since she was a freshman. She
wanted this spot last year, so it re-
ally lit a fire under her to come
and get it this season.
While first team doubles is set
with seniors Emily Martin and
Breanna Boyd, the competition
for second doubles is wide open.
That slot is to be announced
as of right now. We have six girls
who are competing and working
hard to earn that last spot, Bo-
denschatz said.
Delran finished last season 11-8
before exiting in the quarterfinals
of the Central Jersey Group II
tournament. According to Boden-
schatz, each year as the program
progresses, the goals for the next
season escalate.
The goal before last season
was to finish above .500 for the
first time in a few years, and we
did that. We wanted to beat Cin-
naminson. Thats a team that we
havent beaten in six years, and
we did. The team just loved it.
They were really excited and they
want to keep improving and
building on that, Bodenschatz
said.
With the success the team is
seeing, the number of players the
program fields continues to grow.
We have a sizable team this
year with more than 25 members.
Its great for the entire program;
it allows us to split them up so
each coach can spend time with
one group. It allows the varsity
team to travel so the JV team can
actually play games at home.
And, honestly, it keeps girls inter-
ested and invested as they are
given more opportunities to play,
Bodenschatz said.
