Vocabulary Activity #1

Essay

1. The students will be given the first vocabulary list and the teacher will go over
each word.
2. The students should already be familiar with the words from other activities and
lecture.
3. The students will be expected to pick 3 or 4 words from the list and compose an
essay.
4. The essay will have to demonstrate the student’s comprehension of the words and
how they are related to each other and the Early Republic.

Grading

1. A- the student demonstrates that they fully comprehend each word that they
choose to discuss and touch of each way that they relate to each other.
2. B- the student demonstrates that they fully comprehend each word, but they only
discuss and touch on some of the ways that they relate to each other.
3. C- the student demonstrates that they comprehend most of the words and only
discuss and touch on some of the ways that they relate to each other.
4. D- the student demonstrates that they only comprehend one of the words and do
not discuss and touch on the ways that they relate to each other.
5. F- the student demonstrates that they do not comprehend any of the words and do
not discuss and touch on the ways that they relate to each other.
Vocabulary Activity #2
Game-Jeopardy

1. The students will be divided up into two teams.


2. The teacher will put up a Jeopardy board on the smart board for the students
to pick the difficulty of questions based on points that they would like to
answer.
3. The teacher will give the definition or word, depending on the difficulty of the
question, and the student will have to answer correctly.
4. The team that wins will be awarded with extra credit points to keep them all
involved.
Vocabulary Activity #3
Flash Cards

1. The students will be given vocabulary list #3 and will be given time to
read over them.
2. The students will then pull out their flash cards and create a flash card for
each word with the definition on one side and the word on the other.
3. The students will then for homework study using the flash cards.
4. The next day the students will be paired up with one another and will quiz
each other on the words, using the flash cards.
Vocabulary Activity #4
Poem

1. The students will be given vocabulary list #4 and will be given time to look
over the words.
2. The teacher will then have each student create a poem using as many of the
words on the list as possible.
3. The students will then present the poems to the class for a grade.

Grade
1. A- Presentation is clear and the student demonstrates that they fully
understand at least 10 words.
2. B- Presentation is for the most part clear and the student demonstrates that
they fully understand 5-9 words.
3. C- Presentation is not clear and the student demonstrates that they fully
understand 4 words.
4. D- Presentation is not clear and the student demonstrates that they fully
understand 3 words or less.
5. F- Presentation is not clear and the student does not demonstrate that they
understand any of the words.
Vocabulary Activity #5
Group Activity- Hint and Guess

1. The teacher will give the students vocabulary list #5 and give the students time to
read over the words.
2. The teacher will then divide the students into groups of 3 or 4.
3. One student in each group will then give hints on a word or definition and the
other students will try to guess the word or definition.
4. After they have finished each word, the students will switch roles until they all
have been the hinter.
Vocabulary Activity #6
Simultaneous Translation

1. The teacher will give the students vocabulary list #6 and the students will then
read over the list.
2. The teacher will then divide the students up into two groups.
3. The first group will start the activity by telling the other group one of the words.
4. The second group will then have to give an immediate definition of the word.
5. This process will be repeated numerous times until the students have a full
understanding of the words.
Vocabulary Activity #7
Wordle

1. The teacher will give the students vocabulary #7 and will go over the words with
the students.
2. The teacher will then take the students to the computer lab and demonstrate how
to create on wordle at www.wordle.com
3. The students will then create a wordle for each word on the list. A wordle
consists of as many words as possible to describe another word.
4. The students will email their wordle’s to the teacher for a grade.

Grade

1. A- The student creates a wordle for each word and demonstrates that they fully
understand each word.
2. B- The student creates a wordle for each word and demonstrates that they fully
understand most of the words.
3. C- The student creates a majority of the wordle’s and demonstrates that they fully
understand each word they use.
4. D- The student creates less than the majority of the wordle’s and does not
demonstrate that they understand each word they use.
5. F- The student does not create any wordle’s.
Vocabulary Activity #8
Newspaper Headlines

1. The students will create a newspaper headline using 5 of the words in vocabulary
list #8.
2. The students will have to present to the class their headline and explain why they
chose this headline.

Grade

1. A- The students uses 5 words from the list and demonstrates that they fully
understand each word.
2. B- The student uses 5 words from the list, but only demonstrates that they
understand some of the words.
3. C- The student uses less than 5 words from the list and only demonstrates that
they understand some of the words.
4. D- The student uses less than 5 words and does not demonstrate that they
understand any of the words.
5. F- The student does not participate.
