Lead-in
Have a world map or atlas available. On the board, draw the outline of different countries (if you have students from different countries, you could draw the outline of their countries). Ask students to try to identify each country as you draw it. If necessary, add extra details like the location of the capital city, major rivers, borders, coastlines, etc.

A
Check that all the students know what a crossword puzzle is. Tell them they will each have a crossword grid with clues for five of the ten answers. The answers are all either countries or nationalities. Write these examples on the board and elicit the answers (Russian and Brazil): The nationality of people from Moscow. This country is next to ten countries, including Argentina, Colombia, and Bolivia. Divide the class into pairs. Give one student in each pair a copy of Worksheet A and give the other students a copy of Worksheet B. First have them work individually to solve the five clues on their worksheet and write the answers in their grid. Monitor while the students are working, and check that they fill in the answers correctly.

Elicit the rest of the question in each case (What nationality are people from Moscow? Which country is next to ten countries, including Argentina, Colombia, andBolivia?). Explain that they should take turns requesting clues from each other. When they request a clue, e.g., for 3 across, their partner should read out the question. Point out that if a student cannot work out an answer from the clue provided, they should leave the answer blank and lose their turn. Have the students continue in this way until one of them has completed their crossword. If neither student can complete their crossword with the clues they are given, they should take turns thinking of additional clues, using different prompts if possible.

To demonstrate, write the following prompts on the board for the two example clues above: What nationality Which country

Ask the students to identify the nationality that corresponds with each country in the completed puzzle, and vice versa, and show these in a table on the board. Ifnecessary, drill the pronunciation of each word.

Web homework
Ask the students to choose five different countries, and to find two famous places and people from each one. Encourage them to use more unusual countries. In the next lesson, invite them to read out their famous places and people, and see if other students can identify the country/nationality in each case.
