SECTION 016000 MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT ___________________________________________________________________________ PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION: A.

This section specifies the General Requirements for Materials and Equipment, including requirements for handling, transportation and storage thereof, including adherence to the manufacturer's requirements in these respects. The requirements of this section are augmented by specific clauses specifying quality throughout all sections of the Specification.

PERFORMANCE AND STANDARDS A. All materials and equipment shall perform as specified and the handling, transportation and storage thereof shall be as specified and such that the ultimate performance of the materials and equipment shall in no way be impaired. The quality of materials and reference to Standards and Codes of Practice is covered in section 01060, Regulatory Requirements. Where, in the course of the Project, materials, products, assemblies, equipment or techniques, are required which are not named, definitively described or implied in the Specification, they shall nonetheless conform to all relevant current Standards and Codes of Practice, and the Contractor shall maintain both as regards Materials and Workmanship and quality, suitability and performance which are not less than implicit in this Specification to the satisfaction of the Engineer.

DEFINITIONS: A. PRODUCT: These are items purchased for incorporation in the Work. The term products includes materials, equipment, system and terms of similar intent. B. MATERIAL: These are products that are substantially shaped, cut, worked, mixed, finished, refined, or otherwise fabricated, processed, or installed to form part of the Work. C. EQUIPMENT: This is a product with operational parts, whether motorized or manually operated, that requires service connections such as wiring or piping.

Prepare a schedule showing products specified in a tabular form acceptable to the Engineer. Include generic names of products required. Include the manufacturers name and proprietary products names for each item listed. Coordinate the product list schedule with the Construction Schedule and the Schedule of Submittals. Contractors

QUALITY ASSURANCE: A. SOURCE LIMITATIONS: To the fullest extent possible, provide products of the same kind, from a single source. B. COMPATIBILITY of OPTIONS: When the Contractor is given the option of selecting between two or more products for use on the Project; the product selected shall be compatible with products previously selected, even if previously selected products were also options. C. LOCAL PRODUCTS: The priority shall be given to products manufactured in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as long as they meet the reference standards and shall be in conformance with the project documents requirement. D. Where applicable, use of materials and equipment removed from existing premises shall not be permitted, unless otherwise indicated on the Contract Documents. For similar components, provide interchangeable components of same manufacturer.

PRODUCT TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING, STORAGE AND PROTECTION: A. Transport, store, and handle products in accordance with the manufacturers instruction, using means and methods that will prevent soiling, disfigurement, damage, deterioration and loss including, theft. Coordinate delivery with installation time to ensure minimum holding time for items that are flammable, hazardous, easily damaged or sensitive to deterioration, theft and other loses. Transport products to the site of manufacturers original sealed container or other packaging systems complete with labels and instructions for handling, storing, unpacking, protecting and installing.

Inspect products upon delivery to ensure compliance with the Contract Documents and to ensure that products are undamaged and properly protected. Store products to damage by elements above ground, under cover in a weather tight enclosure and with ventilation adequate to prevent condensation. Maintain temperature and humidity within range required by manufacturers instructions. Provide secure storage for products and protect stored products from pilferage, vandalism and other loss or damage. Store and secure products so as not to present a safety hazard. For exterior storage, fabricated products shall be placed on sloped supports, located above ground. Products subject to deterioration shall be covered with impervious sheet covering. Provide off-site storage and protection when site does not permit on-site storage or protection subject to the approval of the Engineer. Loose granular materials shall be stored on solid flat surfaces in a welldrained area. Precautions shall be taken to prevent mixing with foreign matter. During the construction / installation period of the Contract, all plant and equipment shall be wrapped in polyethylene sheeting to protect the equipment from dust, sand or other trades. Store products organized in such a way as to permit access for inspection. Contractor shall periodically inspect stored products to assure that they are undamaged and are being maintained under specific conditions.

PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 PRODUCT SELECTION: A. The Contractor shall provide products that comply with the Contract Documents and the specific performances indicated or specified, and which are recommended by the manufacturer in writing, for the application indicated. All materials and equipment to be used in the work shall be best standard products of manufacturers, new, and shall not show sign of defects or impurities. Where available, provide standard products of types that have been produced and used successfully in similar situations on other projects. When the matching of an established sample is required, the Engineer is the final judge of whether a product proposed by the contractor matches the sample satisfactorily. Reference in the Specifications to approved manufacturers shall be construed as establishing a standard of quality and not as limiting of competition.

Contractor may submit equivalent products from other reputable international or local manufacturer for the approval of the Engineer. MANUFACTURER Where reference is made in the Specification to "the Manufacturer", this shall mean the firm under whose name the particular product is identified. The term "Manufacturer's Recommendation" shall mean the manufacturer's recommendation, instructions, printed specification or in writing and currently available during the period of the Contract. G. EXCESS MATERIALS Remove excess materials including demolished materials, excess earth and excess building materials, if owned by the Contractor, from the site. H. NAMEPLATES Each piece of equipment shall be provided with a substantial nameplate of non-corrodible metal, securely fastened in place and clearly and permanently inscribed with the manufacturers name, model or type designation, serial number, principal rated capacities, electrical or other power characteristics, and similar information as appropriate. Each equipment, instrument and process valve shall be provided with a substantial tag of non-corrodible metal securely fastened in place and inscribed with an identification number in conformance with the identification indicated on the drawings or furnished later by the Engineer. I. SPECIAL TOOLS For each type of equipment furnished by the Contractor, the Contractor shall provide a complete set of all special tools (including grease guns or other lubricating devices) which may be necessary for the adjustment operation, maintenance and disassembly of such equipment. Tools shall be high-grade, smooth, forged, alloy, tool steel. Grease guns shall be lever type. Special tools are considered to be those tools which because of their limited use are not normally available, but which are necessary for the particular equipment. Special tools shall be delivered at the same time as the equipment to which they pertain. The Contractor shall properly store and safeguard such special tools until completion of the work, at which time they shall be delivered to the Employer. As directed or permitted, the Contractor shall furnish and erect one or more neat and substantial steel wall cases with flat key locks and clips or hooks to hold each tool in a convenient arrangement.

SECTION 016000 MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT ___________________________________________________________________________ PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION OF PRODUCT: A. Comply with manufacturers instruction and recommendations for installation of products in the application indicated. Anchor each product securely in place, accurately located and aligned with other work. The Contractor shall at all time use his best endeavors to produce materials and work of a consistent and high quality and standard, whether or not such standard is identifiable in the Specification. The Contractor shall abide by the Engineer's interpretation of the Specification and shall comply with his decisions regarding the quality of Materials and Workmanship.
