I agree with Rodriguez that family language should be kept out of the school environment.

Language is a complex social and cognitive system that influences how a child learns and interacts with their environment. It is what creates relations amongst the human race. However, this does not mean that there is a universal language that is perfect for all environments. Even if the language is understood by others surrounding them, it is the effect that is more important. Furthermore, there needs to be a differentiation between each environment, which can be done through language, in order to create comfort to each surrounding. The same language can be spoken in different ways that is appropriate for different audiences. We live in a place full of diversity which is the root to culture, and this means that each language is the representation of the history behind that culture. Hence, certain languages should only be spoken in certain environments. In America, English is the official language, and is expected to be understood by everyone in the country. However, this does not make it the most appropriate language. In the home environment the native language would be better. This is because the home environment consists of different relationships and cultures that is more inborn and comfortable to the child. For example, I come from an Indian family but have lived in America all my life. However, due to the culture connected to my family I speak Hindi since it is more appropriate. It is a way for me to still stay connected my country and culture I left at a young age. Home is a safety zone and language helps to create that. English is expected at school because their needs to be discipline. There are thousands of schools across the nation, filled with hundreds of kids. Unfortunately, teachers cannot be expected to know ten different languages and teach every group in their home language. This is purely ridiculous. Time is of the essence, and one language creates time efficiently as well as a much needed formal environment. The education part of school is not a homely, comfortable environment, but rather very scheduled and systematic. Therefore, the home language does not fit and should not be involved in school. As humans, we tend to have different parts in our lives where we show different parts of ourselves. Depending on the environment, we act, speak, and present ourselves in a different way because we are surrounded by different people. When I am in school I

speak English to meet the requirements of the school, but also to connect with my friends. However, the English I speak with my friends is not the same as the English I speak with my parents. Among my friends, we have our own jargon that we have created through the memories we have made together. These words may mean nothing to my parents but brings laughter to my friends face. The English I speak with my friends is much more casual, whereas with my parents it is more formal, and respected. In my house, we speak both English and Hindi. Both are considered to be home languages. However, when I speak English at home, I use more proper verbiage and sentence structure that is more fitted to the Indian culture, since we put our parents right next to our God. Language creates the environment we are in, and it alters as the people around us change. Not every language is appropriate because it may not suit the relationship and history you have with the people being conversed with. Language is the doorway to people and environments. They change as the people and environments change. The home language is meant to be for the people closest to your heart whom you share a very cultured relationship with. This is a limited language that should only be spoken to certain people because only certain people with be able to understand the culture, history, value, and meaning behind it. Whereas, in school, the language is standardized so that there is an ease in communicating. The school language is what connects the people in that environment together. Even if the language is the same, the usage of the language is different. The way you speak with your friends and parents is completely different due to the relationship you share with them. Language is a key that doesnt fit in every key hole. We have to change the key to make it fit. In the same way, language is not appropriate in all environments.
