RMPS S1 S3 Homework Projects

Three projects must be completed this year in December; March and June. There is one compulsory task due each year and you may choose any other two of the projects below to be completed. Please read the instructions for each task carefully. Homework projects are not to be completed in your jotter and must be in your own words. You may present your information in any way you wish, unless otherwise stated, for example: essay, report, letter, diary entry, PowerPoint, with pictures/drawings etc. Projects must be completed on time and signed by your parent/carer in the box below your chosen option.
Option 1
Religion in Scotland Write a report on religion in Scotland. Include information about different religions found here, and how/when some of these groups arrived in Scotland. Explain how Scotland has benefited from the introduction of different religious groups and any problems that have been created as a result.

Option 2
Write to a religious figure Find out about a current local issue in your area. Investigate if religious groups have been involved. How have they responded? Have they shown what they believe in by their response to the issue? Give a description of the issue, your own opinion and if religious groups have been involved. Write to a religious figure asking for their opinion on the issue.

Option 3
Visit St Mungos Museum, Glasgow Visit this museum and look at all the different artefacts and exhibits. Take a photo or draw a picture of an item from each of the religions below. Include a label and a description of the item. Write a short report to accompany your pictures detailing what you learned and enjoyed. Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism and Sikhism.

Option 4
Operation Christmas Child Put together a shoebox for this appeal. Leaflets will be handed out from the beginning of November. Collect a leaflet, get items together and put them into a shoebox wrapped in Christmas paper. These are then sent to children across the world who would not receive gifts at Christmas. Reflect on why you think this type of charity work is important. Present your findings in any format.

Option 5
Create a memory board Think of all the things that represent your life; friends, family, hobbies etc. Create a memory board, using photographs, drawings and words. You must include reference to your beliefs and values which are important to you. You will be asked to explain your board to your teacher. Be prepared to explain your reasons for selecting and including different items.

Option 6
Religious Festivals Choose one of the following festivals to investigate: Holi, Diwali, Wesak or Hanukkah. Who celebrates this festival and why? Find out as much as you can and include pictures and information about your chosen festival. What do you think about this festival? Why do you think it is important to this group? Present your findings in any format.

This task is compulsory for S1 and must be completed for December.

Option 7
Suffering in the world Watch or read the news and choose an article that highlights the suffering of others in the world. Give a summary of the issue and reflect upon why it is a concern for you. Explain what you think caused the issue and how you think it could be addressed. Write up your findings in an essay.

Option 8
www.change.org Look at this website and find an issue you care about and sign the petition (or start your own!). Give the details of the campaign, an explanation of the reasons you signed the petition and what you hope will happen as a result. Produce a report on A4 paper, clearly presenting your findings.

Option 9
Beliefs Survey Come up with 4 survey questions about religious beliefs. Ask these questions to 5 different people you know, at least 2 adults, and compare these with your own opinions. Explain how these are the same/different to your opinions and why you think this is. Include a graph to show your results, presented in any format.

Conflict Investigate any war or conflict going on in the world just now. Research the historical reasons and if religion has played a part. What does this conflict mean for people today? Does it affect your life in any way? What should be done to resolve the situation, in your opinion? Your findings must be clearly presented in any format.

Option 11
Science and Religion How did the universe get here? Some people say science and religion cannot go together. Think about your own beliefs and give your own explanation, a scientific view and a religious belief. Do you think science and religion are opposites? Research this topic and present your findings in the form of a report including a scientific view, a religious view and your own opinion.

Option 12
Big Questions Think about questions you have about life and the world that cannot be answered. Make a list of as many as you can and choose 3 to explore. How do these impact your life? Get opinions from your friends and family about how they would answer these questions. How do these compare to your own beliefs and views? Present your findings in any format.

This task is compulsory for S2 and must be completed for June.

Option 13
Rules, punishment and religion What are the 10 Commandments? What rules do we have in society? How are these two sets of rules similar or different. Why do you think the Commandments are important for religious groups? Why do you think it is important we have rules and consequences in society? Write up your findings in an essay.

Option 14
My Views What are your beliefs about religion? In what ways does religion affect the world you live in? Do you think RMPS is an important part of your education? Is there anything in particular you would like to learn about and why? Present your information in any format but you must include full explanations for your reasons.

Option 15
Fairtrade Investigate what Fairtrade is. Include as much information as you can. Do you think Fairtrade is a good thing? Why do you think this? Give at least 2 reasons for your answer. How does the school support Fairtrade? Your findings must be presented clearly with at least an A4 page worth of writing, in any format.

Option 16
Visit Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow Visit this museum and look at all the different artefacts and exhibits. Look for the Salvador Dali painting called Christ of St John of the Cross. Sketch or write about everything you see in the painting. How does this painting make you feel? Is it different to other pictures of Jesus you have seen? Hand in your findings including what you see and your feelings.

Option 17
humanism.org.uk Look at this website and investigate what is meant by Humanism. Give the details of the organisation, their beliefs and how these compare to the beliefs that you have. Click on campaigns and find the list of our campaigns on the right hand side. Select one campaign and explore it. Include your own opinion in your final report. Produce a report with your research and opinions.

Option 18
Amnesty International Find out who Amnesty International are and what they do. Do you think this work is important? Create an information leaflet about the organisation including what you find out. Include information about Human Rights what these are and what you are entitled to.

This task is compulsory for S3 and must be completed for December.
