LESSON PLAN

Year: Date: Year 7 14th August 2012 Curriculum Area: Time Period: Mathematics (ACMMG160) 45 Minutes

The Australian National Curriculum Mathematics: Measurement and Geometry ACMMG160 Calculate volumes of rectangular prisms Mathematical Proficiencies: Problem Solving Students will develop the ability to make choices and investigate solutions in a problem solving situation Students will solve problems by using mathematical terms to represent unfamiliar situations Students will apply their existing strategies to solve unfamiliar problems Reasoning Students will develop an increased capacity for logical thought, in particular justifying their thought process Specific Lesson Learning Goals Students will be able to: Build at least five different rectangular prisms using Uni-fix blocks Draw the three dimensional shapes they have created Record the size of their three dimensional shapes in terms of the number of blocks Students Prior Knowledge: Students know what three dimensional shapes are Students have drawn cubes, rectangular prisms and other three dimensional shapes Differentiation: Students who finish early Create other regular and irregular three dimensional shapes Draw the supplementary shapes that they have drawn Students who are struggling Focus on building the shapes rather drawing the shapes Discuss the differences between the prisms How are they different Preparation: White board and marker Uni-fix blocks Paper

LESSON PLAN
Time: Start Getting Started Ask all the students for their attention and for quiet Review three dimensional shapes with the students what we covered last time Review how we draw three dimensional shapes Explain to the students that they are going to build three dimensional shapes using the Uni-fix blocks Model an example with a cube of Uni-fix blocks Explain that once the students have built their shape they need to sketch it on paper On the shape, record how many blocks each side of the shape has 10 minutes Demonstrate the drawing and recording on the white board Check that the students understand what they have to do Working On It Have volunteers hand out the blocks and the paper Instruct the students to share the blocks and to work in pairs with the person next to them Instruct the students that they should use a pencil when they start their sketches Allow the students to quietly discuss building their shapes As the students are working, walk around the room checking that the students are on task Answer any questions the students have about the work 35 minutes Ask the students to clarify what they are doing with the uni-fix blocks Ask the students to clarify why they are building their shape in the way they are Correct any misconceptions the students have about the work Take photographs of the students completed shapes Consolidation Ask the students to clear away the materials and hand their paper sketched to me 45 minutes Ask the students to return to their desks and sit quietly Ask the students some focus questions About the most interesting shapes they managed to create today Why we might want to record the size of the sides of the their shapes What can we do with the sizes we have recorded What is the area of the base of the rectangular prism Tell the students they had a great lesson and dismiss the class for their next lesson Lesson Progression

LESSON PLAN
Informal Assessment of Student Outcomes What will you assess? Build at least five different rectangular prisms using Uni-fix blocks Draw the three dimensional shapes they have created Record the size of their three dimensional shapes in terms of the number of blocks How will you assess? What evidence will you collect? Photographs Take photographs of the students completed shapes Sketches Collect the sketches of the shapes the students have made
