Getting around
Maribor is the main transport hub for the eastern half of Slovenia, and as such is well-connected by public transport to the rest of country, in addition to Austria, Hungary and Croatia. The main bus and train stations are only a couple hundred metres apart on the eastern edge of the city centre, and well within walking distance of most centrally-located hotels, however, there should be taxis waiting out front if you dont feel like dragging your luggage through an unfamiliar city.

Arriving by Plane
Maribors tiny airport does not currently have any scheduled flights, so unless youll be arriving on a charter flight or your own jet, your best bets are the airports in Ljubljana and Graz (Austria), which are both well-connected to the rest of Europe and near enough to Maribor (100km and 60km respectively) to serve as viable points of arrival.

Arriving by Train
Although the train station has quite a bit of traffic coming and going in all directions, it doesnt have much in the way of facilities. If youre in need of anything other than a toilette or a quick drink, youll have much more luck at the nearby bus station.

The main bus station is either an architectural icon or eyesore depending on ones taste, but either way, its centrally located and has a range of facilities from information and lockers to restaurants and a casino. The city is fairly well-covered by local buses with tickets costing 1.10/2.75 for single rides/day passes and can be purchased from drivers.

(+386) 51 610 133, zdr.zaekokmet.svslovenije@gmail.com. Just because organic products never really went out of style in Slovenia, doesnt mean that local farmers and craftsmen cant capitalise on there ever-increasing popularity. Every Friday and Saturday health-concious locals flock to Glavni Trg to stock up on ecologically produced goods sold from a ring of movable wooden carts. Its also a great place to pick up some uniquely Slovenian gifts, such as a wax-sealed bottle or two of medica - a sweet honey-based liqueur that our friends abroad always seem happy to receive. QOpen , Fri 09:00 - 14:00, Sat 08:00 - 13:00. Mariborska Trnica (Maribor Market) D-2, Vodnikov Trg 5, tel. (+386) 2 251 87 28, trznica-mb@triera.net. The small sloping Vodnikov Square is a strange combination of tradition and modernity. While recent renovations have added a large underground parking garage and a canopy of bizarre-looking inverted umbrellas, its also home to Maribors central market - where farmers from the countryside still come to peddle their fruits, vegetables, flowers and handicrafts each and every day. Even if youre not looking to buy anything its worth a visit on purely aesthetic grounds. QOpen 06.00 - 15.00.

Maribors Lent waterfront along the river Drava

Jurij Pivka (www.maribor-pohorje.si)

With one of the countrys biggest and best ski resorts only a few minutes drive from the city centre, Slovenias second city Maribor is a top destination for both foreign visitors and Slovenes alike during the winter season. In mid-January the city hosts the prestigious Zlata Lisica (or Golden Fox) Audi FIS Womens World Ski Championship, which draws competitors and spectators from around the world, and engulfs Maribor in a citywide party atmosphere. Thanks in part to its 47 years of experience hosting such a major sports event, Maribor has also been chosen as the site of the 26th Winter Universiade in 2013. In addition to the various ski and sports activities on offer, the winter season is a great time to visit for a multitude of other reasons, not least the annual Christmas festivities in and around the Old Town, as well as New Years celebrations with requisite concerts, street parties and fireworks display to ring in 2011. The citys cultural credentials are also not in doubt, as it has been named one of Europes capitals of culture for 2012. Of course Maribor is also the capital of one of Slovenias major wine growing regions, and although the grapes have now long been picked, the winter and spring months are the best time of year to go wine tasting at the countless vineyards scattered around the countryside. Before setting off on such a trip, those unfamiliar with the region would be well advised to stop by the Old Vine House, located in the historic Lent district along the riverside. Named for the worlds oldest vine, which even after 400 still bears grapes, the premises include a museum on the history of wine production in the region, and a small but well-stocked wine shop, whose friendly knowledgeable staff will gladly make recommendations and help you plan your tour. As Maribors most famous librarian (and part-time poet) Janko Glazer once elegantly put it: Where is there a town like ours? From all directions wine is pouring into our glasses! Where indeed.

As Maribor continues its transformation from the countrys industrial workhorse to a full-fledged tourist destination, its range of accommodation has obligingly followed suit. Although a few uninspired and overpriced business hotels still stubbornly cling to their glory days, great new options keep popping up all the time and many older places have undergone recent renovations, so finding something to fit your budget shouldnt be much trouble. The highest density of accommodation is in the suburb of Radvanje at the foot of the Pohorje ski and recreation area, only a ten minute drive from the city centre. If you are interested in taking advantage of the various year-round activities that the mountains have to offer, a number of hotels can arrange package discounts. For those with their own transportation, there are tons of charming little guest houses in surrounding villages and the countryside, most of which provide a comfortable laid-back atmosphere and good homecooked food.

Pri Florjanu Grajski Trg 6, tel. (+386) 225 14 842, grajski.trg@triera.net. Opposite the castle on the funnel-shaped Grajski Trg, this caf-cum-Mediterranean restaurant has a comfortably stylish interior covered in earthy purples, browns and reds, and an outdoor seating area that takes up a good amount of real estate right on the square. An ample selection of both cakes and magazines are on hand to help pass the time, while vegetarians may want to consider staying for lunch as the menu here is one of the few in town with more than a token amount of meat-free dishes. The owners of Maribors trendiest restaurant definitely know what theyre doing. From the lighting to the service to the food this place exudes a cosmopolitan ambiance that youd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the country. Of course all that style doesnt come cheap. Although some la carte dishes will set you back less than 10, the often changing multi-course menus can cost up to four times that - or six if you opt to have a matching wine for every dish - and require advanced booking. Highly recommended if you feeling like splurging or are in town with a company credit card. QOpen 11:00 - 22:00. Closed Sun. (6-45). PTJA6UEGBKSW Villa Rustica H-2, Majcigerjeva 36, tel. vegetarians would be well-advised to give this Serbian place a wide berth, while meat-lovers will want to circle it on their maps. If youre like us and have a tough time deciding on any one thing, there are some good sampler menus offering a sizeable taste of several different dishes. Dont forgot to order a side of fresh-baked Lepinja (a tasty flat bread) to go with your plate of meat. Sightseeing
Most of the citys historical sites - churches, monuments and an oddly large number of free-standing towers - are concentrated in a relatively small area that makes up the old town centre, which means that half a day and a good pair of walking shoes is all you should need to cover most of the main sites. However, with inviting cafs and ice cream shops every few metres, a couple of large parks that reward aimless wandering, and lots of photogenic old villas to the north west of the old town, you could spend the better part of a week exploring and still find something new around every corner.

sightseeing Pohorje
Pohorje The mountain range just outside Maribor attracts skiers by the
thousand during the winter, and is one of the regions most popular destinations during warmer months as well, with its primal forests, waterfalls and lakes a paradise for nature-lovers. Such is the richness of flora and fauna here that the area attracts a good number of nature experts along with the tourists - keep your eyes peeled and you may be able to spot the largest butterfly in Europe. The area can be explored equally as well on foot or by bike and there is no shortage of restaurants and cafs to stop for a break or bite to eat. Theres also a cable to the top if youd like to enjoy the views without the hiking.

Culture & Events

The citys historical legacy as a prominent regional powerhouse has left it wellendowed when it comes to cultural sites and events - a fact that hasnt gone unnoticed, as it was recently named as one of the EUs Capitals of Culture for 2012 as well as the host of the 26th Winter Universiade games in 2013. www.patricks-pub.robot.si. Now that Maribors first Irish pub finally ended its sacrilegious sponsorship by a Scotch whisky we have no qualms with the place not that the inconsistency ever seemed to bother the crowds that pack in here on a nightly basis. While its been doing its small part to help reinforce stereotypes of the Emerald Isle for over a decade, it didnt officially receive its pub credentials until it added a kitchen back in 2006. Doesnt look much like a castle in the traditional sense - more like a rather grand administrative building - but this is largely due to the fact that it has gone through more than its fair share of modifications since the original Gothic structure was built in 1555 as a noble residence. Renaissance-style fortifications were added in the 17th century, along with the southern faade, and the 18th century saw the current staircase installed. Now, it is home to the Regional Museum of Maribor, which boasts an impressive collection of artifacts from around the area. QOpen 09:00 - 16:00, Sun 09:00 - 14:00. Closed Mon. north of the city centre is definitely one of Maribors best features. With its three ponds teeming with many different species of bird and a terrapin or two in amongst them - who started life in the nearby and popular aquarium - and highly sociable squirrels up and around the trees, there is much to keep nature lovers occupied but this is also the citys best place to relax. On Sundays you might catch a classical music concert held in the pavilion right smack in the middle of the park.

This is no coincidence, as it was Slomek who was responsible for the transfer of the Lavantine diocese to Maribor in 1859. The bishop also holds the distinction of becoming the first Slovene saint - an honour that Pope John Paul II personally proclaimed on a visit to Maribor in 1999. Aside from religious activities, Slomek was also a fervent supporter of the Slovene language, and is largely credited with having founded the primary school system in Slovenia.

Used to be a bakery serving the needs of the Yugoslavian army, hence the name (which is Slovene for bakery) but now the local grungy types come here to act up and swill beer, which at 1.50 a throw is some of the cheapest in town. Prides itself on its independent, anti-establishment spirit where young artists can have a go and see what comes out. This is apparently why there are potraits of native Americans and totem poles in and around the place. RLGB

Where the oldest vine in the world can be found winding its way up the front of the building, the house is now a museum dedicated to teaching visitors all there is to know about the wine culture of the Styrian region of Slovenia. At 400 years of age the vine has claimed its rightful place in the Guinnesss Book of Records and still bears the Zametovka or Blue Franconian grape, one of the oldest wine types in the country. The museum offers guided tours and also boasts an unparalleled collection of Styrian wines, which can be bought at a very generous discount. vinag.si. One of the largest classical wine cellars in Central Europe is located in, or rather under, the heart of Maribor. Comprised of over 2km of tunnels covering some 20,000m and containing nearly 6 million litres of wine, the place might be too much for some wine-lovers to handle. Dating back to 1836, the cellar began to grow in size and importance with the completion of the Vienna-Trieste railway five years later. Following World War Two the premises became part of a local cooperative, and were expanded and modernised in the years that followed, before being taken over by Vinag in 1960. Nowadays, a modern wine shop and tasting rooms sit on top of the vast underground network, with more than enough varieties to keep you busy for several hours. Group tastings and visits to the wine cellar can be arranged with prior notice. QOpen 09:00 - 19:00, Sat 08:00 - 13:00. Closed Sun.

National Liberation Monument C-3, Trg Svobode. Appropriately located in Trg Svobode (Freedom Square), this recently renovated spherical bronze memorial pays tribute to those gunned down by the Nazis during World War II for rising up against occupation. By walking around the monument you can look at public announcements of the executions of the some 667 people who were condemned to death by the German forces. Erected in 1975, the sculpture is the work of local artist Slavko Tihec, and despite its sombre purpose the good citizenry of Maribor have dubbed the monument Kojak because of its resemblance to a bald head. Plague Column (Kuno Znamenje) D-2, Glavni Trg. Erected in 1743 to
replace an older version, Maribors loveliest monument serves the unfortunate purpose of commemorating the cessation of a plague, which killed over one third of the citys inhabitants between 1680-81. The large monument, designed by Joef traub, dominates Glavni Trg (the main square) and features a golden Mary atop an 8 metre column surrounded by six saints.

Over two days the sports top athletes compete in the Slalom and Giant Slalom, with the combined best score taking home the prestigious Golden Fox trophy. Some 20,000 spectators will be in attendance, with the majority supporting Slovenian favourite and Olympic medalist Tina Maze. In addition to the actual ski competition at Pohorje, the city will host several music concerts and other events, with a festive holiday spirit inviting visitors to stay for the weekend and explore Maribors excellent restaurants, nightlife and cultural offerings.

Since undergoing major renovations and expansion in 2007, the Dveri Pax winery has been collecting London Decanter and other prestigious international awards like they were Pez dispensers. As with most of the vineyards in the tajerska region, they produce a full range of white wines including Riesling, Traminec and, our personal favourite, the autochthonous ipon variety, as well as several reds. Wine aside, the property itself is worth a visit. Hidden away amongst the green hills 20km north of Maribor, a 200 year-old farmhouse serves as the main production facility, while a former Benedictine monastery dating back to 1139 hosts group wine tastings, events and even a small museum. Plans are also afoot to convert the upper floor to guest rooms.
