Welcome to the Hilleberg Tent Handbook 2013!
For many years, we have discussedthe best way tomake it as easy as possible for users tochoose
their Hilleberg tent. This year, we are introducing the Hilleberg Label System, whichgroups our
tents intoone of four Labels, Black, Red, Yellowor Blue. Eachlabel represents a blend of what
we consider the crucial performance attributes reliability, adaptability, ease of use, durability,
comfort and lowweight.
Black Label tents are all season models built with Kerlon 1800 outer tents, and that oer the
greatest strength and the highest degree of reliability, ease of use, and comfort. They are ideal
for all users and all situations.
Red Label tents are made with Kerlon 1200 outer tents, and are our lightest all season tents,
designed for those who need all season function but who need lighter weight more than overall
strength. These models still aord a highdegree of our performance attributes, but, because of
their lighter materials, not as much as the Black Label tents do.
Yellow Label tents are our lightest tents, and are purposefully designed with lightest weight
as the highest priority. Built withvery light Kerlon1000 outer tents, they are suitedfor more pro-
tected terrain in warmer, snow-free conditions. And because they do use our lightest materials,
they sacrice strength, ease of use and comfort for that lightest weight goal. Joining the Yellow
Label group this year is the extended vestibule Anjan GT, in both 2 and 3 person versions, both
of which are amazingly lightweight for so much space.
Blue Label tents are our specializedmodels. Eachis built for a distinct purpose, andis built with
the materials most appropriate to that job.
Nothingchangesintheconstructionor productionof anyof thetentsthemselves. Thisnewsystem
is simply a way to help make it easier for users to select the right Hilleberg tent for their needs.
There are changes within the company, as well. Rolf has handed over the position of Managing
Director of Hilleberg the Tentmaker AB, the heado ce inSweden, toGranSvensk. Granis an
outdoor enthusiast whowas previously withRecall, a global leader ininformationmanagement.
We are excited about the energy and skill set that he brings to our growing company. Rolf will
remaininvolvedinthe company as part of the boardof directors together withRenate, Petra and
Bo Hilleberg, who will continue as Chairman. Petra remains President of Hilleberg Inc, which
handles all business outside of Europe.

company, Hilleberg AB. That same year, while on a ski vacation in the
Austrian Tyrol, Bo met Renate Neuner. Aer a couple of years, the two
hadfalleninlove, married, andshe hadmovedwithhimtoStockholm,
Sweden. Their marriage was the nal, necessary ingredient in the mix
that has become Hilleberg the Tentmaker.
Before Renate, Bos edgling company was primarily a forestry
equipment concern, with tent making as a hoped-for sideline. An avid,
lifelong outdoorsman, Bo was terminally frustrated with tents that re-
quiredpitchingthe inner tent rst andthencoveringit withaloose rain
y that usually displayed the same properties as a kite in the wind. He
envisioneda tent that hadanouter andinner tent that pitchedtogether,
simultaneously but hedidnt havethenecessary sewingskills. WithBo
and Renates marriage, conjugal and commercial became one: Renate
took charge of the sewing while Bo handleddesignandsales, andwith
their combined eorts, the company ourished.
Today, family andbusiness are still inextricably linked. Bois Chair-
man, and is still in charge of design and development; daughter Petra
handles all company business outside of Europe; andBo, Renate, Petra
andher brother Rolf make upthe governingboardof directors clearly,
family synergy continues to beget success.

thanby creatingsomethingnew. BoHillebergestablishedthis protocol
40 years ago when he set out to build a tent that was easier to pitch in
challengingweather. Andwhilehis solutionthelinkedinner andouter
tent construction was bothnovel and pioneering, the innovationwas
the result the solution to the problem not the cause.
Today, Bo still heads our design team all of which are inveterate
all-seasonbackcountry adventurers andhe andthey still seedesign
throughthat function-rst, problem-solvinglens. Boandhis teamspend
a great deal of time inthe tents, inall seasons, somany if not most of
our designs are literally born in the wilderness.
Fromthere, solutions aresketched, drawn, anddigitizedinour CAD
system, and usable prototypes are created. Design then morphs into
development, and every detail and every tent goes through months
and oen years of testing before it goes into production.
Of course, designing a great tent creating an elegant solution to a

canbuildwhat we envision, anddosoat the level of quality we demand,
we own and operate our own, ISO-9001: 2000 certied, manufacturing
facility in Estonia. We also work with a few carefully selected contract
factories, but the hubof our productionprocess is our Estonianfacility,
where we set up, inspect, andapprove the tents before they are shipped.
This interwovendesignandmanufacturingcyclegives us full quality
oversight, andalsolets us seamlessly adopt any designimprovement we
create. Throughout the process, we are testing new materials and tent
prototypes, in both high tech labs and in year-round eld use, and we
are constantly reevaluating our in-line models, as well. All members of
the company take part inthis development systembothby contributing
what they learnfromtheir ownwilderness trips, andby seekingout and
collecting feedback fromour retail partners and other Hilleberg users
fromall over the world.
ManufacturIng
DesIgn
Our design process is equally dependent on
outdoor and indoor efforts. Field testing
and evaluation takes place throughout the
year in all conditions. Similarly, office work
whether CAD patterning, sewing proto-
types, or reviewing data fromthe field tests
is constantly ongoing.

We select the optimal pole length(s) and diameter for each tent
model, and, if necessary, we pre-bend them. 9 mmpoles go into both
our YellowLabel andour RedLabel models because, like these models
Kerlon1000 and 1200 outer tent fabrics, they oer plenty of strengthat
a very low weight. We use stronger 10 mmpoles with our Black Label
tents, since these are designedto handle the most extreme conditions.
Otber mater|a|s
We choose and evaluate the other materials onour tents zippers, guy
lines, pegs, and other ttings with the same rigor we apply to fabrics
and poles.
We use YKK zippers, which we have found are the strongest and
most reliable available.
Our proprietary guy lines are a blendof super strong Vectranbers
and polyester, uniquely interwoven so there is no sheath to separate
fromthe core. They are very light and strong, absorb almost no water,
and have negligible stretch.
All of our tents come withthe appropriate aluminumpegs: extra ro-
bust yet quite light pegs withthe BlackLabel tents; very light andstrong
pegs withthe RedLabel tents; andsuper light but still quite strongpegs
with YellowLabel models.
Smaller ttings areequally well-considered. Thesimplepolymer line
runners will holdtenaciously evenonwet or frozencord, andyet canbe
easily adjusted. The polymer pole clips, pole tensioner cups, the metal
ladder lock buckles on pole and peg tensioners (we use metal because
these buckles must be as strong as possible) and the adjustable peg
loops are all immune to wet and cold, and can be operated easily, even
while wearing bulky mittens.

qualities we demand fromall the materials that we use, and we have
rigorous standards that every material must meet. Such materials are
almost always more expensive, but they also yield a nal product that
substantially outperforms one made with even slightly lower quality
materials. It is that kindof exceptional performancethat is thehallmark
of Hillebergtents. Wearealsoconstantly testingthat performance, from
the strength and durability of our fabrics and poles to the reliability of
our zippers, guy lines, line runners and ttings. We use lab tests and
eld tests, and we are always seeking better material solutions.
Fabr|cs
A tents fabrics are what protects you fromthe elements. In a Hilleberg
tent, thosefabrics must performtoexactingcriteriainanumber of areas,
whichwecheckinthelab, withstandardizedtests, as well as intheeld.
HillebergKerlonouter tent fabrics must meet aspecictear strength,
(see The Importance of Tear Strength on the next page), as well as a
minimumwaterproofness rating, or hydrostatichead,andaminimum
color resistance to light.
While the outer tents fabric keeps the elements out, the inner tent
fabrics must serve to keep the occupants as comfortable as possible.
Our inner tent fabrics are very lightweight and both air permeable and
highly breathable, sothey let moisturevapor escapewhilekeepingactual
water drops frompenetrating.
Alsovital tothe tents performance are its oor fabrics. Ours are not
only extremely waterproof, but are also highly puncture and abrasion
resistant, and will stay exible even in the coldest temperatures.
Pe|es
A high performance tent must have a skeleton worthy of the strength
of its skin. We use DACpoles, because we believe they oer the kind of
superior performance that our fabrics do, and on most models, we use
the DAC Featherlite NSL poles. The section-connecting inserts on the
uucn1cu s1ucu1n cqunts uucn1cu snrc1v. It is that simple. The
stronger thefabriconyour outer tent is, theless likely it is totear because
of bad weather, rough handling, or inadvertent mistakes.
AndHillebergs Kerlonouter tent fabrics arestrikingly strong. Kerlon
1800, used in our Black Label models, and Kerlon SP, used in some of
our Blue Label tents and in our tarps, have a minimumtear strength
of 18 kg/40 lbs and 15 kg/33 pounds, respectively. Kerlon 1200, found
inour RedLabel collection, has a minimumtear strengthof 12 kg/26.5
lbs. Eventhe familys lightest member, Kerlon1000, usedinour Yellow
Label tents, has a remarkable 10 kg/22 lbminimumtear strength. Even
better, this strengthcomes inimpressively lowweight packages. Inreal
life usage in the eld, that combination of strength and light weight
translates into tents that, in our opinion, outperformthose made with
other fabrics.
Tbe S|||cene Cennect|en
In 1975, Bo Hilleberg received a sample of a new, lighter, more water-
proof fabric. WhenBo cut the edge of the sample andtriedto tear it, he
couldnt. The fabric, Bo learned, was coated with silicone, rather than
the usual polyurethane. Andwhile this newfabric was indeedvery light
and waterproof, it was also exceptionally strong. It was exactly what Bo
had been looking for, and our Kerlon fabrics were born.
Not all silicone-coatedfabrics arecreatedequal, however. Our Kerlon
fabricsarecoated, onbothsides, withatotal of threelayersof 100percent
silicone. Certainly they arecompletely waterproof andvery light, but our
process also imparts a strength to the base material that is an order of
magnitudegreater thanispossiblewiththemorecommonpoly urethane
coating process. Perhaps more importantly, our coated Kerlon fabrics
are also far, far stronger than so-called siliconized materials, which
typically employ a coating mixture of silicone and other compounds.
This means that we can start with lighter weight base fabrics and
still produce outer tent materials that are stronger overall, and, in the
case of Kerlon 1800, 1200 and SP, that are stronger than many of the
so-called expedition grade, heavy duty tent materials on the market.

you dry when its wet and comfortable when its warm, to how much

We favor double wall tents not only because they oer the greatest

also because they provide the greater condence of having two layers

so that a broken pole is less likely to compromise the tents integrity,

In general, the more demanding the terrain and/or the weather you are
likelytoencounter, themoreadvisableit istohaveamorerobust tent. The
stresses on a tent in the protected, forested terrain of the Southeastern
United States during the summer are very dierent than those in the
exposedexpanses of Greenlandinnearly any season. Typically, themore
exposedtheterrain, themoreseveretheweathercanbecome, inall seasons.
Andwhile exposed certainly includes highpeaks suchas the Alps, the
Himalayas and the like, it also means almost any terrain where there is
little to mitigate erce extremes inweather. The oenwindy mountains
of Scandinavia, the windswept uplands and high deserts of the United
States, and the moors of the British Isles all fully qualify as exposed.
So, too, domost deserts the Gobi, the Sahara, the Sonoran, amongoth-
ers whose notoriously badweather andsandy, gritty environment puts
enormous strain on a tent. Add snowand ice to exposed think storms
inthemountains or highplains, or glacier travel inany weather andthe
demands onyour tent also increase signicantly.
And the more remote your trips the farther you are away fromthe
possibility of fabricandzipper repair thehigher safetymarginyouneed
and the more durable your tents materials should be made of.
Suchconditions andsituations call for anall seasontent, andfor the
greatest durabilityandcomfort andfor extendedtripsinexposedterrain
ANDsnowuse, heavyorprolongeddesert use, andthelikeourBlackLabel
models arethebest possiblechoice. Thesetents werecreatedspecically
forhandlingthemost challengingconditions, andtheirstrongermaterials
provide welcome extra insurance. And Black Label tents oer the most
