Start server machine and also your client machine. Log into both machines as administrator. Once logged in to server, click start, administrative tools, server manager. Expand roles in the left hand pane. Expand DHCP Server and then expand the server name and then expand IPv4 Right click on scope and select deactivate. This simulates the DHCP being inactive after the server has been restarted.

8. On your client machine click on start and type cmd into the search box and press enter. This opens a command prompt. 9. At the command prompt type ipconfig. This shows the current IP address your client has.

10. At the command prompt type ipconfig /release. This removes the current ip address from the client.

11. Now type ipconfig /renew. This requests a new ip address from DHCP. 12. As there is no DHCP running on the network, no ip address can be found, the client returns an error as it will time out.

13. The client gives itself the ip address 169.254.54.154. This is known as APIPA (Automatic Private I P Address). This gives your PC an IP address in the

range 169.254.x.x when there is no DHCP server available and no default IP address set.

14. Click on start, control panel, network and internet then select network and sharing centre. 15. Click on change adapter settings and then right click Local Area Connection and select properties. 16. Select TCP/ipv4 and select properties 17. 24. On your server right click on scope and select activate

25. Now on your client machine, at the command prompt type the following a. Ipconfig /release b. Ipconfig /renew c. Ipconfig This should now show an ip address within the scope of the DHCP server.

27. This will back up your DHCP in case of errors 28. Now to simulate an error, delete the scope from your server and click yes on the warning box and click yes on the confirmation window.

29. To add the scope from backup click on your machine name and click restore. 30. Browse to the file location of your backup and click ok 31. On the stop services warning box click yes
