Q. Why 5 elements? A. 5 E encompass all variables in illness and health. Q. How are these placed?

A. On a 5 pointed figure with Wood on top followed by Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Q. Sequence fixed? A. Fixed. Q. How are these related? A. Each nourishes the next one Each controls the one alternate to it If Deficient, control becomes Injury

Q. Can an element control/injure as well be controlled/injured?? A. Either one or the other at one time.

Q. When does illness occur? A. When an element passes from control to injury.

Q. Each element has a color and yin and yang organs, right? A. Yes, see simple chart below: KEY Green is Wood, yin LV and yang Gall Bladder Red is Fire, yin HT and yang Small Intestine Yellow is Earth, yin SP and yang Stomach White is Metal, yin LU and yang Large Intestine Black is Water, yin K and yang Urinary Bladder In health: Wood controls Earth Earth controls Water Water controls Fire Fire controls Metal Metal controls Wood In illness: Wood injures Earth Earth injures Water Water injures Fire Fire injures Metal Metal injures Wood

Illnesses arise when control becomes injury. The main reason for that is a yin def in the controlling element

5 element diagnostics work with these 3 Qi dynamics Nourishing Qi Controlling Qi Injuring Qi Nourishing Qi runs all the time whether person is healthy or sick. Controlling Qi runs as long as there is no yin deficiency in any element. Injuring Qi runs when there is yin deficiency in controlling element. At this time Controlling Qi becomes Injuring Qi. All illnesses occur when Injuring Qi begins to flow.

Often conditions seen in real life, or in an image, lead to a diagnosis. Double jointed hands are one example. What do you think is the problem in terms of 5 elements? Study the picture, think it out and then see panel below:

ANSWER: Element involved is LV which rules tendons. For such a degree of hypermotility tendons must be under duress. The only element which can do this to LV is LU. In this case the possible Pattern is LU Injuring LV. Of course this is confirmed with signs and symptoms to support such a conjecture, but the image gives a great clue.

Study the picture. What pathogen does it suggest? Check what is on R thumb and little finger, and L little finger. What would you call such a lesion? What could be the cause of such a lesion? Then see panel below for answer, which pack a small surprise!

ANSWER: A case of frostbite! Cold when in extreme acts as heat, and as heat has caused the blisters. Yin in extreme becomes yang. Treatment: though lesion shows signs of heat, basis is Cold Extreme. To discharge it first AFTER PRECAUTIONS drain it by bleeding ear apex. When that is accomplished, if signs of Cold exist, carefully heat with Ibuki type moxa. Care! Dont use moxa when signs of Heat pre exist.
