RADICAL HEALING OF AN INVALID MARRIAGE!

SANACIN EN LA RAZ DE UN MATRIMONIO NO VLIDO!
Q. 1. Can you explain to me the meaning of a "RADICAL SANATION"? It is my understanding that it has to do with validating a marriage. A. 1. In a situation where a Catholic and a non-Catholic (or sometimes a Catholic with a negative attitude toward sacramental marriage) had a civil marriage (e.g. before a Justice of the Peace or in a Protestant Church without a dispensation) because the non-Catholic refused to enter the Catholic Church, nor wanted anything to do with it, the Catholic party can have the civil marriage validated by the Catholic Church. This process, in accordance with Canon Law # 1161 1 is called a - "RADICAL SANATION" - (in Latin... Q. 1. Puede explicarme el significado de una "SANACIN EN LA RAZ"? Es mi entendimiento que tiene que ver con la validacin de un matrimonio. A. 1. En una situacin en la que un catlico y un no catlico (o, a veces un catlico con una actitud negativa hacia el matrimonio sacramental) tuvieron un matrimonio civil (por ejemplo, ante un juez de paz o en una iglesia protestante sin una dispensa) porque el no catlico se neg para entrar en la Iglesia Catlica, ni quera nada que ver con eso, la parte catlica puede tener el matrimonio civil validado por la Iglesia Catlica. "sanatio in radice") which means "healing (or a retroactive blessing) in the root. It can be obtained in cases where there are no existing impediment such as a previous marriage that would require an annulment. A "radical sanation" is the healing of an invalid marriage so that the marriage becomes a recognized marriage in accordance with the Canon Laws of the Church. This is done without a ceremony. To seek or procure, one may either contact a parish priest for assistance or contact the local diocesan Matrimonial Tribunal. After obtaining a "radical sanation", the Catholic party can now receive the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, including the Holy Eucharist during Holy Mass. Canon Law # 1161 1. "The radical sanation of an invalid marriage is its convalidation without the renewal of consent, which is granted by competent authority and entails the dispensation from an impediment, if there is one, and from canonical form, if it was not observed, and the retroactivity of canonical effects." Certain conditions must apply before a "radical sanation" can take place. They are: A. Both parties must have the intent of persevering in their conjugal life (be in a healthy relationship). Otherwise a "radical sanation" cannot be granted. Canon Law # 1163 1. "A marriage which is invalid because of an impediment or a defect of legitimate form can be sanated provided that the consent of each party perseveres." B. Both parties (a) must have consented to the marriage (b) at the same time. This simultaneous consent had to include all the essential requirements of a valid marriage (e.g. monogamy, fidelity, permanence and openness to children). This consent must still exist at present unless one party has indicated otherwise. Canon Law # 1162 1. "A marriage cannot be radically sanated if consent is lacking in either or both of the parties, whether the consent was lacking from the beginning or, though present in the beginning, was revoked afterwards." C. Any impediments that are present must be taken care of. In many cases, such is achieved by obtaining a "radical sanation". When marrying outside the Catholic Church, such as before a Justice of the Peace, the marriage was invalid because of a "Defect of Form". That means that the parties failed to obtain a dispensation from the Bishop for a marriage ceremony outside of the Catholic Church. Some impediments cannot be dispensed. For example, if one of the spouses was married before and a decree of nullity (annulment) has not been obtained, then the previous marriage is still valid. If the previous spouse has died, then the impediment has been removed and the "radical sanation" can proceed. Canon Law # 1163 2. "A marriage which is invalid because of an impediment of natural law or of divine positive law can be sanated only after the impediment has ceased." D. In a situation where the non-Catholic spouse would get extremely upset over the process of a "radical sanation," for the sake of peace, he/she does not have to be told. The "radical sanation" process can be granted in secret. There has to be a serious reason for this rule to apply, not just a supposition of a reaction. Canon Law # 1164 "A sanation can be granted validly even if either or both of the parties do not know of it; nevertheless, it is not to be granted except for a grave cause." E. A "radical sanation" is normally granted by the local Bishop. Canon Law # 1165 2. "The diocesan bishop can grant a radical sanation in individual cases even if there are several reasons for nullity in the same marriage, after the conditions mentioned in canon 1125 for the sanation of a mixed marriage have been fulfilled. He cannot grant one, however, if there is an impediment whose dispensation is reserved to the Apostolic See according to the norm of Canon 1078, 2, or if it concerns an impediment of natural law or divine positive law which has now ceased." F. The most important of all the aforementioned, the Catholic party applying for the "radical sanation" is to declare that he/she will remain a Catholic and he/she will do all what he/she can in his/her capacity to ensure the children are baptized and brought up in the Catholic faith. Canon Law # 1125 1/ "the Catholic party is to declare that he or she is prepared to remove dangers of defecting from the faith and is to make a sincere promise to do all in his or her power so that all offspring are baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church."

Si el cnyuge anterior ha muerto, entonces el obstculo ha sido removido y la "sanacin en la raz" puede continuar. La Ley Cannica # 1163 2. "El matrimonio nulo por un impedimento de derecho natural o divino positivo slo puede sanarse una vez que haya cesado el impedimento." D. En una situacin en la que el cnyuge no catlico saldra muy molesto por el proceso de "sanacin en la raz" , por el bien de la paz, l/ella no tiene que ser informada. El proceso de "sanacin en la raz" se puede conceder en secreto. Tiene que haber una razn de peso para esta regla se aplique, no slo una suposicin de una reaccin. La Ley Cannica # 1164 "La sanacin puede tambin concederse ignorndolo una de las partes o las dos; pero no debe otorgarse sin causa grave." E. Una "sanacin en la raz" se concede normalmente por el obispo local. La Ley Cannica # 1165 2. "Puede ser concedida por el Obispo diocesano en cada caso, aun cuando concurran varios motivos de nulidad en un mismo matrimonio, cumplindose las condiciones establecidas en el can. c. 1125 para la sanacin de los matrimonios mixtos; pero no puede otorgarla el Obispo si existe un impedimento cuya dispensa se reserva a la Sede Apostlica conforme al can. c. 1078, 2, o se trata de un impedimento de derecho natural o divino positivo que ya haya cesado." Families who qualify to be recipients of funds for tuition assistance must be parishioners of St. John the Baptist Parish and attend church at St. Johns weekly. Donations may be given in Honor of or in Memory of a loved one, and, from a donor or from anonymous. 9:00 a.m. in front of Planned Parenthood The Knights of Columbus, Blanchette Assembly, will be sponsoring a unique Pro Life event called Bike for Life. The event will consist of a double Rosary and bicycle journey/pilgrimage through the side streets of Aurora and Naperville, kicked off with a Rosary/Divine Mercy Chaplet in front of Planned Parenthood in Aurora at 3051 E. St. John the Baptist Grade School Masses

This year our grade school Masses are held on Wednesdays at 1:40 p.m. We are doing this for several reasons: so parents who arrive early to pick up their children may be able to join us, as well as optimum learning time for children is in the morning and we wish to give our grade school children the best to facilitate their learning. This year when we do not have a Key Liturgical Feast we will be focusing on our patron, St. John the Baptist, in scripture, as our Diocese is also focusing on Saints this year. We would also like to extend an invitation to all parishioners to join our grade school children in the Holy Eucharist.

Friday Morning Bible Study

Beginning September 6 Friday morning Bible study will begin again on September 6. Most Fridays, we meet in Sebahar Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. For our first meeting, due to Good Old Days, we will meet in the Youth Ministry room above the parish garage. You may enter through the parish office and be directed to the Youth Ministry room. This year we will be studying Samuel 1 and 2 and 1 Kings. Come and learn the history of our ancestor, David, and the Kingdom of Israel. There are great stories in these books! We also make time for fellowship and refreshments. Please consider joining us. Bridge Communities As noted in previous bulletins, St. Johns has partnered with Bridge Communities for many years! You will recall Bridge is a not for profit organization based in Glen Ellyn which helps families in need get back on their feet. Bridge Communities provides housing, mentoring, educational opportunities, tutoring, and activities, just to name a few services. St. Johns Parish contributes $650 a month to enable a family to pay their portion of the rent. This week we will take up a second collection for Bridge. If you are unable to make a donation at this time, when the time is right, please place a donation in an envelope with Bridge Communities written on it. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!

A Letter to Preschool Moms & Dads Dear Moms & Dads of Preschoolers, Youve selected a preschool for your child; they are signed up for soccer or baseball. These take care of their physical and intellectual development, but how about your childs spiritual development? Do you want your child to learn more about God, their faith? WE CAN HELP! St. John the Baptist Church offers Preschool Religious Education each Sunday morning during the 9:30 a.m. Mass through the school year. It is held in Sebahar Hall which is right below our New Church. Our program includes stories, crafts, games and songs, all with the goal of sharing our Catholic Faith with your child. It is staffed by adults and teens that have a passion for sharing their faith with preschool children. Faith Education For Inspired Adults These are open classes offered to any adult of any faith or church. The purpose is to inspire your faith and inform it in ways that are exciting. All classes are in Sebahar Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursdays unless otherwise noted. The Greatest Hits of Genesis- September 19th- This is a class that explains Genesis in one hour introducing the main points and people. Need a Little Wisdom and a Splash of Proverbs-September 26th- Neither of these books are in Protestant Bibles. Come discover the great intelligence found in these ancient books. Do you know Deuteronomy? October 3rd- This book has Moses talking to his followers after the Exodus and just about to cross into the homeland of Israel. What did Moses have to say to his followers? Mark the First Gospel- October 10th- Who wrote the first Gospel and what is unique to this Gospel? This is a great class to learn the basics of the New Testament for beginners. Paul Texts the Corinthians- October 17th- Paul writes one of the most inspiring definitions of what a church should be in this great letter to a fledgling church. The 16th Century and Its History- Oct. 24th- In this Century you have Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, Henry the VIII, The Borgias and Ulrich Zwingli. This century shaped religion for the entire world for the next 5 centuries Catholicism and Mexico -Nov. 7th- What is unique in the traditions of Catholicism and Mexico? Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Christero wars are examples of the topics.

The Good Old Days parade is Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:15 P.M. beginning on Sunnyside. The Adult Choir has begun rehearsals and we would like to encourage you to come and join us. If you are in high school, we would like to invite you to investigate singing with the choir. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. and the Choir will be singing at the 9:30 Mass on Sundays in September. St. John the Baptist Council of Catholic Women

Dear Women of the Parish:

On September 10th we begin our meetings and activities. We invite you to join us and become as involved as you choose. All women of St. Johns are really members of the Council of Catholic Women, but by joining and paying dues, you can vote on how we disburse any funds raised, as well as help decide the activities we sponsor. As women we know you are busy with families, jobs and volunteer work. You may not always be available to attend our meetings, work at a fund-raiser, or help with hospitality for the parish when needed. However, it is nice to get to know more than the faces of some of the women you see at Mass or our activities, by becoming one of the CCW ladies, choosing your level of involvement. Below is a list of upcoming meetings and activities planned in the next few months. Stop by any of these to get to know us. You can send in a dues payment with the Pink envelope that was included with the July-August Parish envelopes. Any envelope will do, just include your name, address, phone number and email, if you like, and drop off at the parish office or in the collection basket. Indicate CCW on the envelope. Dues have traditionally been $5.00, but any amount paid will be appreciated.

Tues. September 10 6:30 p.m. Potluck Dinner followed by: "Celebrating the Year of Faith." ..The "Door of Faith" is opened at one's Baptism, but during this year, we as Catholics are called to open it wider, walk through it, and rediscover and renew our relationship with Christ and His Church. Come and hear Ann Krueger share with you four or five ways which may be helpful to you to open your door of faith wider, and rediscover the joy of knowing and celebrating our Catholic faith. Our CCW General meeting will follow dinner and the speaker. For the potluck, CCW will provide Pulled Chicken sandwiches and beverages. Ladies are asked to bring a salad, side dish or dessert.

Scholarship Opportunity-The McShane Family Hispanic Scholarship Fund

An Oak Brook family has agreed to partner with the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) to support needbased scholarships benefitting the growing Hispanic community. The McShane Family Hispanic Scholarship Fund will ensure that 16 students will be able to register at a Catholic school in the Diocese of Joliet this coming school year. Steve and Kathy McShane and daughter, Erin Lacroix, have made a multi-year financial commitment to the diocese. They are members of St. Isaac Jogues Parish, Hinsdale, and Steve is founder and CEO of Willowbrook based Midtronics, Inc. The McShane Family Hispanic Scholarship Fund will fund 16 Catholic grade school students each year for the next three years. The awards will be based on financial need and will adhere to the current processing policy used by the CEF. These are great kids who had little to no chance of receiving a Catholic education without external help, said Joe Langenderfer, Executive Director of the Catholic Education Foundation. Each year over 2,500 students apply through their schools and the CEF for grade school and high school financial aid. Last year the CEF was able to distribute nearly $1.6 million to 1,540 students who demonstrated a financial need through the FACTS Grant and Aid Company, an impartial assessment firm used by the CEF. The Catholic Education Foundation has awarded over $14 million in scholarships since 2003. Families must apply to be considered. Having Surgery?
Give one of our priests a call PRIOR to your surgery, so that anointing can be given at a time when you are less stressed. Call the parish office at 630-6680918, ext. 600, and set a time to come in BEFORE your surgery for anointing.

Hospital Visits
Our priests are available to make hospital visits. Because of HIPAA Laws the Hospital does not notify churches when parishioners are there. Please notify the Saint Johns Parish Office when a loved one is there giving us the name and room number. We want to do our best to minister to all the Hospitalized!

Wedding Information
Getting married? Give us a ring! Please contact one of the parish priests as soon as you become engaged and at least six months before the wedding date. Catholics need to be attending church every Sunday.
