Evolution of Type Tested Assemblies (TTA) in East & Central Africa

1970-1985 Fused Switchboards manufactured in Kenya

The East African market was influenced by the British Standards . The Switchgear and the installation practices were based on the BS and IEC International Standards. The convergence of the market from Fused Switch to MCB/MCCB/ACB was slow in the initial stage but with the marketing efforts and competitively priced product the transformation was done in less then a decade. The transition from Zero point technology to current limiting technology for MCB is happening slowly due to the price differential and lack of awareness and implementation of current KBS / IEC International standards.

Welded frame structure. English Electric Fuse Switch Boards Insulator support made from Bakelite. No compliance to any standards. Design derived from the supplier of the materials. Copper bars punched and bent manually.

1984 -1986 Transition from Fuse Switch to MCCB. Beginning of PTTA Switchboards.

1985-1999 MCCB Switchboards (PTTA)

Bolted frame structure. ACB/MCCB for incomer as well as out goers. Insulator support supplied by Merlin Gerin in compliance to IEC International standards. Design derived and simplified from that of the supplier of the materials. Copper bars punched and bent manually with semi automatic machines. Busbars painted to identify the phase colours.

Bolted frame structure. ACB / MCCB Switchboards Insulator support using pin & comb types as per suppliers recommendation. No strict compliance to any standards (KBS Standards were in draft stage) Design derived from the supplier of the materials. Copper bars punched and bent with semi automatic process and painted .

1985 1999 Transition to modular construction in Motor Control Panel and Switchboards (PTTA)

Road blocks to Development of Standards and its implementation

There is still a poor following of Standards, Safety and Quality leading to the non compliance of KBS / IEC International Standards. The technical auditing for compliance is still voluntary. There is no mechanism to penalise the manufacturers of sub standard and poor quality non complying switchgear product which can be fatal in the installation. Awareness and demand of compliance to the IEC International Standards from the Multinational corporate customers is assisting in the implementation the Standards. As a result the manufacturers have to study and comply to IEC International Standards. Training and attachment for the University students/lecturers in the specialised fields is opening new avenue for the growth for the electrical industry. Need and Awareness of the IEC / KBS Standards in the media as well as institutes of higher learning is assisting in the better understanding of the standards.

What NEXT for KBS /IEC ?

To enhance the IEC standards, and the safety of the equipment to satisfy the consumers of technology, IEC and relevant Standards body must control the Switchboard manufacturing process with a relevant local /international licence to manufacture goods in full compliances with laws of the land. Awareness campaign for the use of TTA for industries as well as commercial installations. Interaction with the consulting engineers to highlight the use of relevant IEC standards for the safety of electrical installations. Linking the Insurance Industry to accept and promote the IEC International Standards with reduced premiums on the installation complying with standards.
