FOLK SONGS FROM NEAR AND FAR
Monday 10 - Thursday 13 February 2014 Tutoring: Sarah Stowe, Matthew Spring
Sara Stowe and Matthew Spring lead a workshop for singers and instrumentalists on traditional songs from around the world. Participants will explore songs that tell of the enduring centuries-old tales of nature, work, love, courtship, suffering, war and travel. The repertoire will include songs going back to Thomas Ravenscroft in the seventeenth century, and folk collections of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including those of Francis Child, Baring Gould and Cecil Sharp. Mathew will also give a public lecture on the twentieth century folk music revial and Sara and Matthew will perform a short recital of Matthews own folk songs, setting words by his late father about Cornwall, where he grew up. This is also open to the public. Admission to both events is included in your course fee. Music with guitar chord symbols will be available but it is not essential to be able to read music

Pete Coopers course is dedicated to introducing fiddlers to a wonderful repertoire of traditional airs and dance tunes. You dont need previous experience of folk fiddling, but you do need to be of at least intermediate standard and to be game for the challenge of learning a range of jigs, reels, hornpipes, strasthpeys and so on by ear. Pete will also teach you how to bow and finger them in the traditional way and will even give you legal copies of the written notes to take away at the end of the course.

ALWAYS A SONG
Monday 2 - Thursday 5 June 2014 Tutoring: K atherine OSullivan
Says our tutor, Kathleen OSullivan: From the Irish singing tradition. Simple, inclusive and practical. A rich variety of material, in what is known as seanns style, at once ancient and timeless. Exploring the nature and poignancy of unaccompanied song, while experimenting with the vocal techniques, timbre, phrasing and ornamentation inherent in this type of native style. Mostly taught by ear, but guided in view of the comfort, confidence, ability and most of all, enjoyment, of the students. Youve just got to come, havent you?

THE SUMMERTIME KLEZMER COURSE

Friday 13 - Sunday 15 June 2014 Tutoring: members of the london klezmer quartet
Following its first visit in December, the London Klezmer Quartet returns for a summertime course designed for instrumentalists (including keyboard players) from all musical backgrounds, classical, folk or jazz. Applicants must be of at least roughly Grade 4 level (no formal qualifications needed), and an ability to read music helps, though its not essential. The LKQs coaching is all about interactive learning. They concentrate on repertoire and attention to melody, accompaniment and ornamentation, and if appropriate will also introduce dance elements to the course. Oral and aural learning methods will help those unfamiliar with it acquaint themselves to the style more quickly though we hope for many return visitors! Putting music into its historical context is an important part of the course, as is the telling of stories of musicians past and present as the LKQ draws us into its wonderful world.
