National Farm Safety & Health Week
September 15 - 21, 2013
Our local businesses remind you to stay safe
year-round by following these basic tips:
Dont allow extra riders on farm vehicles, and never let children ride as passengers.
Always look behind you before starting or backing up farm machinery, especially when
children are present.
Maintain machinery regularly, with particular attention to protective shields,
rollover protectors and seat belts.
Keep chemicals and pesticides safely locked up and out of childrens reach and always follow
label instructions when using these materials.
Know basic frst aid, CPR and emergency response procedures. Make sure everyone on the farm
knows these procedures as well.
Avoid wearing loose clothing that could become entangled with moving equipment parts.
Some areas should be of-limits to children. These include grain bins, silos, manure lagoons,
pesticide storage areas, animal pens and roadways where there is frequent equipment travel.
Wear protective clothing or sunscreen when working for prolonged periods in the sun.
A hat will also help provide sun protection.
Lift heavy items with your legs rather than your back and avoid steep slopes when moving
heavy equipment.
When not using tractors, always make sure they are disengaged by shutting of the power,
locking brakes and removing keys from the ignition before dismounting.

a year - but farm safety needs to be practiced 365 days a year.

Never cut in front of a truck; fully loaded trucks weigh up to 80,000 pounds
and take up the length of a football feld to stop. Most cars weigh only 3,000
pounds.
Dont linger alongside a truck; there are 4 large blind spots around trucks
where cars disappearfrom view and the driver cant see you.
Pass quickly to resume visibility and change lanes only when you can see
both of the trucks headlights in your rearview mirror. Never pass on the
right-the right blind spot runs the length of the trailer and extends out 3
lanes.

Steer clear of front and rear blind spots; stay back 20-25 car lengths and
leave 10 car lengths in front of a truck for safety cushions - following a truck
too closely obscures your view and the driver cant even see you 30 feet behind
the truck.
Allow trucks adequate space to maneuver; they make wide turns at
intersections and require additional space.
To reduce accidents, the American Trucking
Association ofered these safety guidelines
