Lesson: Solving linear equations

Linear and non-linear relationships Solve simple linear equations (ACMNA178) Lesson Outcomes
Students should be able to: 1. Solve simple two-step linear equations algebraically 2. Use method of substitution to check solutions

Prior Learning
Students should have a general understanding of algebra and simplifying algebraic expression invovling addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They should be able to solve simple one step linear equations either by inspection or inverse operations. Students should also be familiar with changing inverse operations and the concept of equivalence from previous lessons on subject of formula. Lesson Steps: TIME 11.22 - 11.27 5 mins ACTIVITY Mental Students to attempt mental questions on the board. Questions will focus one-step linear equations. Solutions to be discussed as a class and will serve as an introduction to linear equations, inverse operations and method of substitution. Solving two-step linear equations Teacher to introduce linear relations by using both Prezi and YouTube presentations. Students to make connections between graphical representations and mathematical equations. Concept of equivalence and inverse operations to be explored. Students to attempt further as presentation progresses, solutions to be discussed as a class. Students to copy notes as necessary 11.47 - 12.12 25 mins Independant work Students to complete Exercise 5.1 from the textbook. Students may also use this time to ask questions individually. Closing Teacher to extend questions to linear equations involving variables on both sides of the equation. Class discussion involving modelling and possible steps to achieve solution. Textbook iPad Projector Presentations: - Prezi - YouTube Whiteboard MATERIALS
