J
amaican American singer Sean
Kingston has settled a gang
rape claim with a 22-year-old
woman out of court.
Kingston reportedly settled
the case with Carissa Capeloto,
who was suing him for allegedly
gang raping her in his hotel room
following a performance at a
Justin Bieber concert in 2010.
Capeloto accused Kingston,
a former bodyguard of his and a
band member of taking advan-
tage of her while she was obvi-
ously intoxicated (and) incapable
of consent. She said the alleged
assault occurred after he invited
her to his hotel room for what she
thought was a post-concert meet-
and-greet.
Police had cleared Kingston
of criminal charges but Capeloto
filed a civil suit recently for $5
million.
Kingstons camp said the
singer settled because he does
not have time for a trial due to his
upcoming tour and album release
and its by no mean an admission
of guilt.
Still despite the settlement,
Kingston is still running into
trouble from the lawsuit. The
University of Western Ontario
canceled his Sept. 7 performance
for their orientation week
because of a zero tolerance for
sexual assault.

Good leaders understand themselves
Forget any military strike -
American needs the resources!
What I am looking for is not out there;
it is in me. (Hellen Keller)
G
ood leaders understand themselves. As a
leader, you need to know your capabili-
ties. What can you do? What are your
strengths? What are your weaknesses? Will
your weaknesses hinder your ability to be a
good leader? Or will your strengths help you
to excel beyond your potential?
I once meet lady by the name of Betty,
an entrepreneur who wanted advice on keep-
ing her small bakery business afloat. She
contacted me after meeting me at a network-
ing event in Queens, New York. Betty invit-
ed me to her shop, which she shared with a
deli. When I met Betty at her bakery, she was
one of the nicest people you can meet; she
smiled a lot and wanted you to feel comfort-
able.
After greeting me, she offered me cake
and tea and told me her story. Betty is a reg-
istered nurse who decided to be an entrepre-
neur. After being in business for over a year
without profiting, she wanted to know what
she was doing wrong. I quickly recognized
Bettys setback. Betty was a good baker and
had excellent customer service, but she was
not good at marketing and lacked a key skill
to any successful businessthe ability to
sell.
The process and integrative approaches
to the definition of leadership suggest that
individuals can learn the skills and abilities
necessary for a leader. The first step in devel-
oping skills and abilities is to understand
you. The importance of self-knowledge for
leadership may seem obvious. Nonetheless,
many leaders do not have sufficient knowl-
edge about their behaviors and the way they
interact with others. Personal preferences for
certain types of behaviors can also result in
leaders using the same leadership style and
methods regardless of the situation.
Increasing self-knowledge and self-under-
standing can improve your ability to interact
with others, which is fundamental to effec-
tive leadership.
Self-understanding is related to emo-
tional intelligence, which is a theory devel-
oped by Daniel Goleman (2000), suggesting
that people have different abilities to manage
themselves and their relationships with oth-
ers.
To manage yourself, you must have a
relatively high degree of self-awareness,
which includes knowledge about yourself,
such as your personal preferences and reac-
tions to different situations. You also have to
be aware of how you interact with others,
particularly in stressful situations where you
may be emotionally upset. Self-understand-
ing can be improved by reflection and objec-
tive analysis of your strengths and weakness-
es.

T
he government of the United States is
always acting as the policeman of the
world as it seeks to protect American interests
and her allies. It was however, very good
news for us on Tuesday when President
Barack Obama, announced that he would put
plans for a military strike against Syria on
hold.
President Obama accused the government
of President Bashar Al Assad of being respon-
sible for a chemical attack against civilians
just outside the Syrian capital, Damascus, on
August 21. No one disputes that chemical
weapons were used in Syria. The world saw
thousands of videos, cell phone pictures and
social media accounts from the attack,
Obama claimed.
While many people understand and
appreciate US policy of helping to protect
innocent people who are being killed by their
own governments, the USA is not at this time,
in any position to take on the domestic issues
of other countries.
The US has a very large public debt of
$16.805 trillion. The wars in Afghanistan and
Iraq and increasing military expenditures have
been the major contributing factors to our spi-
raling debt. Our debt reminds us that our
resources are limited and is reflective in that
employers in retail and restaurant sectors are
only offering low paying jobs. This puts many
families below the Federal poverty level.
In this type of environment we are unable
to generate high-quality jobs and to make mat-
ters worse; people are facing higher taxes,
while states and cities are cutting back on
social programs including health care and edu-
cation.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, said a
limited military strike to deter Syria from
using chemical weapons would likely cost tens
of millions of dollars, but if past experience is
a guide, that number could be substantially
higher.
A military strike against Syria would cost
millions that could be used to fix our econom-
ic and social problems.
We claim to be dominant and almighty,
yet as of January 2013, $5.6 trillion or about
47 per cent of the debt held by the public was
owned by foreign investors, the largest of
which were the People's Republic of China
and Japan at just over $1.1 trillion each.
Forget any military strike against Syria;
the American people need the resources.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS):
T
he ministry of national security in
Jamaica is actively taking steps to
address the increase in the homicide rates for
the period July and August 2013.
These include accelerating the passage
of relevant legislation, enhancing the mobil-
ity and technical capability of the force,
increasing police checkpoints, among other
measures.
In a report in the House of
Representatives on Tuesday, portfolio minis-
ter, Peter Bunting said, for the period June
30 to August 31, there were 251 murders, at
an average of 4.0 murders per day,
This, he said, represents an increase in
the average daily rate, when compared with
the first half of the year (up to June 29) when
the average daily murder rate was 2.9.
It also represents an increase on the
197 murders that occurred in the correspon-
ding two-month period in 2012, Bunting
stated.
Bunting noted that, to address the
increase in the murder rate, the government
will accelerate the passage through
Parliament of the Criminal Justice
(Suppression of Organised Criminal
Organizations) Bill, more commonly
referred to as the Anti-Gang Bill.
This will be an important weapon in
the prosecution of gang members, who,
under the protection of their criminal bands
have intimidated, terrorized and murdered
hundreds of Jamaicans, Bunting said.
He also informed that the government
will present shortly to Parliament, a Bill to
amend the Maritime Drug Trafficking
(Suppression) Act, to empower the govern-
ment to waive jurisdiction over Jamaican
nationals involved in drug trafficking out-
side of territorial waters.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM)
has called on the international community
to make a valiant effort to help the par-
ties involved in the conflict in Syria to
reach a negotiated political statement.
Following is the full text of the state-
ment: CARICOM Statement on Syria
The Caribbean Community (CARI-
COM) is closely monitoring the rapidly
evolving developments concerning the
two-year civil war in Syria, including the
recent alarming allegations regarding the
use of chemical weapons in that country
and said to have resulted in the deaths of
over 1000 persons including a large num-
ber of children.
CARICOM condemns unreservedly
the use of chemical weapons which is a
gross contravention of international law
including the 1925 Geneva Protocol and
the United Nations Chemical Weapons
Convention. It also expresses its abhor-
rence of any such atrocity which would
add a horrific dimension to an already bru-
tal and bloody civil war.
CARICOM deplores the rising toll on
civilians - over 100,000 persons have been
killed and some 2 million Syrians have
become refugees - and is concerned that
any escalation of the protracted conflict
can lead to a conflagration in a volatile
region as well as exacerbate an already
grave humanitarian crisis and increase the
loss of life.

A
ttorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on Tuesday
announced that his office has reached a settlement
with Sears, Roebuck and Co. over a deceptive refund pol-
icy that the retailer applied to consumers who participat-
ed in its Come Back Cash promotion.
In the promotion, a consumer who purchased mer-
chandise above a qualifying threshold amount was
given a $10 or $20 promotional award card. However, if
the consumer later returned some of the merchandise,
Sears reduced the refund by a pro-rated amount of the
value of the award card, even if the cost of the unreturned
merchandise remained above the qualifying threshold
and/or if the customer did not cash in the award.
The company has agreed to pay $150,000 in fines
and has already reformed the policy. The multi-national
retailer, headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, oper-
ates 45 stores in New York.
This settlement ensures that consumers who partic-
ipate in a promotion of this type and later return mer-
chandise will receive a full and fair refund and not a
penny less, Attorney General Schneiderman said.
Sears refund policy improperly reduced refunds to cus-
tomers whose purchases stayed above the qualifying
threshold in the promotion, or whose promotional award
card had already expired without being used.
The Attorney Generals investigation revealed that
there were a total of 25,998 transactions involving New
York consumers whose refunds were improperly reduced
and that Sears reduced the refunds issued to those con-
sumers in the total amount of $82,825.62.
Sears cooperated fully with the Attorney Generals
investigation and changed its return policy prior to reach-
ing a formal settlement with the Attorney General.
For information about a wide range of consumer
issues, see the Attorney General's web site at
www.ag.ny.gov. To file a complaint, individuals are
directed to call the Attorney Generals Consumer
HelpLine at (800) 771-7755.

Antigua triathletes
launch heart disease
campaign
ST JOHNS, Antigua -- A campaign to edu-
cate athletes here about underlying heart
conditions that can result in sudden death is
being undertaken by AUA Tinman Rohr
Triathlon organizers and the American
University of Antigua.
Two years ago the local triathlon and
AUA community were shocked when with-
out warning and despite being in near per-
fect health, 25-year-old Jonathan Rohr
passed away suddenly in his sleep.
The athlete was posthumously diag-
nosed to have hypertrophic cardiomyopa-
thy (HCM) - a genetic heart disease which
affects 1 in 500 people and has been known
to result in sudden death in extreme ath-
letes. HCM is difficult to detect and dif-
ferentiate from the common athletic heart.
The failure to correctly diagnose the differ-
ence leaves an affected extreme athlete in a
Russian roulette scenario... risking suicide
by athletics, said his father, John Rohr.
The most common cause of sudden death
among young athletes is hypertrophic car-
diomyopathy.

Manning brothers
to collide in NY
A record-setting performance has Peyton
Manning and the Denver Broncos flying
high as they roll into MetLife Stadium. Eli
Manning can't say the same as he and the
New York Giants look to get back on track
after a disheartening season-opening effort
against Dallas Cowboys.
This match sets up the third installment
of the "Manning Bowl" as Peyton looks to
improve to 3-0 against his brother Sunday,
September 15. "Hopefully when I think
back on these games that we've played
against opposing teams with my brother, I
can think and remember at least one win."
stated Eli.
The Giants have won three straight home
games in this series, the last such meeting
coming in 2005. The Broncos won 26-6 in
Denver on Nov. 26, 2009, in the most recent
matchup.

REGGAE BOYZ FALL:
The Reggae Boyz have once again fallen in the FIFA World Rankings. This month's rankings reflect the country's position as
the weakest team on show in the CONCACAF hexagonal phase of World Cup Qualifying. The nation dropped two places over
last month to 78th having not won a match in the final round. That is an aggregate 22 places, having started the year ranked
56th. Qualifying leader, the United States is CONCACAF'S best team, at 13th in the world. They are well ahead of Mexico
which fell a place to number 21. South American team Argentina climbed two places to eclipse Germany for second place
behind world leaders Spain.

O
n September 22, Westchesters premier
and largest arts and entertainment festi-
val will kick off its 12th year.
The festival, which began with a humble
attendance of approximately 3,500 people,
has grown to over 40,000 festival goers.
The Arts on Third Festival began in 1999
as a precursor to Mayor Ernest D. Davis
vision to transform Mount Vernons 3rd Street
into an arts district.
Mayor Davis then formed a task force to
research the development of such an arts dis-
trict. This blue ribbon task force, called the
Third Street Task Force, was composed of
each sector of the community and became the
impetus behind the Arts On Third Festival.
Art was the vehicle used to revitalize the area
as well as a catalyst to usher in social change.
The festival brings together hundreds of vol-
unteers in the largest community effort in
Westchester, New York.
On August 26th, the Arts On Third
Committee and Mayor Davis hosted a suc-
cessful Sponsors Reception which feature the
beautiful works of Diane Monte, great-grand
daughter of renown impressionist Claude
Monte.
In this age of technology, photos are still
the best way to express and tell your story. On
the heels of our 12th year of success, the Arts
On Third committee hosted its first photo
exhibit, featuring the beautiful work of local
photographers, James Fair, James Lattimer,
Dwayne Brown and Harry Mason.
Not only was this event a resounding
success, we can honestly say our amazing vol-
unteers and committee as a whole stepped up
to the plate. These photos showcased the
beauty of a community filled with pride and a
commitment to bring forth the best event
Westchester has ever seen.
Arts On Third features three stages of
amazing entertainment which includes all
genres of music, including Rock, Hip Hop,
Jazz, Gospel and Salsa. With headline acts
such as R&B superstar Regina Belle and
Reggae sensation Mr. Vegas, this years festi-
val is certain to be one of our best.
There will be a Special Birthday
Celebration for Mr. Arts On Third Doug E.
Fresh, who will be joined by his friends Kool
Moe Dee, Pete Rock, Chill Will, Marley Marl,
The Treacherous Three, Bow Legged Lou, CL
Smooth and many other surprise guests. One
of the highlights of talent to hit the big stage
is Billy Mr. Apollo Mitchell, who will host
the annual Arts on Third Amateur Night.
Even with such an amazing lineup it is
still our local talents who have made this fes-
tival the roaring success it is today.

Food Stamp Cuts
Are Underway
Y
ou should know that Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) benefits are scheduled to end on
November 1st.
In the United States Congress, efforts
are underway to cut food stamps - $40 bil-
lion in cuts over the next decade. One
Member of Congress, Rep. Stephen
Fincher (R-Tenn.) who collected nearly
$3.5 million in government farm subsidies
from 1999-2012, defended his support for
cutting food stamps by declaring: The
one who is unwilling to work shall not
eat.
As a pastor and as a Christian, I know
that it is very dangerous to misrepresent
the Bible. Congressman Fincher took a
quote from the Book of Thessalonians and
used it to justify hurting the less fortunate.
As a New York State Senator repre-
senting the poorest area in the United
States of America, I have to say that Mr.
Fincher's statement disgusts me.
It is cruel to think that senior citizens
who often have to decide if they should
pay for medication or buy food to eat, or
single moms or the disabled, or people
who are underemployed and unemployed -
or children -should be labeled as "unwill-
ing to work" and therefore, shall not eat.
Although the well-fed Members of
Congress and their families will not suffer
under these food stamp cuts, people and
families who live and work in my district
here in the South Bronx will go hungry.
The poor will be punished.
You should know that there are
always instances of fraud or waste in
almost every government program that
exists, but this is not the way to curb fraud
or waste. These proposed cuts to food
stamps are indiscriminate and everyone
who relies upon food stamps will suffer.
No one seems to want to talk about
this because there is too much going on in
the country. Syria and the elections and so
many other things have captured our atten-
tion - but vulnerable and hungry people
should not be ignored.
My dear reader, I wish there was a
way to extend an invitation to
Congressman Fincher to visit the South
Bronx and to meet some of the families
here who will be impacted by these bar-
baric proposals.
More importantly, I would like to
challenge the Members of Congress who
represent New York, the Bronx, and the
South Bronx, to start some kind of
National Action effort to oppose cuts in
food stamps. I urge New York's
Congressional delegation - especially the
Black and Hispanic Members - to use the
floor time they provide for you in the
Congress to speak about the children and
families who live and work in our commu-
nities and how they will suffer under these
outrageous food stamp cuts.
I urge all of New York's Mayoral can-
didates during the next few weeks to use
their campaigns to speak up about this
issue that will affect many New Yorkers.
Ladies and gentlemen, time is not on
our side. These issues are being quietly
debated in the Halls of Congress this
month. If enough people don't speak up,
many people will suffer.

W
ith so much attention focused on the
Democrat primary for New York
City Comptroller, the media largely over-
looked the biggest star -- and only minori-
ty -- in the race: Republican John Burnett.
Burnett embodies the American
Dream. He grew up in East New York and
Jamaica, Queens and went to work in
finance without a college education.
While working his way up the corporate
ladder, he earned his college degree from
NYU at night.
He eventually led a division at a
major bank and earned an MBA from
Cornell University.
Burnett has the experience and skills
required to manage New York City's
finances. His opponent, Democrat Scott
Stringer, is a career politician who has
been on the taxpayer dime his entire adult
life.
The job of the New York City
Comptroller is to manage the City's $140
billion pension fund: that's retirement
money for our teachers, police officers and
firefighters. The Comptroller needs to be
the financial equivalent of an NFL Pro-
Bowl quarterback. Scott Stringer wouldn't
make it in a powder puff league.
On Tuesday, Democratic primary vot-
ers presented New Yorkers with the
world's easiest choice.
As the campaign for Comptroller
heads into the general election, keep an
eye on this Republican rising star!

ine high school teams presented mobile
app prototypes and business plans that
focus on improving education and quality of
life in New York City to an expert panel of
judges. Long-time Quirky advisor and direc-
tor of U.S. sales, Andre Zdanow, presented a
keynote on the Quirky model for product
development at the end of the night.
Three teams were chosen to advance to
NYC GenTech's Demo Day on September
19th:
Inspyer U:Prepares and educates young
students for the New York State Math Test by
engaging them with fun, interactive, crime-
solving games. Inspyer U strengthens play-
ers math and problem-solving skills as they
sleuth through leveled scenarios to solve
crimes around New York City.
Mealr: Encourages a healthier lifestyle
in young adults through social competition.
Users of the app can monitor the foods they
eat and water they drink each day with the
food group and water trackers. When users
hit their daily goals, their friends can chal-

New York Department of State
I
f you are at least 17 years old, you may
apply for a Cosmetology license based on:
1) New York State Education and
Examinations (eligible for temporary
license)
You must complete a 1,000-hour, New York
State approved course of study and pass both
the New York State written and practical
examinations to get a license to operate in
this state. As proof of successful completion
of schooling, you must have the Affirmation
of New York State Approved Schooling sec-
tion of the application completed by your
school director.
After your application is reviewed and
accepted, you will receive information that
explains the exam process in detail.
2) Education Outside of New York State (eli-
gible for temporary license)
The Department of State may waive the
New York State schooling requirement if you
can document an equivalent level of school-
ing from another state or country. You must
submit all three of the following documents
(foreign language documents must be accom-
panied by an English translation certified true
and accurate by the translator):
(1) a school certificate;
(2) a school transcript listing subjects and
hours completed;
(3) a current, original Certification of
Licensure from your state board or, if not
licensed, a current Certification from your
state's board verifying the hours claimed.
After your application is reviewed and
accepted, you will also be required to pass
both the New York State written and practical
examinations to obtain a Cosmetology
license in this state. You will receive infor-
mation that explains the exam process in
detail.
3) Experience: 5 Years Outside of New York
State
Any individual having five years of legal
experience in an occupation equivalent to
Cosmetology may apply for a New York
State license by submitting satisfactory evi-
dence of education and experience. Evidence
may include but is not limited to:
(1) original certifications from licensing
agencies and two experience statements;
(2) copies of passports which indicate occu-
pation of individual;
(3) tax returns which indicate occupation;
(4) letters from employers;
(5) practical and written examination results;
and (6) course curricula
Such evidence must be presented in leg-
ible form and in English. If a translation is
provided, it must be certified as true and
accurate by the translator. After your applica-
tion is reviewed and accepted, you may
obtain a Cosmetology license in New York
State without examination or further educa-
tion.
4) Endorsement/Reciprocity
An applicant who holds a Cosmetology
license in another jurisdiction may obtain a
Cosmetology license in New York through
endorsement or reciprocity. Refer to our web-
site www.dos.ny.gov for a Cosmetology
endorsement or reciprocity list to determine
if you qualify for licensure based on endorse-
ment or reciprocity.
An applicant must submit an original
certification from the jurisdiction where s/he
holds an equivalent license.
5) Previous New York State Licensure
An individual who fails to file an applica-
tion and fee for renewal within five years of
the expiration date cited on the individual's
license shall be ineligible for such license
until he/she passes a written exam. Proof of
previous licensure may be required.
What are the fees, terms of licensure?
You may pay by check or money order made
payable to the Department of State or by
MasterCard or Visa using a credit card
authorization form. DO NOT SEND CASH.
Application fees are nonrefundable. A $20
fee will be charged for any check returned by
your bank.
What does the practice
of Cosmetology cover?
The practice of Cosmetology includes pro-
viding the services of natural hair styling,
esthetics, nail specialty and waxing and also
includes providing services to the hair, head,
face, neck or scalp of a human being, includ-
ing but not limited to shaving, trimming, and
cutting the hair or beard either by hand or
mechanical appliances and the application of
antiseptics, powders, oils, clays, lotions or
applying tonics to the hair, head, or scalp, and
in addition includes providing, for a fee or
any consideration or exchange, whether
direct or indirect, services for the application
of dyes, reactive chemicals, or other prepara-
tions to alter the color or to straighten, curl,
or alter the structure of the hair of a human
being.
Who must apply for a Cosmetology license?
Any person practicing Cosmetology as
described above is required by law to have a
Cosmetology license. A Cosmetology license
will not permit you to operate a business; a
separate business application must be com-
pleted and a separate business license
obtained.
Do I need a physical to be licensed?
Yes. You need to be examined by a physi-
cian, physician's assistant or nurse practition-
er to apply for a license in Cosmetology. Your
physician, physician's assistant or nurse prac-
titioner must complete and date the Health
Certification section of the application. You
must submit your application within 30 days
after the certification is signed and dated.

Dare to Care Home for Children With
HIV/AIDS
The Dare to Care flagship home was
established in 2000 in Jamaica to provide
care for twenty orphaned and abandoned
children living with HIV/AIDS, as no
facility existed in the country that catered
to the needs of such vulnerable children.
Today there are three such homes that
have provided loving care to approximate-
ly 100 children, 10 of whom succumbed to
the disease and approximately 20 reinte-
grated with relatives. Most of the children
placed in Dare to Care facilities were left
to die but with treatment and a caring
home Dare to Care children are now living
longer, healthier and normal lives; the
Homes have not experienced a death in the
past nine years.

Reasons Why Women
Should Never Lie to Men
K
eeping it real counts when interacting
with the opposite sex, communication
is everything. Simply put, authenticity is
everything. It's not always easy to be trans-
parent when youre getting to know each
other, but its 100 percent necessary.
Keeping things honest will help you avoid
leading Mr. Wrong or turning Mr. Right off.
Be yourself and be real.
Your Birthday: You never ask a woman
her age. However, when it comes to dating,
this rule must be broken. Dont lie about
your age. If hes turned off, at least you will
know where you both stand immediately.
Lying about your age will instantly make
you seem insecure, especially if youre
older.
How Much You Like Sports: Your inter-
est in sports isn't as important to him as you
think. As long as he can watch the game,
he's fine. You don't have to watch it with
him. If you really arent that interested in his
favorite football or basketball team, it
shouldnt bother him one bit. But if he takes
sports seriously and youre misquoting stats,
butchering player's names and feigning
interest in the score, it will be more annoy-
ing than endearing. He will know if your
interest is genuine or not, so dont fake it.
Your Number: Discussing your sexual his-
tory is always tricky, but it's unavoidable if
things between you are becoming serious. I
know all women won't be in agreement here
but, when it does come up, I say be open and
honest about it. If he asks how many people
you've slept with before him, don't give him
the "safe" number. Give him the real one. If
he can't handle your answer, that's on him
not you.
The Ex-Factor: If your ex is still in the
picture, say so. Its just as important not to
hide a connection to an ex, as it is for him to
reveal any women in his life. As long as you
both keep it real in this department, there
will be no unwanted surprises.
Your Marriage Goals: Most women
assume that talking about marriage will
scare a man off, but thats false. The man
thats right for you will want to know where
you really standespecially if hes on a dif-
ferent path. There is a way to be open about
where you desire to be in the future in terms
of your relationship without putting too
much pressure on the present situation.
Saying you dont want to be married when
you clearly do, will send him running for the
hills.
Your Bedroom Activities: Dont ever tell
a man hes the best youve ever had unless
it's the actual truth. You may want to feed
his ego, but it wont work that way if youre
lying. If you tell him he's the best then he
has no room to improve. Compliment him
but don't overdo it. Hell appreciate it the
realness. -Source: essence.com
Dear Divine:
M
y wife of 10 years, "Michelle," and
I argue constantly. We can't seem
to agree on anything, have few common
interests and don't enjoy our time togeth-
er. Our love life is nonexistent.
We have gone to three marriage
counselors and it hasn't helped. We now
"get along" by avoiding each other.
I think it's time we faced the fact that
we're never going to be happy together.
When I bring this up with Michelle, she
gets angry and launches into the same
old rage, saying if I want a divorce I'll
have to get a lawyer.
Divorce will be difficult and costly
enough without having to drag lawyers
into it. I'd like us to agree that it's time to
split and use a mediator to work out the
details. It will save us a lot of money
and, hopefully, make the divorce less
acrimonious.
I don't understand why Michelle wants
to stay together when she's so unhappy
and we're unable to make things better.
How can I make her see that separating -
- in as kind a way as possible --will be
best for us and the kids included?
-David, Mt.Vernon
Dear David:
Your wife may prefer the evils she's liv-
ing with to the unknown of being a
divorcee with children. However, when
a marriage is over -- it's over. And when
it reaches the stage that yours has, what
both parties need to be most concerned
about is preservation of assets, so they
aren't dissipated in attorney's fees.
I have seen both kinds of divorces -- one
in which the warring spouses spent so
much money in litigation there was little
left for each of them when it was over;
and the other, in which the couple agreed
their marriage was broken beyond repair
and arranged their divorce with as little
cost as possible. I don't have to tell you
which people are doing well now. So
clip this and share it with your wife.
-Always, Divine Diva
Dear Divine Diva:
I
purchased some things at a yard sale
sale. Later, while looking in a piece of
luggage, I found a gold watch (with an
appraisal of $7,000 that was in the same
box) and a string of pearls.
What is the proper thing to do in a
situation like this? The yard sale people
are long gone, but there was a name on
the appraisal. I tried doing a search on
the Internet, but can't locate the person.
Will I have bad luck if I keep these
items? This person must have family
somewhere?
--Finders Keepers?
Dear Finders Keepers?:
If you have exhausted all avenues at
your disposal to find these people, keep
the items with a clear conscience.
-Always, Divine Diva

nfluenza is a viral infection of the nose,
throat, bronchial tubes and lungs. There
are two main types of virus: influenza A and
influenza B. Each type includes many dif-
ferent strains, which tend to change each
year.
When does influenza occur?
Influenza is most common during the fall
and winter months. Flu activity often
increases during the late fall and early win-
ter in the United States, but peak levels gen-
erally occur between late December and
early March. Illnesses resembling influenza
may occur during the summer months but
they are usually due to other viruses.
Who gets influenza?
Anyone can get influenza, but it is most
serious in the elderly, in young children, in
people with chronic underlying health con-
ditions such as asthma, diabetes or a weak-
ened immune system.
How is influenza spread?
Influenza is highly contagious and is easily
transmitted through contact with droplets
from the nose and throat of an infected per-
son during coughing and sneezing.
What are the symptoms of influenza?
Typical symptoms include fever, chills,
aches, cough and sore throat. Intestinal
symptoms, such as vomiting or diarrhea,
are possible but uncommon. Although most
people are ill for only a few days, influenza
sometimes leads to more serious illness,
such as pneumonia. Influenza-related ill-
ness, including pneumonia, causes approxi-
mately 36,000 deaths in the United States
each year. Here in New York City, influen-
za causes an estimated 1,100 deaths, and
respiratory infections cause more than
2,000.
How soon after infection
do symptoms appear?
Influenza generally occurs within 1 to 4
days after exposure.
How is influenza diagnosed?
Doctors diagnose influenza by checking for
common symptoms such as fever, chills,
aches, cough and sore throat. Lab tests are
sometimes used to confirm the diagnosis,
but these tests are not necessary or useful in
most instances.
What should I do if you
I get flu-like symptoms?
Most people recover from flu on their own,
without medical treatment. They dont need
to go to the hospital, but they do need to
take steps to avoid spreading the infection.
If you have a fever (100 degrees or
higher), plus a cough or sore throat, be sure
to take these steps:
Stay home from work or school. Dont
return until you have been free of fever for
24 hours.
Avoid close contact with other people.
Stay away from crowded public places and
avoid close face-to-face contact with house-
hold members.
