Whats the big deal about the Pope? The Pope is the source and guarantor of the Churchs unity. He has the supreme pastoral authority and final authority in doctrinal and disciplinary decisions. All of this stems from Jesus giving Peter the unique position of preeminence among the apostles. This made Peter the supreme authority in the early Church. Every Christian community had to agree with the Bishop of Rome on the standards for the true, complete and unadulterated apostolic faith. The Bishop of Rome, like Peter, is the supreme shepherd of the Church whose real Head is Christ. (From the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church) (Youcat #141)
