Sheet Metal Parameters

In this lesson you will see how to start a Sheet Metal part by assigning the basic parameter needed to create the part.

Defining Sheet Metal Parameters

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

11

Defining Parameters
Before starting to create any Sheet Metal part you will need to define certain Parameters of the part. These are common characteristics that when defined will make creation easier and thus limit your need to supply data during creation of the part.

Parameters Tab

Bend Extremities Tab

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

12

What are Parameters ?

Parameters are the common characteristic used in the creation of the part. They are as simple as stating the dimensional requirement of the material and bend radius

It is important to note here that only one set of parameters can be assigned in a CATPart, therefore you are limited to one part per document.

13

What Parameters need to be defined ?

In order to start there are three basic parameters that need to be assigned, Material Thickness, Bend Radius and Bend Relief Type.

You will learn how to create the 5 basic types of walls offered in the Sheet Metal workbench

Profile wall

Wall on Edge

Extruded Wall

Rolled Wall Pierced Wall

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

19

What are walls ?

To start a sheet metal part you must create some type of wall first to start from. It can be as little as one line that you can extrude a wall from or a complex profile to create many walls from or a profile to make an individual wall. An example of how different ways could be used to create this part is as follows. Wall 1 could have been created first as a flat profile wall and then walls 2, 3 and 4 could have been done as walls on edge Wall 1, 2 and 3 could have been created with an extrude and then wall 4 could have been done as a wall on edge

3 1 2 4

Be aware that where you select edges, top vs bottom will drive a different proposal for your wall from CATIA. For example top may force your wall to go in an upward direction and bottom may force your wall in a downward direction.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

20

When to use the various types of walls ?

The Profile wall is used when you need a wall of a specific shape. Often used as a first wall of a part

The Wall on edge is used anywhere you need a wall on an edge of another existing wall.

You can also select an edge, click on the wall icon and draw the sketch you want

The Extruded walls are used when you want to create a group of walls along a specific profile. Here again it can be used to start to build a simple U shaped chassis or a hat section used to strengthen other parts.

32

Defining Bends for Walls

Bends can be created by four ways. If you choose you can create your bend each time you create a wall on another wall or you can create a bunch of walls that show how your part will look and then use Automatic Bends to create all of them at one time.

Singular Bend

Automatic Bends Bends from flat

Conical Bends

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

33

What are Bends ?

A Sheet Metal part is created from one piece of metal that is cut to the shape needed and folded to create the part. These folds are what we call bends.
Bend

Bend Relief

A Bend Relief is the material cut out that is needed to allow the folding of the part without tearing the material or causing it deform
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

34

When do we use Automatic Bends ?

In V5 the new methodology is to create groups of walls that have a common bend size. Then when you have a group you can create them all at one time and save the steps of having to confirm the direction each time.

In cases where you have non-standard bends then you will have to use the singular bend capability and define direction. Therefore it is important to make sure your standard bend is the most common bend size on your part.

43

What are Flanges ?

Flanges are different ways to form sheet metal into tabs, walls and edges that give functionality, beauty, strength and safety to the part.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

44

When to use the various types of Flanges ?

Regular Flanges are used to create tabs in cut outs and simple flanges around the edges of parts Tear Drops can also serve to create decorative edges as well as create things like hinge pins openings

Hem bends are used to strengthen long thin sheet metal parts and to also supply a smooth safe edge

Swept flanges are used to sweep profiles around exterior edges of parts.

Defining Cut Outs in Walls

In Sheet Metal there are no Holes or Pocket icons as there are in Part Design. Openings in a Sheet Metal part are all done with the Cut Out icon.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

51

What are Cut Outs ?

A Cut Out is any opening in a Sheet Metal wall. It can be anything from as simple as circular hole to a more complex cut out. Be aware Cut Outs can be patterned just as in Part Design

The cut-out can be performed with a open contour sketch.

The Cut Out icon is very similar to the Pocket icon in Part Design and has all of the depth capabilities such as Up to Next and Up to Last Sometimes you will find that after creating a wall that you decide that you need to add additional slots on the exterior of the wall or add notches or chamfers. This can be done with cut outs if you do not wish to go back and modify the wall sketch.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

52

When do we use Cut Outs ?

For any Cut Out in a Sheet Metal part you will use this icon. Some will be as simple as circle, others will be more complex. They will be located in the walls themselves. In some cases you may choose to modify existing edge walls or extruded walls by just using cut outs instead of modifying the original sketch of the wall.

Going to Flat Pattern Mode

When designing a Sheet Metal part you may find times when you need to see the part in its Flattened state for checking or adding physical cut outs.

You can also display the folded and the unfolded views in two different windows at the same time

On the unfolded view, all the bend limits and the foot print stamp are displayed
59

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

What is Flat Pattern Mode ?

Flat Pattern Mode is when you are viewing the sheet metal part in its unfolding condition and in that mode you will see all of the cut outs and edges and how they look with each other.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

Note there are times that you will not see certain things in Flat Mode. For example if a wall does not have a bend assigned to it yet that wall will not be visible. Also some 3D Features, such as stiffeners, will not have any indications in that they exist in Flat mode. All the stamping feature are only visible on the face of the stamp.

60

When should we use Flat Pattern Mode ?

Load the Catia document Unfolded part.CATPart
Flat Pattern Mode should be used when you have Cut Out that will be a part of more then one wall and go through a bend. This then allows you to located it from edges on the flattened view of the sheet. Another use of Flat Pattern Mode is to be able to see where you may have overlaps of walls. Typically this is seen where flanges overlap each other.
Here the flanges meet properly

Defining a 3D Feature
When designing a Sheet Metal part you will find that you sometimes use common 3D Features in your part such as an Extruded hole or a bridge. The CATIA Sheet Metal workbench comes with some of these 3D Features pre-defined for your use.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

66

What is a 3D Feature ?
A 3D Feature is a common piece of Geometry used in creating sheet metal parts. It comes with parameters that can be modified to change its shape or size and sometimes requires a sketch to complete its creation

These 3D features can have holes or cut outs in them.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

What are 2D Flat Views ?

A 2D Flat View is the Sheet Metal part that you have created in its flattened mode. Shown on the view are the bend lines where the folds take place on the part.

The prints stamp are only visible on the face of the stamp

Also note that dimensions can be added to the 2D drawing as needed.

Sheet Metal Modifications to a Part

In this lesson you will see how we can do various modifications to different parameters, walls, bends, cut outs and features of a part.

Modifying Part Parameters Modifying Walls Modifying Bends Modifying Flanges, Cut Outs and 3D Features

Modifying Part Parameters

As we discussed in the beginning of the process these parameters drive how your part is created. If you modify them then all of the items affected will be changed.

Change Material Thickness to 0.6 mm

Change Bend Radius to 3 mm

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

82

What are the Modifications you might perform ?

There are three main parameters that we will discuss in this lesson. In both cases one change can change all of the standard bends, wall thickness or bend reliefs in the part. The first is the material thickness of the part. Somewhere during the design someone may come to you and suggest that you change your material thickness for some reason such as rigidity or weight etc.
From 3 mm thick to 1 mm thick

From Square Relief to no relief

From 0.5 mm R to 3 mm R

The second case is where you may decide that the previously set bend radius needs to be changed.

The third case could be where you wish to modify the type of bend relief that you choose to use.

83

Modifying the Wall Thickness and Bend radii

1
Select the Sheet Metal Parameters icon

Key in a new value of 0.6 mm for the Material thickness and 3 mm for the Bend Radius

Tip: You could select the Sheet Metal Parameters item in the tree also

Tip: Be aware that the wall thickness will modify only in the direction of the original wall thickness. If you wish to change this you must return to the original wall and modify it there.

84

Modifying Bend Reliefs

1
Select the Sheet Metal Parameters Icon

Replace the Square Relief with Minimum With No Relief selection

If you choose this can also be modified in singular cases by selecting the Extremities button in the Bend Definition window

Modifying Walls
As we design a Sheet Metal part we will find that we need to make modifications walls. No matter what the type of wall we will want to modify something about it, shape, length, width etc.

Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

86

What types of modifications can we do to different walls ?

PROFILE WALLS Profile walls should be modified by modifying the original sketch thus eliminating extra items in the tree. This also simplifies locating them for future changes.

WALLS ON EDGE

Edge walls can also have there profile modified to add exterior geometry to them. You can also isolate the edge and shorten it.

87

What types of modifications can we do to different walls ?

EXTRUDED WALLS Modification of the original sketch will change the walls to match.

The original Extrusion used to create the extruded walls can be exploded to create separate walls so each can be modified individually MB3 on Extrusion.1, Extrusion.1 object and isolate

88

Modifying a Profile Wall

1
Select the original wall sketch and the Sketch icon

Modify the geometry as indicated above adding a slot and a chamfer

Return to 3D by selecting the Exit button

The edge slot and chamfer could have been created as cut outs but that would have increased the size of the tree and the document size. Modifying the sketch is better.

89

Modifying a Wall on Edge

Select the original Wall Sketch.3 for the Edge wall and the Sketcher icon

To Isolate the wall from the original edge locate the Mouse over the yellow edge line and use MB3 and select ISOLATE

Now add a width dimension and change it 6 mm

Exit and return to 3D

Likewise here it is recommended that things such as notches, edge slots and chamfers etc be added to the sketch thus eliminating the need for extra items in the tree.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

90

Modifying a Group of Extruded Walls

Select the Sketch that the Extrudes walls were created from

Modify the 20 mm dimension to be 10 mm

Now if you wish to modify these walls by adding notches, edge slots, chamfers etc and maintain the capability displayed here then you must use cut outs to do the modification.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001

91

Exploding Extruded Walls into Single Walls

Select the Extrusion 1 that created the walls

2
Locate MB3 over the Extrusion 1 item in the tree select ISOLATE under EXTRUSION OBJECT

The Extrusion 1 is gone and all walls now have a sketch that can be used as any other wall sketch is used

Once you have done this you can never return to the Extrusion type wall here.

Now if you want to modify the length or width of the wall or add notches, edge slots or chamfers etc. you should do it in the sketches as we did with profile walls

92

Modifying Bends
As you saw earlier you can modify all of the bend radii in a part with a simple modification of a parameter. However, if you only wish to modify one of the many bends on your part then you will need this lesson.

93

What types of Bend modifications can we do ?

When we speak of Bend Modification we are talking of both the Radius value itself as well as the angle of the wall. They are however done using different windows.

Once a Bend Radius has been unlocked from the formula that drives it, it always remains unlocked and thus will not change even if you change it back. The link must be restored using the Wizard before it will again be driven by the standard radius.

94

Modifying a Bend
2 1
Select the Bend indicated Select the formula symbol

4
The radius field is now active and you can key in the new value of 5 mm

If you wish during the modification the direction arrows are again shown and you can reverse them if you wish

Select the erase icon to clear the formula and key in a new value : 5mm

Only the bend is modifiable in the operation and as stated before angles must be managed from the wall creation window.

95

Modifying the Angle of a Bend

Select the Wall or the Plane located under the wall in the tree

Key in the new angle of 45 degrees

This currently is a limited functionality. Some walls are not yet able to have the angle modified, For Example walls created from and extrusion.
