Preface
This report is a part of CVE 236 Civil Engineering Materials for civil engineering second year students. This project is about the calibration test of the testing machine. The data on this individual report is based on our experiment which me and my group have done last week. On this project, our group had to find the error of load from the universal testing machine by divide into 3 subgroups. Each subgroup had to record the values from a dial gauge after that we combined all the result together and find the average values and need to hand in an individual report. I also have to thanks Dr. Weerachart for advice and assistance to finish the experiment and report. I hope that this report will be useful to anyone who is interested. If there is any mistake in this report, I would like to apologize and accept all the wrongness and I will do my best on the further project.

Introduction

Calibration Test of Testing Machine

This experiment aimed to determine the calibration of the testing machine. Calibration is the comparison of an instrument against a known with standard. So, why do we need to calibrate? The answer is so simple, it is because all instruments have tendency to drift so having instruments calibrated insures quality output products. Out of tolerance instruments tend to give wrong readings resulting in unnecessary back jobs and process failures. Bad or low quality products would pass as good ones resulting in warranty cost, and good products as non-conformance to quality ones, resulting to unnecessary reworks. So basically, calibration is all about producing high quality which is equal to money.

Objective
- To obtain calibration factor of a universal testing machine.

Experiment
- Equipment

1. Universal testing machine <CL-01>

In this figure is not the CL-01

2. Proving Ring <Serial: 4914>

Procedure
1. Select the right proving ring by choosing its capacity greater than the testing machine which will be calibrated; otherwise the proving ring may be damaged. 2. Place the proving ring right in the middle of the testing bed. 3. Set zero at the dial gauge as well as the test machine. 4. Select reading points typical between 10 to 20 points. In this experiment, we recorded every 500 kg reading from the universal testing machine until it reached 8,000 kg which. 5. Slowly apply the load and record the data from both proving ring and universal testing machine. Apply the load until the maximum is reached, then release the load. 6. Determine the average proving ring reading, which collected by 3 subgroups, and apply the calibration factor of the proving ring to get the Actual Load. 7. Plot the reading load versus the actual load with the x-axis being the machine reading load and the y-axis being the actual load. 8. Determine the machine calibration factor between the actual load and the reading load.

Conclusion and Discussion As you can see on the Result section, our group obtained the calibration factor as 1.04 which means the Universal Testing Machine display the load less than where it should be. According to the Universal Testing Machine calibration factor which is 1.03 compare to our result which is 1.04, it indicates that there is a small error on our experiment which can occurred by inaccurate reading on dial gauge or on the Universal Testing Machine scale.
