APPLICATION OF WSN IN PRECISION FARMING In the Precision Agriculture various techniques are available to monitor and control the

required environmental parameters for the particular crop. It is particularly crucial to analyse the methods which can effectively manage the proper environment. The most important factors for the quality and productivity of plant growth are temperature, humidity, light, level of the carbon dioxide , soil moisture (Soil water potential).Continuous monitoring of these environmental variables gives information to the grower to better understand, how each factor affects growth and how to manage maximal crop productiveness. The optimal greenhouse climate adjustment can enable us to improve productivity and to achieve remarkable energy savings. Wireless communication can be used to collect the measurements and to communicate between the centralized control and the actuators located to the different parts of the greenhouse. In advanced WSN solutions, some parts of the control system itself can also be implemented in a distributed manner to the network such that local control loops can be formed. Compared to the cabled systems, the installation of WSN is fast, cheap and easy. Moreover, it is easy to relocate the measurement points when needed by just moving sensor nodes from one location to another within a communication range of the coordinator device. To acquire the data, WSN is the best since the climatic conditions inside the polyhouse has to analyzed for months, continuously for 24hrs.Therefore a compact data acquisition system should be employed.the hot and humid condition inside the polyhouse is not suitable for human health. After going through the many papers, we could find that Prof T V Prabhakar, CEDT, IISc Banglore, did same kind of work. He suggested us to go for TelosB motes. Ref: wireless sensor networks for marginal farming in india - COMMON ... commonsense.epfl.ch/Resources/thesis.pdf Telos B: Product Description Crossbows TelosB mote (TPR2400) is an open source platform designed to enable cuttingedge experimentation for the research community. The TPR2400 bundles all the essentials for lab studies into a single platform including: USB programming capability, an IEEE 802.15.4 radio with integrated antenna, a low-power MCU with extended memory and an optional sensor suite (TPR2420). TPR2400 is powered by two AA batteries. If the TPR2400 is plugged into the USB port for programming or communication, power is provided from the host computer. If the TPR2400 is always attached to the USB port no battery pack is needed. TPR2400 provides users with the capability to interface with additional devices. The two expansion connectors and onboard jumpers may be configured to control analog sensors, digital peripherals and LCD displays. Telos B mote can be used as a USB device and programme it.

Telos B mote 2420CA : With sensor Suite, has port for 8 analog and 1 digital sensor Cost: Rs. 16,840/Sensors included in the sensor suite are Humidity sensor (SHT11), Visible light sensor (Hamamatsu S1087), Temperature sensor (SHT11)

Waspmote Agriculturall Board Waspmote is a sensor device specially oriented to developers. It works with different protocols (ZigBee, Bluetooth, GPRS) and frequencies (2.4GHz, 868MHz, 900MHz) being capable of getting links up to 12km. It counts with an hibernate mode of 0.7uA which allows to save battery when it is not transmitting. More than 50 sensors already available and a complete open source IDE (API libraries + compiler) made really easy to start working with the platform. The new Waspmote Plug & Sense! line allows developers to forget about electronics and focus on services and applications. Now you can deploy wireless sensor networks in a easy and scalable way ensuring minimum maintenance costs. The new platform consists of a robust waterproof enclosure with specific external sockets to connect the sensors, the solar panel, the antenna and even the USB cable in order to reprogram the node. It has been specially designed to be scalable, easy to deploy and maintain.

Conclusion: We have chosen Telos B mote 2400CA (4 no) and programming it using CONTIKI OS, though Tiny OS is preferable, it is bit complicated to use at this stage. The number of Telos B motes required will depend on the size of green house and the node topology we chose. We have enlisted the sensors and got quotation from different dealers, later we will going to integrate the sensors on the telosB mote.
