Learning Outcomes: At the end of the class, students should be able to: 6.1 Understanding properties of electrolytes and non-electrolytes

1. state the meaning of electrolyte 2. classify substances into electrolytes and non-electrolytes 3. relate the presence of freely moving ions to electrical conductivity

6.2 Analysing electrolysis of molten compound

1. Describe electrolysis 2. Describe electrolytic cell 3. Identify cations and anions in a molten compound 4. Describe electrolysis of a molten compound 5. Write half-equations for the discharge of ions at anode and cathode 6. Predict products of the electrolysis of molten compounds

Content: 1. Electrolyte and non-electrolyte 2. Electrolysis 3. Electrolytic cell Students Prior Knowledge: 1 2 3 Students have learnt about the formation of ionic compound Students have learnt about the movement of current Students have done the experiment on properties of ionic and covalent compound [electrical conductivity of Lead (II) Bromide]

Noble Values: Responsibility

Materials: Microsoft power point, mahjung paper, colourful papers and whiteboard

Set Induction (5 minutes) : Teacher shows a video about how molten and solid Lead (II) Bromide cause the bulb lighted or not. Then, teacher asks students what they observed from the video. Teacher guide students on what they need to observe and explain why the bulb lighted in the molten state but not lighted in the solid state.

Method/Activities

Teaching Materials

Step 1 ( 20 minutes)

Electrolyte and non-electrolyte

Teacher shows the definition of electrolyte, the particles contain in the electrolytes and some example.

Microsoft power point

Teacher asks students what is non-electrolyte. Teacher stress that the definition of non-electrolyte is inverse to the electrolyte.

Formative evaluation Teacher gives a quiz to make sure students understand what is electrolyte and non-electrolyte

Step 2 (10 minutes)

Electrolysis

Teacher asks students what they understand about the word electrolysis. Teacher write the word electro and lysis separately and explain what are the meaning of the two words.

Whiteboard

Step 3 (40 minutes)

Electrolytic cell

Teacher tells to students the component in the electrolytic cell which contain battery, bulb, electrolyte, positive and negative electrode. Teacher asks students to label the component in electrolytic cell by using the paper that is given.

Mahjung paper Colourful paper Worksheet

Teacher explain to students the electrode that connected to positive terminal is anode while the electrode that connected to negative terminal is cathode. Then, teacher explains about the movement of ions during electrolysis. Anions will move to anode while cation will move to cathode.

Formative evaluation Teacher asks students to label the electrode (anode and cathode) and stick the ions that will be attracted to both electrode.

Teacher shows the equation for discharge of ion at anode and cathode and the overall equation.

Teacher asks students to recall back what are the observation that can be observed at both electrode based on experiment on properties of ionic and covalent compound (electrical conductivity).

Conclusion (5 minutes): Teacher asks students what they have learnt and write on the whiteboard.

Assignments: Teacher gives worksheet for students to complete.
